One of my backyard friends, Scrawny Guy, was missing for a couple weeks, and when I briefly saw him just now, I could see one of his eyes was whited out. At first I thought the eye might be missing, but I think it's just whited out. He left before I could get a pic, but if he comes back, I'm going to try & get a quick video to post. It looked like there could have possibly been either an infection or injury, but I'm not sure. Just wondering of some possible reasons?

it could be caused by an infection (there's been a couple of cases in this forum the last couple of weeks) or bad nutrition.
I would say likely infection (but that's my unprofessional opinion) but pictures are useful. Better opinions should be by soon.

of course with a name like Scrawny Guy, may it is bad nutrition...

Do you think you could feed him antibiotics if we told you how?

He was originally so small when we first met, and had the scrawniest tail I ever saw, but he's not scrawny now, he and his tail suddenly started growing one day, lol, but that'll always be his name. I have some antibiotics in my special emergency kit stash (thank you again Jackie!), so I could always pull out my kit and get a re-reminder from you guys on what to do, and try dosing him. I just came back from a dr appt, and of course he came back while I was gone, my mom was working in the garage with the door open, and she said he came in to see her 3 times, and she gave him a walnut, so it's at least a good thing that whatever happened to him, and wherever he's been the last couple weeks, he seems to be back, so I can try dosing him. I'm going to sit in garage right now with my camera to see if he comes again so I can post pic also, but I will surely need an antibiotic dosing update, and I've gotta open my emergency kit up and find meds.
Thank you all for your help, I haven't been on here in quite a while. I went into a deep funk when one of my dearest and sweetest regulars went missing, and I think maybe killed, and it's just been so hard to come on here and to read forums and talk and share with you all, but here I am, and I'm trying, and I thank you all. :grouphug
p.s. opened my emergency kit, I've got 4 bottles of stuff. Cipro 500 mg, Pred 5 mg, looks like maybe Metacam 7.5 mg, and a liquid SMZ TMP 200/40/5?

The Cipro is probably perfect. Not expired? If you know his weight or can get a pic so that we can guestimate, we can tell you how much to give.

No, fortunately the cipro is not expired. I've been outside already, and will be watching for him today. I'll keep you posted, hopefully with a video!

HEY CALI...GLAD YOU'RE BACK!!! GOOD LUCK WITH THIS ONE. CHECK OUT SASSYSQUIRREL'S THREAD ABOUT MAGGIE http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?41784-Maggie-has-hurt-her-eye-Help
REGARDING YOUR LOST ONE...UNFORTUNATELY, IN MANY, IF NOT MOST CASES WITH WILD SQUIRRELS, IT'S THE PRICE WE PAY FOR DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEM. THEY LIVE IN THE MOMENT AND HAVE OTHER AGENDAS...AS MUCH AS WE LIKE TO BELIEVE THAT WE HAVE FORMED A BOND WITH THEM, IF SOMETHING IN THEIR LITTLE HEAD TELLS THEM TO GO, THEY ARE GONE...AND WE ARE LEFT TO WONDER...

If it is an infection, you should start the Cipro ASAP to minimize any additional damage to the eye! Good luck, I hope you can help him.

Thanks you guys :grin3
I've only tried to give antibiotics once before to a wild, and it wasn't easy, cause he did not want to take it :eek
If I remember right, I believe I ground up a pill (or part of a pill?), put it in a tiny container, and added a little water to it, and kept it in the refrigerator. I don't remember if I'm supposed to ground up a whole cipro pill or part of one, and how much water to add, and how much I'm supposed to dose? Maybe someone can remind me about dosing antibiotics, since it's been so long since I last tried? Or maybe I can find my old messages on here, and see if I kept the info. Any help is appreciated! (I have not seen him yet today)

I'll PM you the instructions for the pill, but you will need to know or guess the weight for the squirrel to properly dose. That's why I suggested a pic so that we all can guess. Also, I'm trying to remember the best ways that some people have found for dosing a wild. Perhaps not adding the water, doing the math on how much dry to give, and adding it to some peanut butter or something? I know there are threads out there, some relatively recent, but I can't remember where.

Once you have the mixed Ab solution made up (based on size of pill and weight of squirrel), you can add the correct amount of the AB solution to some peanut butter and then smear the AB/peanut butter mix onto a walnut. Toss the nut and make sure he eats it all. Sometime they will flick off some of the peanut butter so I tend to make to err on dosing a little bit too much rather than too little or exactly the right amount. Good luck.

Thanks guys! I have the antibiotic mixture all made up, just been waiting for him to come back. I don't like the waiting, makes me nervous! I've got everything ready, though, plus have video camera ready. He knows us well, so at least it's not like he'll run from me. On the contrary, he comes racing over when he sees me. He has a wonderful personality, and I'll do my best to help him. :tilt

Yes, thank you for your PM (sorry if I forgot to PM you back). I got your info, and also saw my old message from Jackie when I tried dosing a long time ago. I read it all, and believe I figured it out, being careful not to overdose. I'm still waiting around for him. I just dosed two different things, hoping if he does not take one thing, he'll eat the other. I'll post again later, going back to keep an eye on the yard. Thank you again!

He was here! I got some video, I will need my husband's help uploading it, I've totally forgotten how, so I'll do my best to get video up tonight. His eye did, in fact, look really icky and infected. Maybe all the white could actually be pus? And the inner corner looked kinda bloody. It did not look good, BUT, he's still super full of energy, so I took that as a very good sign at least, AND, he took the medicine! I think that may have been my first successful dosing of antibiotics! :bounce2 I'm so glad he came back and stayed a while, so I got a much better look, and YES, he ate the walnut laced with cipro!! :thumbsup

There's some good close ups, where you can see what looks like pus, both at the beginning and again at end of video. (I think you can really see some goop in the eye at the end of the video)
Thanks for watching.

