Thankfully I've seen Peanut each day, usually twice a day, but today three times. I noticed this morning he was using his hurt paw to help hold his food!! This is good. He's still hobbling, but using the paw at all is a good sign. He's still getting a little echinacea, too. I've followed him around, and have seen him make his way up our big tree. For now I'm just keeping as close an eye on him as I can. Thank you for your Peanut prayers and well wishes. :grouphug:grouphug:grouphug:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Oh I'm so happy to read that little Peanut is doing better and starting to use his injured paw some now!:dance Sounds like he's also enjoying a little spoiling too!:grin2 But I'm sure you giving him some extra nutrion and the echinacea is helping too - I'm glad he has you watching out for him.:Love_Icon:hug

Thank you all for checking in on little Peanut, and all your kind words. :grouphug:grouphug

The biggest worry I have about him, is if his previous head injury left him with permanent brain damage. It certainly appeared in a video from weeks ago that he DID suffer a head injury, plus he just seems "special". For now I'm just focused on helping him the best I can, while allowing him his freedom. IT'S HARD. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!! I'm very grateful to all of you, for your help with my fuzzers, and for your kindness. If I'm being honest, I hate this time of year, hate the holidays. I can't stand to see my mom in so much pain, since my sister has nothing to do with us, which means my mom rarely sees any of her grandchildren (who are all adults). I can't wait to be over and done with the holidays!! My furry pookies help with the anxiety, sitting and watching them run around the yard always makes me smile. :grin3

Ya, I know you all thought you were going to find a warm and fuzzy thanksgiving message here!! :crazy1

It's OK, CSL....many of us struggle with the same lack of holiday spirit. I am ever thankful that, in the past, I enjoyed a big raucous loving family that celebrated every occasion with the type of Italian dinners you see on Olive Garden commercials....but everyone is gone from the Greatest generation now, and most of us Boomers didn't have children so..we're down to four 60-somethings..i know I had the best Holidays ever and I shouldn't feel sad, but I do. Especially since my mom, my best friend, sucumbed to c.diff on Christmas Eve and passed away on Jan 4 of 2007. Yeah that kind of shot it all to hell for me, so I hear ya. :grouphug

So I continue to watch out for Peanut each day. He's definitely walking better, as his injury heals. I think it was more than just a front paw, but all the way up his arm and sort of shoulder or side. Something is definitely off with him, including his mouth, and how he eats. Maybe it was also injured, or maybe something is just wrong, I don't know. I've often wondered if Peanut was born "special", meaning having issues, and being off caused a fall or something, resulting in what looked like a head gash when he was so young, OR did some sort of head injury THEN cause him to be "off"?? Either way I worry about him. He seems to do ok, but he's certainly not the same as the others. Sometimes after he eats, he will go to the back part of the yard and find a spot to just sit a while. Weird thing, though, is how he seems sort of in another world, and it looks like his breathing is fast, like I see the movement of his heart beating. Then after a while he trots off. I'll have to post more videos. He's just so sweet. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

OMG! I just saw one of those birds, maybe like the ones I saw here in our yard a long time ago. I heard squealing or screaming, freaked and came out to see this bird taking off in front me me with something in its claws (talons?) IT looked small and grey and I believe it was one of our rats! Crows were freaking out trying to shoo it out of here. If I see this bird again I'll try to get a pic.

Sorry rat :( BUT, rats have been finding ways to tunnel in to get under house and I think garage. I've been going all around with a can of that spray foam sealant. I've made a mess...:shakehead

Ok, let's see if I can list a few things, to keep track of what goes on around here:

Been seeing Peanut each day. I'm behind again on posting video, sorry. He still has a mouth issue and eats slower, with tiny nibbles. I bought some fox Valley ultra boost, to try soaking 1/2 block before giving it to him. Tried today but he ignored it and ate a plain piece of block. He's the sweetest.

One eyed Peepers seems to do well, thankfully.

Purple eyed boy or might be girl, has a new injury on the back leg and body, same side as blind eye. Poor love, don't know what happened. When I see him/her, they eat like 3 blocks and lots of nuts. I'm hoping this is helping lower stress and get more healing rest.

One of my big boys has a new, large lump sticking up around a shoulder. Maybe an abscess? :(

ButchKin continues to be boss, lol, and one of the biggest squirrels I've ever seen. She's the spitting image of her Papa Butch; both in looks and attitude, and it's hilarious. She's my alpha male, lol!

Little Man is my love. Such a sweet boy.

I've got to try getting a video when I have a big group of babies all running up for treats in the mornings, it's so funny, I love it :serene

Trying hard to seal holes around house...rats continue to be a problem :(

GIANT BLACK CAT been coming around. Two or three times now I went out when I heard alarm calls, to find this HUGE black cat sitting there looking up at them!! I chased him off then sprayed some stinky cat and dog repellent onto the house and surrounding fence around the property.