The squirrels I have had that had that type of eye injury either lost the eye all together or just lost their eye sight in that eye. Mine all adjusted well to their disablilty and did fine for many years even with the abundance of predators I have here. You know all about my Big Boy...he is a perfect example of surviving in the wild with an eye disability...being that he was blind in his one eye for over 6 years and then losing that eye all together earlier this year...he still survived to be almost 8 years old. Severe illness which led to predator getting him is what ended his long life. The experiences here that I have had with the many who had these types of eye injuries...I really do think your Scrawny Guy will be just fine and I know you will be there everyday keeping an eye on him and making sure he is doing well. :grouphug

Hi there Cali Squirrel lover,
I am so glad you are getting some AB's in.
I had to tell you about my Lucy.
She is a wild squirrel that we noticed as a juvi that had lost her eye. Looked like injury to us.
We also dosed AB's in pecans daily. She lost the left eye totally. It remains closed.
That was in 2008. She has had countless pregnancies and is a tough ole gal.
She visits everyday and looks like a million bucks.
She is our "one eye'd Lucy" and we love her.
Thought it would help along with the other stories to hear that it doesn't mean they cannot survive with one eye. We have watched Lucy learn to do everything just as the others do, sometimes even better. NO ONE messes with Lucy:grin3
P.S. Eye looks bad, Lucy's did too at first but after days it just closed up for good. Be prepared.

Question, though, What do you do if they run off with the medicine dosed nut?? My boy was just here and took off with the walnut piece with the cipro!! Yesterday he sat right with me and ate it. Now I don't know if he ate it or hid it, but my bet is that he hid it, because he came back again. Now what?! Now do I have to worry about another squirrel finding it and eating it? And what about him, I don't know if he got his meds for today. What do you do in these situations?

When he came back, I had no idea if he'd eaten his meds or not, so I did not try giving him more. He ran into the house onto the back porch anyway, begging me for a whole in shell walnut, and was so excited and wouldn't leave without it, so I caved & gave him one, and he ran off with it, I think to hide it. If he were to come back this evening, is it ok to give a second dose of meds, not knowing if he ate the first dose or not? I don't want to do anything to hurt him in any way. He's so hyper, but from what I saw, the eye looked less white, and more red today.

actually in this case... I would drizzle 0.4 ml SMZ-TMP into a semi cracked pecan.... it's sweet and sticky and broad spectrum...
the sqs hands will get all gooey and he'll groom:grin2... it's one of my sweet sq secrets...
it tastes good and sqs actually like it....cipro is good too, but it tastes like crude and sqs know it, throw it down usually.
just what I would do...
twice a day is ideal but once will work... continue for two weeks if possible, but even a few days will allow the sqs immune system to bulk up and allow healing.
I do know of resistance issues, this is a wild sq and not to be concerned with all that mumbo jumbo... getting him treatment is what matters....
good to see you back, and as MJS shared...it is a very tough relationship being friends with sqs... heart breaking at times.... but they can be so entertaining too...
I still recall the way Lisa's feet sounded on my deck as she ran for her treats and she has been gone for 6 years...
she will always be with me....that's strong character... they are powerful little fluffy butts.
Thank goodness for sqs:Love_Icon

As Jackie said the SMZ is really tasty and they NEVER mind a nut with that in it but that my be hard for you to get. I think you said all you had was the cipro.
My Lucy had days like yours as well. Hit or miss on the AB.
First off my wilds only get pecans as treats. I call it Pecan Sunday. Usually only on Sundays. So when they get those? They don't hide it:grin3 but I had days that Lucy only got one dose a day and days when Lucy didn't show. I remember because I was so worried about her. She is wild so what you can get in, gets in. It is bound to help. Nothing like standing vigil with a loaded nut and they are a no show or you can't watch them eat it. It is hard I know. Hang in there.
If he is scrawny will he eat other goodies? Like Henrys wild bites? Veggies, Avacado?
Please keep us posted and bless you for working so hard to help him.:grouphug

Double dose will not hurt him. The lethal dose is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH higher than the therapeutic dose you are giving. And a single dose if another squirrel finds the AB laced nut will not hurt it either.

Thanks you guys, now I feel a lot better!! I think I actually do have SMZ-TMP in my emergency kit, but I had no idea what it was!! A certain someone on here sent me an extremely handy emergency kit of important stuff some time ago, and dates are all still good, I will double check though. (THANK YOU JACKIE!! :Love_Icon)
He's actually not scrawny anymore, but that'll always be his name, I've called him that for so long now! He ate the cipro nut day before yesterday with no problem, I think he was just not hungry when I saw him yesterday, and was in the mood for his little hiding nut game with me.
My mom has been asking me if we should try to catch him with the havahart cage we have, but I told her I don't know, I didn't think it was necessary if he's still running around full of energy and we keep giving him antibiotics. I know if it's not absolutely necessary, it's not a good idea, because it scares them and stresses them so badly.
So far, I have just the one video of his eye posted on this thread, if any of you want to see it. I'd like to get new pics today, if I can. I thought the eye looked less white and more red yesterday.

Of course not, that would be to easy!! I swore I would not leave the house until he came back, but I needed a handful of groceries, so I briefly went out. He does love avacado though, so it could have been him. Now we're doing things outside, and leaving the back door open, so if he comes along the fence, he'll either hear us or see the open door. OH, also, as soon as we got back, the guy next door fired up his power tools again!! :soapbox No power tools at the moment, though, so I'm praying this won't be one of his marathon power saw projects. LOL, I spoke too soon, there's the power saw again!!
Please send prayers and positive thoughts that my boy comes back and takes his meds. His energy was great the day before yesterday, so I'm staying positive and certainly not giving up on him. :grouphug:grouphug:grouphug :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Oh Sweeps, this is RIDICULOUS, the guy next door is already in his yard making so much noise, slamming the back door, SLAMMING piles of wood, and using different loud power tools :shakehead I told you before how bad they fight next door, I'm talking, I can hear IT ALL, and I don't want to hear it all!! I've never heard people fight this loud, and it's been in a bad cycle again lately, and these noisy backyard projects ALWAYS increase when the fighting is bad. I'm praying it doesn't interfere with my Scrawny Guy coming today. Please, please, please Lord, help him get here today and take his medicine. OH, but I did see another of my regulars, who got a nasty scratch by the back corner of one of his eyes, but it's looking better today, AND, one of my little ones came limping to see me today, with a hurt front paw! He was able to hold his food, though, so I'm hoping his paw will soon heal. He did eat a couple of nuts laced with echinacea :thumbsup That's it, please no more injuries!!
Going back to look for Scrawny. I left the back door open while I type this real quick, he'll come right in if it's open! Love ya too Sweeps!! :grouphug

I did not see my boy today, or yesterday, or the day before? I'm losing count of the days, help, LOL! I felt down this morning, had my cry, then turned around, and I'm back to not giving up on him. It's that waiting and wondering that drives you nuts, so I got started on my many outdoor garden projects I need to get done. I saw some of my other regulars, but none of them would tell me if they'd seen Scrawny Guy, OR give me his cell phone #!! :soapbox I saw my little one who has a hurt front paw, poor sweetie. He holds up one of his front paws when he walks, I don't know what he did, but he took some more echinacea today on his walnut half. I got a short video of him limping, I think the paw looks a little swollen. This limping one is NOT Scrawny Guy, he's one of my younger ones. I get so tired when any of these guys is injured, I don't sleep well, I'm such a worrier.
Please send prayers for Scrawny Guy, and I'll check in tomorrow. Thanks guys. :Love_Icon:grouphug:Love_Icon

Oh my gosh, Scrawny Guy was JUST here!! :crazy:grouphug:crazy
I was in back, knee deep in a gardening project, and was paying attention to all squirrels going in and out of the yard, when my mom walked across the yard to get something & saw a very hungry squirrel eating the couple nuts and some avacado I had out, she walked around to see the other side of his face, and called out "I think this is the hurt one!" Sure enough, it was him. Unfortunately, he would not eat his medicine dosed nut, though. It was chaos, because he's the most hyper squirrel I've ever known, with the most energy, and when I tried to dose a new nut, plus grab my video camera, I didn't realize he ran in the house after me, and jumped on my leg and proceded to climb up me til I tossed him a whole, in shell walnut! The eye looked closed at first, and like I said, it's so hard to get a good look because he's so hyper and fast, but I think the eye is still there, but does look blind. I'll check video and see if I captured anything I can post. I'm just glad he's still alive. I really thought he must be, because he's just so quick and so smart. Stand by, I'll post sometime later with an update. Thank you for your prayers for this funny boy!! (Now would you please pray he takes his medicine??) :grouphug

Good luck to Scrawny Guy! I just realized last week one of my regulars is blind in one eye, probably from fighting, and he is skinny and hungry so I have been giving him extra food. He came at least twice today and he is REALLY demanding and kinda scary when he grabs food :eek :tilt. His eye looks kinda cloudy but not infected, and he can't seem to see anything on that side. Scrawny was a daily visitor for so long, a lot of them were. Now I seem to have a few regulars, but the rest are here and there. Scrawny Guy finally just came back for a quick visit. I had a dosed nut in the frig, but he would not take it, in too much of a hurry, AND, there were like four other squirrels all here at the same time, all excited and wanted a nut, so it wasn't great timing. I wish he had stopped by when no one else was here, but I'm still glad I got to see him. Eye not so good, not totally sure if it was still in there, but I THINK it was, just kinda closed. His energy was no different than ever before, he's got crazy good energy, very quick, great at jumping and keeping away from the others, so at least that part seems good. I don't know what else to do, just keep a watch out for him and offer him good stuff to eat and water to drink. I sure do miss him stopping by on a daily basis. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

OK, Scrawny Guy update :grin3 He's come by to see us the last three days in a row! :thumbsup I was in the car just around the corner two days ago, on my way back home, when I saw him! So, I saw him around the corner and across that street, coming from another yard and getting ready to cross a busy street, on his way to our house. Oh, how it made me nervous. I zipped back home, and by the time I ran in the house and opened the back door, he came running along the fence and jumped down to come over to me! As usual, if he sees me, he won't eat, and will go crazy until I give him a whole nut to hide. He took his nut and ran off, but I had a hunch he'd be back, so my husband went out and walked around the corner to see where exactly he goes. Sure enough, Scrawny came back for a second nut, and when he ran back to the street behind us, my husband saw him come out and make his way back across the street and off into another backyard. My husband told me he couldn't believe Scrawny didn't get hit by a car, the way he did not cross when it was all clear, but waiting until cars started coming his way! He said cars were braking as he ran out and then got scared and ran back. I don't know how he does it, poor sweet little guy. By the way, I don't know if it's too late to help him or not, but we discovered if I just put the freakin' antibiotic right on the outer shell of a whole walnut, he still takes it, and licks it all clean before running off to hide it!! All that time I kept trying to hide the scent and taste of it and kept putting it on a piece of nut, hoping he'd eat it, and all I had to do was put some on a whole nut!! :soapbox I'm so mad I didn't try it that way sooner, I can't believe that. Anyway, the last three days he's taken a whole nut dosed with some antibiotics and licked it off, and licked it off his paws. The eye looked pretty closed, but not all the way. He's still such a beautiful boy. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:grouphug:grouphug:Love_Icon:L ove_Icon

Just got caught up on your thread. Wanted to ask if Scrawny Guy's eye was ever visible to you? In some cases, and I think squirrels are included, what is called "the third eyelid" or "inner lid" can cover the eye. Can happen for different reasons, but we had a pet born with eyes too little, and the inner lid covered the eye. While technically blind, he got around just fine, and Im still not certain could not see at least a bit. This condition can cause repeated infections in the eye sometimes, so antibiotics, or cleaning the eye area (not an option in case of the squirrel of course) help keep it in check. Didn't see anyone mention it, so I thought I would add that possibility.

Thank you, that's interesting, and I never heard of that! Yes, before this injury, or whatever happened to him, his eyes always looked normal, looked fine. Then he suddenly disappeared for 2 weeks, and the next time I saw him after that, the one eye looked white, which I first thought was just blind looking, but on a closer look, seemed also like it could have been covered with pus. He wouldn't come here daily for a while after that, so I was having a hard time getting any antibiotics in him, but did initially get him to take 2 doses. Over these last couple or few weeks, the eye looks like it's still in there, but more closed up than before. I really don't want to jinx anything, but he's been here every day the last few days, and if I put some Cipro on a whole, in shell walnut, which is his favorite thing in the world to have, he licks it all around before he hides it, so I think he's taking in some meds :Love_Icon:thumbsup:Love_Icon

Are you positive he didn't have this before? The reason I ask is because I had a wild trio who were raised on my porch, and the male was born with a cataract on one of his eyes. It didn't slow himdown a bit. He became the dominate male in the neighborhood, lived for 11 years, and even survived for a year after being severely injured in a hawk/owl attack, in which he was blinded for at least a month in his good eye by a large abcess. Evidentally he could see shadows with the eye with a catarat, because I was able to walk up from the bad side and put apples in the feeder for him, but couldn't get as close on the cataract side. The young wannabee's tried challenging him, and discovered he cold spin around like a ninja and scare the pee out of them. He was known as Blind Bob on SB

Hi, thanks for checking in! :grin3 No, he didn't have any signs of an eye issue before this. I think this is from an injury, there was initially some redness and possible bloodiness along with the whiteness, like maybe an infected injury?? It was a shock to see it, after not seeing him for the two weeks he disappeared, so I definitely think something happened to him in that time. I need to try and get an updated pic of him to post. I do think the eye is still in there, but it seems to have gotten more closed up.

Saw Scrawny Guy today, so he is still around. Didn't see him for a couple of days, either I just missed him, or he stayed away because of some road work around the corner where he crosses the street. I found him eating outside the back door, I think he had some avacado and not sure if he had any nuts or not. Then he saw me and came RUNNING. He's in such a hurry, it's always hard to get a good look at him, but from what I saw, I still don't like the look of that poor eye. He took a medicated dosed in shell nut and licked it before running off with it. He's quite a character, and definitely has a piece of my heart. I believe this little guy got injured and I'm afraid this means permanent blindness. From the look of his lower lid I suspect some claw that tore the eyelid and possibly injured the eyeball.
This sort of injury would need AB treatment and possibly even the care of a vet IMO. I don't know how easily you can address that. You could always try teating with ABs in the wild... but there is no certainty as to the outcome.
As for living outside this way, of course it does reduce his chances... :( but if you do support him for food and shelter he could make it. I have one here in the same state - blind in one eye - and he comes over for food every day and has a nest nearby. He seems to be doing well.

:thankyou Yes, it is difficult treating with meds in the wild! I have been trying, but he doesn't always eat it all, etc.

Yep, I am so happy to see him in this pic. His eye looks just exactly like my Lucy's eye. The eye is still behind there it is just not a functional eye. Lid will no doubt close up for good soon.
I think it looks fabulous.
He is going to be great. Since he was wild before he will do fine. As I said, my wild Lucy has spent 4 or 5 years out there with only one eye.

Scrawny Guy update! :thumbsup
I was away for four days and left my mom in charge of the furry crew. Scrawny would find her when she worked out in the yard, smart boy :Love_Icon. Then she didn't see him for a day, then he found ME the day I came home. :grin3 Didn't see him again for the last few days (3 or 4?), and went on a walk with my husband yesterday in search of him. I brought along a bag of nuts, and a couple walnuts in the shell, so I could "clack" them together as we walked around the neighborhood, LOL! The squirrels who know me know that clacking sound, and he'd come running if he heard me. Never saw a single squirrel on our walk yesterday! Scrawny came back today, though, has been back and forth a lot today, would not tell me where he's been!
One added note, one of my other regulars, a male, though I'm not absolutely sure which one, looked like he might have the exact same eye injury as Scrawny!! :shakehead I saw him resting way up the monterey cypress in back this morning, and he looked down at me and came right down to get a nut, and when I briefly saw the one side of him, it looked like Scrawny's eye. I could not believe it. I knew something looked funny, even from the long distance when he was way up the tree, when he turned to climb down, I saw a flash of that one side, and thought, "uh oh, something looks wierd". IF it's the one I think it is, then it's a brand new injury, and could explain why I hardly saw any of them yesterday, maybe there were territory fights going on?? I feel so bad, I just hate seeing all these injuries, I have such love for them. When I was away for those four days, it was for our anniversary, and my husband had to talk me into it, because I didn't want to leave Scrawny and all of them!! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon
I'll try to post today's pics soon, I need a certain husband to give me another lesson on how to post them...

#4, Scrawny Guy this morning, 9/27/13. He was in such a lovely calm mood this morning. He's almost always in such a hurry, wants something for the road, but this morning, he sat very close to me and just kinda relaxed and ate...and ate...and ate! Even when two others came into the yard, no one bothered anyone else, and Scrawny did not run off, but stayed calm right next to me and ate until he was ready to go, then let me know he wanted a whole nut for the road. I was late meeting some friends, but they understood when I explained Scrawny showed up and I had to stay and feed him! It was such a lovely treat to have him sit with me and not be in such a rush, I LOVED IT!! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon He sat with his non boo boo eye facing me. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I hope no one minds, but I'd like to post some pics of the latest one with an eye injury :shakehead
This is one of my bigger boys, I've been mixed up for a while now between White Tufts and Butch, but I think this is my Butch, my sweetheart. They're all my sweethearts, though. Can anyone tell me what you think of Butch's eye? I think this injury happened around last weekend? Maybe last Sunday, Sept 22. I did not see him that day, then saw him Mon up the tree, with the eye injury. It looks so closed. Will it just heal and then he'll be able to open it again? Does anyone have any ideas of what happened, and what's going on with it? Thank you for any input. :grouphug:grouphug:grouphug

Awe, poor baby. I am thinking he probably has lost sight in that eye. His eye appears to be cloudy and white, but am also wondering if that white could possibly be scar tissue? I have had many that their eye injuries started out the way yours appear and mine did lose their eye sight in the injured eye. My momma now with the cheek abscess, that is soooooo close to her eye, I fear she too may lose her eye sight in that eye or possibly even lose her entire eye. Her abscess is getting worse and again from past experience in situations like that, the few I had eventually lost their entire eye. All of mine with either one eye or just eye sight in only one eye adapted well and have lived just fine for many years with their disability, even with the abundance of predators I have here.

Scrawny Guy was just here!! :wott His latest schedule is that he stops by every 3 or 4 days or so. Don't know what he's been up to, and he would not tell me! I was so glad to see him. He ate a walnut, then came running inside the back porch and stood up to let me know he was ready for his whole nut for the road. I do love that boy.

I've been seeing Butch every day, poor guy. I feel so bad for him, as he adjusts to having one bad eye now. He's a bigger, older boy, and it's hard to see him scoot away when others come around, whereas before, he'd chase them all. He's so sweet. :Love_Icon:Love_IconButch:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Hi Kelly! Thanks for checking in. Yes, I do feel bad for Butch in particular, I can see him trying to be cautious and adapt to his bad eye. He seems to be doing pretty well, though. I do see him pretty much every day, unlike Scrawny, who is just nuts and all over the place! :grouphug:grouphug

I've seen Butch daily, and I can see him adjusting to life with one bad eye. I've seen him have a moment here and there of chasing someone (as in, another squirrel, LOL!), just out of his area where he's trying to eat, and I took that as a good sign, like he has some confidence back. Poor guy, he's my big boy, and a sweetie. When he first had his eye injury, you could tell he was a little freaked. He was so cautious, and if even a baby came around, he'd bolt and hide. I was happy to see him appear to be doing better. :thumbsup
Scrawny, on the other hand, I have not seen in a few days, but we've been super busy and it's possible he's been by when we've been gone. I've left out bowls with avacado, grapes, apple, and have returned to empty bowls, so he very well may have stopped by recently and I don't know it. I do know he likes avacado, so I'm really hoping he's been by.
I REALLY want to see him for myself, though, so if any of you Scrawny followers would send up a prayer for him to be safe and stop by to see me, I'd be most grateful. :grouphug:grouphug:grouphug:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Just catching up with this thread; I have a wild boy with a similar injury (named Alexander -- he is a scrapper!). He was missing a few days last week but I have seen him since. Like you, I asked where he was, and like your boy, he refused to answer :tilt.
You have a BUtch?!?! I have a Butchie :Love_Icon:Love_Icon He started it all; I used to joke he was sent by the others to infiltrate "the enemy" It worked :D. He is the little guy in my avatar; all grown up and has been released somewhere safer then where I live. Yes, it was a few weeks after Scrawny Guy's eye injury, Butch showed up with a similar injury! poor guy. :shakehead Big, tough boy, and now he's got a bad eye as well now. Anyhow I wanted to quikcly pop in and let you know that I have been thinking about you and your two eye injureds. How are they doing, how are they adapting to their eye issues? I quickly read a few posts but need to come back when I have alot of time to read more of what has happened since I last posted. Hope all is well with you and your buddies. P.S. I hope he's ok, I can't put my finger on it, but I thought he seemed a bit odd when I saw him yesterday and today. I'm not sure if it could have been because other squirrels were also here at the same time? It was like he wasn't noticing we were handing him a nut, he went around and around in circles, like chasing his tale. I don't know, it seemed strange. I know he has one bad eye, but for the past several weeks he had no trouble knowing we were giving him a nut. Yesterday and today, something was different. But then he took the nut and took off running fast back into the yard, so I don't know. You just know your squirrels, and you know when something seems off or different. I'll just keep watching him whenever I see him. I hope he's ok. He's already been through too much, I just want him to be ok. He's very special. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Hi Sweeper, Hi everyone!! :wave123
LOL, Sweeper, NONE of those pics above are of Tiny Baby, the ones you're talking about are of Scrawny Guy!! They DO look alike, don't they? Of course, I know it's been a long time since any of you saw Tiny Baby pics on his thread, so it's hard to remember. There's one or two pics of Scrawny Guy above that I really think he looks like Tiny Baby. I love the thought that they might be siblings. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon I didn't get any expert opinions on the thread I posted about my concern for Scrawny Guy's behavior lately, so I'm just going to keep a close watch for him, and I have a fresh batch of meds ready in the frig, if it looks like his bad eye is indeed infected again.

OK, I've been seeing Scrawny Guy a lot today, which I love! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon :thumbsup He ate a lot, which I also love! :thumbsup I dosed him on a whole walnut, which is the only way he's ever taken medicine. I put it on the outside shell of a whole walnut, and when he takes it, he rolls it around and around and around in his mouth, before running off to hide it. He came back several more times to get whole nuts to hide. The weather got really cold and windy, and we're supposed to get some rain, so they were all going crazy wanting nuts to hide. Based on their behavior, which literally changed on the very first day of autumn, they have all been crazy with hiding way more stuff than usual, which makes me think we're in for a long cold fall and winter. As usual, I saw Butch for breakfast. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon I love all my furry babies. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Thanks MBT! I saw him again yesterday, too, which was Mon 10/28, and I think he's doing better. He could have just been confused before, running around trying to avoid the others, or being distracted & confused, but his bad eye did also look a bit funny too last week. Hi sdreamcatcher! He was just here a couple min ago, and I was able to zoom in and get some close ups of his blind eye, and now that I can get a better look, I'm wondering if that bad eye IS having some problems again? I'm hoping some experts might see these new pics I'm about to post and tell me what they think.
The blind eye is the result of an injury, which looked clawed from a fight, back in August. Just last week, I thought it started to look funny, as if it could be infected again? This is what I'm hoping someone can tell me after looking at these close up pics from today. Thank you!!

Hi farrelli, and thank you for checking in. Yes, it was definitely dry and clean looking before, the way it looks in today's pics is new. When I saw it approx a week ago, I thought it looked a little red or irritated, and was concerned there might be a little infection, but the possible wet discharge look is new, today's the first time I've seen it.

Yes, that's where I thought it looked swollen too. Oh no, I don't want him to be in pain. I love all my squirrels, but he's extra special. He's been through a lot, and I hate the thought of ANY of them being in pain. I'm doing my best with meds, I have a little batch of cipro in a small container in the frig, and I think today was his third dose. The only way I can get any in him is to dose the outer shell of a whole walnut, and he licks it off when he rolls it around and around in his mouth, before he runs off to hide it. He only eats when he doesn't see me, once he sees me, it's all over and he won't settle for anything but that whole walnut. I'd certainly prefer to put the meds on something he'd actually eat, but he absolutely refuses. I'm going to try it this way for several days, dosing a whole nut, and keep a close eye on him. I appreciate you checking in on him, thank you for your input and support. :grouphug:grouphug

Yes, I've read about the nut rolling. I may not comment a lot on threads where someone doesn't need immediate help (I work 14 hours a day) but I do read just about every post anyone makes on TSB everyday to make sure people are getting help if needed. I have followed this thread from the start and it's great that you care so much. Unfortunately, I don't really know what else you could do but bring him in if this doesn't clear up. I think you may have considered this at some point? It's a hard call because it'd be super stressful for him, but sometimes it's the right answer. I hope that he gets better, but eye injuries are really hard for me to look at. I can watch just about any surgery without a problem, but I can barely watch someone put in a contact.

Oh no, here I've got an eye issue, and you're sensitive to anything with the eye! Then I truly give you an extra thank you for keeping up with Scrawny Guy. (Yes, I almost said thank you for keeping an eye on him!) I love him dearly, and would do anything I could for him. He's got so much spunk, and I love that about him. He's just in more of a hurry than any other squirrel I've ever known, so fast, I don't know if I'd ever be able to get him in a cage if it ever came to that (not to mention the stress on him). For now I'm not thinking in those terms, though, and I'll do my best to get some meds in him for now, and give him extra food, water, etc. The camera has been a good way for me to keep track of how the eye is doing, because he's so fast, it's hard for me to see it clearly. Thank you again, I do appreciate you keeping up with him. :grouphug:thankyou

Hi there,
Just saw these pics and the eye looks fine to me.
I have a neuro non release named Stelly who is blind in her left eye from a huge fall when she was a pinky. There may be pics of her eye on her thread here somewhere.
Stelly's eye does weep just like scrawny's and the vet has seen it. It is fine. I clean the eye sometimes but Stelly would prefer I leave it alone. They look identical to each other. I thought I would just let you know so you don't worry too much. I know we always worry but Stelly's eye has done that for a long time now. She is 8 months old. I told you about my wild Lucy as well and hers does that too. The white eye is also seen in both Stelly and Lucy.
I will try to post a pic of Stelly's eye for you soon.
I am too busy this time of year to do anything but pop in to TSB on and off for short periods of time but glad to see an update:grin3

Btw, has it been cold lately? I just thought of something, I had a minor eye injury when I was younger and now when it's cold and windy my eye waters like crazy. It can really burn too at times.

Thank You Kelly Brady!! You and farrelli came on here to help me out just in time, you know how I worry!! Thank you SO MUCH for telling me the story of your two with eye issues who also have the weeping, that helps so much. Thank you for checking in and looking at Scrawny Guy's latest eye pics, I do appreciate it. Sending you a hug! :grouphug:grouphug
I will continue to watch over him and take pics to get a closer look and monitor things. The camera really helps!

I think that the only way for you to know for sure if there is an ongoing problems with the eye is to keep watching it and see if it changes.
As long as it stays the same it is probably fine. If there is increased swelling, discharge etc then it might be an infection. As you said, taking pictures is REALLY helpful for judging if there are any changes. Visual memory is not very accurate.
I was able to add Cipro dose to small amounts of peanut butter and then insert into holes I drilled in almonds. I also added the peanut butter to walnuts (the ridges help to hold it in place). They sometimes will flick some of the peanut butter out so I would sometimes add a slightly larger dose factoring in that they would probably only get ~75% of the dosed peanut butter. Sometime I was able to retrieve the dosed peanut butter that they flicked off and add it back to another nut which they would then eat.

Hi Sweeper! Yes, I do feel bad, seeing the ones with the eye injuries, my poor babies. However, they are just amazing me with how they're adapting and surviving, bless their hearts. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon It's been SO helpful to post pics and have people with experience share their take on things. Without all of you, I'd just be going even more nuts with worry, not having a clue. Yes, it was helpful to hear of Kelly's similar experiences! Hi sdreamcatcher! Glad you checked in, thank you! I'm glad your Alexander is getting good and chunky, getting ready for winter. :thumbsup I see Butch every day, he seems to be doing well. I have no idea of his age, but he sure is the biggest of them all. I kinda think of Butch as my grumpy old man! He's super sweet with me, but is back to chasing the younger ones out of his way! When he first got hurt and lost sight in the one eye, he was so careful to keep out of everyone's way, just being extra cautious. Lately, though, he's doing some "snapping" at the younger ones, and to me, that's a good sign that he's more like himself again, maybe a little more self assured. Thanks for asking about him! :grouphug :Love_Icon:Love_Icon Butch :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I almost forgot to post, Scrawny Guy came today! :thumbsup Whenever I'm outta the house, first thing I do when I come home is open the back door, and within a minute of doing that today, he came running onto the back porch with me. Always in such a hurry. I noticed all food bowls outside the back door were empty, all the avacado, grapes, walnuts, and I'm pretty sure he had a hand in eating that! :thumbsup I put some nuts down for him to eat, but he'd have none of it, he wanted a whole one for the road! I adore him, he's my love, he can have whatever he wants. Ya, I know, they can ALL have whatever they want! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon Butch was here this morning, he's so sweet. He's not in nearly as much of a hurry as Scrawny. Butch comes walking up the back steps and will come inside for a nut. He's such a big boy. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Didn't get a chance to post yesterday, but Scrawny Guy came yesterday, too! (fri 11/1) :thumbsup After errands yesterday, I saw all the bowls were empty, a lot of avacado, grapes and nuts, everything gone. This always makes me think maybe he'd been here, and I think I was right. As soon as we walked out into the backyard, sat down to eat lunch, Scrawny came running from another yard and ran over to us! He's so darn cute. I tried to offer him pecan halves, but he jumped onto my mom's foot and waited for a whole walnut!:rotfl I'm pretty sure he'd been here for some time before we got home, and had been eating the food I had out. Oh, while he waited for his nut, he sat a moment and cleaned his bad eye! I'd never seen him do that before, but then again, he's usually lightening fast and doesn't sit still long! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I didn't capture it well enough in pics, but when he was very close to me, I noticed it looked like HIS bad eye was a little weepy or goopy, too. I'll always keep a close watch over both him and Scrawny, but I can see what you all have been talking about, there could always be this weepiness with the bad eyes.

Oh my gosh, I literally only know of one female for sure in our area! We had a second, but have not seen her in a few months, since she had babies. Every time babies are born, I notice they are usually males. I've been wondering where all the females are?! :eek

Thank you Sweeper! :grouphug I know, when I first saw Scrawny Guy, he really was scrawny! So was Tiny Baby. They both looked too little to be out on their own, I feel sure they were, which is why I always wondered if they were siblings. The only thing was, I never saw them "together", as in, hanging together, snuggling, playing, none of the things I had seen other young siblings do, but who knows. They really look alike, though, so I'm sticking with the story that they're related! As for Scrawny's name, I've never even called him by that name, it's just one of those names I gave him when I first saw him, in order to identify him. The ones who have those kinds of "identifying" names never get called by those names, they're always "pookie" "sweetie" "punkin" "baby" "my love", I've got a zillion names! The ones with names like Butch or Missy, get called by their proper names! Hey, there's a whole squirrel world system over here, and it all makes perfect sense in my head!! :rotfl:rotfl:rotfl
Thanks for checking in, and for commenting on sweet Butchie, he is such a big, beautiful boy! :thumbsup:Love_Icon

What part of Northern Cali are you in, if you don't mind me asking? We get Fox Squirrels here all the time, but they are not native to this area, so we have to release them down in Oregon. Maybe next spring, we might be able to release a few females down in you area, if you can soft release them for us. It's just an idea right now, but it would probably help with both the male fighting and get you all kinds of future little sqees bouncing around for you to see and love. :thumbsup:Love_Icon:thumbsup

Hi Duckman62! Thank you for checking in! :thumbsup You know, with the exception of our one female that we've known since BEFORE she was born, we have had regular females come visit, but they end up moving away or something? :dono Do females sometimes move to a different neighborhood after having babies? We do get babies, and I always wonder where they're coming from, our girl can't be having ALL of them, lol! We're down in the San Francisco bay area, busy area. Yep, must be a male squirrel thing - Lenny does that to me too! Nearly gave me a heart attack one time I was coming to give him treats and out of nowhere, he pounces on me! I had to stifle a scream. :rotfl Sounds like he knows what he wants and where to get it too. It's so nice of him to pay you a visit! :grin:Love_Icon

Oh, he's hilarious alright!! :eek He's the only one who does that, I've got lots and lots of males, but he's the only one who's THAT impatient!! He's always been that way, such a silly, silly boy, love him. Actually, I did have ONE other male, long ago, who jumped onto the bottom of my bathrobe a time or two, while waiting for his treat, but it was totally different from Scrawny Guy. The other one would jump on my robe, but then just stay put, just hang there looking up at me, not knowing what to do! I'd look down at him and say, "now what are you gonna do?", and he'd just quietly jump down, LOL!! Scrawny Guy, on the other hand, when HE jumped on my robe before, he just started climbing right up me!! :eek

Here's Scrawny Guy, and this was after he jumped on my pant leg and held on, before getting a whole nut! These pics were just a few min ago, when he came back again and again for things to hide, only those times I threw a nut fast, before he could jump on me and hang on!

I hope the little guy finds a warm safe nest for the night. Worried sick right now. IF these are orphans, they will be the third litter in three straight fall/winters :shakehead. I was never able to catch any of the previous ones (I am beginning to think the ones who run up to you are the exception rather then the rule). BUT they do have access to food and I do watch out for them as much as I can. Still hoping Mommy is shy with me and they only look like they are on their own. I will be out around daybreak feeding so for sure i will look to see where this one is. Another squirrel was settling down in a rather small drey last night, and either this baby red or the sibling was running along the wires just 15 minutes before I saw the other baby. Why so many were up so late I don't know. I think I messed up their feeding routine :(. I DO know the babies did get late morning food....

Yes, I hope either they're not as young as they look, OR, mommy is still around for them! I've had similar situations, where I've had little ones that I was sure were too little to be on their own. I did the very same thing, made sure to help out with food and water. I'll tell ya, it's not easy trying to take care of all the squirrels of the world, but boy, we sure try, don't we?! Ever since I got to know my first squirrel, it completely opened my eyes to all creatures, and I notice critters all over the place, that no one else I'm with even notices! I'm constantly saying things like, "hey, look, there's a squirrel!" and other people are like, "what? where? how'd you notice?" So for me, it was my first squirrel friend, Sarena, who opened my eyes to all creatures, great and small. She was one of the most fabulous squirrels of all time. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I went out and saw both little reds; one came from the direction I last saw him/her head last night on the wires; the other was on the wires next to the tree where I last saw him/her. Other then looking a bit cold/sleepy they seem ok. The neighbor dog was out already (they have a doggie door for him), but when he hears me he heads back toward the house. I came in so they can get food as they can be pretty shy at times. I do suspect they may be on their own, but not positive. There are so many little ones this year. I am still trying to figure out how many Star has; I know she has at least three but there were 4 or 5 in her tree the other day not counting the two tiny reds.
Editing to add: I just peeked out and at least one little red baby is on the shed eating, nice and active and looking good :D. I however may have more grey hairs soon, but all worth it if these guys thrive :thumbsup.

Hi Sweeper!! :wave123 It was interesting this year, it really got colder right from the first day of autumn. I know we don't get the level of cold as most everyone else on here, but it's been chilly most days. Our squirrels are definitely finishing up their day a lot earlier, as it gets chillier, and some days I don't see them until later in the morning, when it's really cold out. Hi Duckman62! :wave123 You got that right! :rotfl All of a sudden, there's boys everywhere!! It's so funny, I can't help myself, I DO act like their mama! I talk to all of them, tell them to be nice, etc, I really can't help myself. It's just in the last few days that I'm seeing either what are new ones, OR they're just all here at the same time, and with all the commotion, I can't keep straight who is who! :rotfl Doesn't matter though, I love them all. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Hi Sweeper! :wave123 Just in the last few days, they seem to traveling as a group or something, all showing up in the mornings. I opened the back door, and there was one by the door, one on the fence, one down by the squirrel cabana, another coming around the corner, and on and on! :eek At one point today, I didn't realize Scrawny had come back. I opened the back door, and he was RIGHT up against it, trying to get in! :rotfl So darn cute. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Foggy, damp cold today!! Fog is TRYING to burn off. Not as chaotic today, not everyone all at once. :thumbsup Butch is out there eating right now, and Scrawny has been back and forth, eating and taking nuts to hide. This morning Scrawny Guy jumped onto my fluffy long bathrobe, and proceeded to climb up me higher than he ever has! :eek I had the camera in my hands, so there was no nut in my hand to throw! :eek He was just kinda slowly making his way up, looking up at me, LOL, and I'm like :eek! I calmly scooted closer to the back doorway, and he jumped down onto the back steps, and THEN I was able to give him the nut he desired!! :grin3 It would have been either a great pic or great video, but someone else would have had to get it, there was no way I was going to try taking pics with him climbing up my robe!! That boy has got so much personality, he's so darn spunky!! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon
These 2 Scrawny Guy pics were taken later on, not during the visit where he climbed on me!! 11/14/13:

I can't set foot outside without Scrawny Guy finding me today!! Even if I think the coast is clear, he's really around somewhere, and comes running fast as could be, and startles the heck outta me!! :eek :rotfl He's eaten nuts, grapes and avocado, has hidden countless whole nuts, and right now as I type, is sitting right outside the back door, guarding and eating pecans!! At one point, my mom went out to the garage, where he promptly found her as well. Yes, she and I always have some whole nuts in our pockets, for these types of emergencies, LOL! :rotfl

Hi Sweeper, I wish you lived nearby, I'd come get a hug. :grouphug I just saw the new thread from AnnabellesMom, that Annabelle passed away, and I can't stop crying. Such a heartbreaking story, such a sweet, lovely little girl. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon
I did see both Scrawny Guy and Butch today. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon
Looking out the back door a little while ago, at the monterey cypress and the moon. Dedicated to the memory of sweet Annabelle :Love_Icon:Love_Icon