Power came back on after two hours last night :thumbsup

The rain was pretty much nonstop yesterday and into the night. Oh yes, then the WINDS picked up. You all know how the heavy winds just freak me out. It was the same time last year the heavy rain and winds combo broke a huge limb off our cypress tree, which we found on top of the garage roof. But at that time a year ago, we also had an arborist do a massive pruning and added more cables for the larger limbs. Plus the arborist just came back in Oct to check it . :thumbsup Yes, I'm paranoid about high winds, our big tree, and the safety of our squirrels. I did NOT sleep much at all last night, so I'm a zombie today. I kept hearing the wind knocking things around, and THE RATS ARE DEFINITELY UNDER THE HOUSE AGAIN!! Lord, please help me!! I need to show you where I've been plugging holes by spraying that expanding foam. THOSE RATS MADE A NEW HOLE IN FRONT AND I SAW THEM TUNNEL IN!! Smart buggers, and they act more like gophers. Forgive my long rambling, I'm goofy on no sleep.

Oh, when I opened the back door at 7am this morning, Peanut was sitting there waiting for me!! He hopped right inside onto the back porch with me and walked up for his henrys block!! :rofl4

Little rats are hard workers, I read yesterday that rats are one of the few species that have been proven to possess 'metacognition' ('awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes') although I suspect most creatures do.

tom, those rats ARE hard workers!! Little boogers know what they're doing. You should see how they got back under the house again! I'll try taking a video as I fill the most recent hole they made. Maybe if I hang an eviction notice for them, they'll be able to read it and take a hint! :rofl4

:eek :hug :Love_Icon Sorry I've been MIA on your thread....I haven't been on as much....and evidently, I've not been on when you're posting :( cuz you know I'd answer ya! :blowkiss First, I watched Peanut's videos and I came to the conclusion that he was eating from the side of his mouth (I did see in later posts that you suspect mouth issues) his eating slow isn't as worrisome because he's a good eater...not a shredder....it takes Fluffy Biscuit a while too...she eats it all :grin3 but it looked to me that he always holds the block toward the left side of his mouth :( not directly in front...like most squirrels...also his grip was not good....he dropped the block a couple of times on purpose (in the 6 min video) but he also fumbled with it a lot...almost dropping it. My youngsters could balance two things while eating. They are usually very dexterous :dono also, poor baby's eyes were trying to close :shakehead that's really odd.....they are usually hyper vigilant. I also didn't like how he moved at the very end ...when he was coming back towards you. His front legs looked clumsy..to me :( sorry, I definitely think he's got issues...whether from birth or that knock to his head. I also didn't like the look of that. In the first videos...which were latter videos...it almost looks like a BB hole :sadness I'm just so thankful he has you there to watch over him. Maybe with your care he will be able to adjust....he's making it on his own so far...although, not without trouble...like that hurt leg....and it did look like it was hanging ...all the way from the shoulder down :( I'm just glad you're already seeing improvement. I just hope he continues to stay in your big tree :please and doesn't wander too far :Love_Icon

Those pesky rats :tap it's really a shame...because they are very smart..and opportunistic....cities and all man's waste and trash just beckon them. Then they heard about the "whole food" cuisine served at your place :dono and well...who could resist :eek

Hi Honey! I've missed you! :grouphug:grouphug:grouphug

Thank you for looking over Peanut's videos. :thankyou He is definitely doing better than in those early videos. I need to post new ones. However, I, too, am sure that he was either born "special" or it was from injury. Clearly he had a head injury, and not only that front paw, but all the way up was hurt. Oh and I have a close up video to show his mouth, and you can tell it was also injured, like at the time of that head injury. Either was just injured, or also could it have broken a tooth? I have GOT to post new Peanut videos!

This little Peanut has stolen my heart...I'm in big trouble...I'm attached. I feel the same way, I want him to stay near and stay safe. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I think he's eating better than a few weeks ago, but not sure if it's still an issue? Could he have broken a tooth when he got hurt? Or you think just a mouth injury?

Nancy, that spot on his mouth is where I think he must have injured, and I think it was way back when he also looked like he sustained a bad head injury. I've always wondered if he was born "off", or if it was the bad injuries. I think he chews better than when he was initially hurt, but it's still not all the way right. I've wondered if he smashed his mouth when he hurt his head, and if he had also possibly broken a tooth or something? To me it looks like an indented area by that dark spot on the left side of his mouth. Oh, he also sustained a bad paw injury some time back, which went all the way up to his shoulder and side. He's been through a lot, and he's definitely different.

Nancy, when I zoom in to what you pointed to, it DOES look like something could be stuck in there?? I don't know. I'm person I thought it looked like an indentation. Now I don't know...

I'm glad he can eat ok. Have you watched him crack any shelled nuts lately? I can tell from watching his moments that there is something a little off there, but he appears to be compensating ok. hmm.. I can't tell what that is? It does look sort of like a thorn stuck in him? I get alot of thorns stuck in my skin and clothing from mountain biking and they look like that when they break off in you. They pop out very easily so if that is a thorn, it should work its way out pretty quickly.

Thank you TubeDriver!! I'll keep my eye on it and on him. I still think there's more to it. I think he injured his mouth when he sustained the head injury way back. I think it's what has caused him to eat the way he does. In the beginning, he had more trouble and ate more slowly, so at least I think he's shown improvement. :serene

tom, your video of little Ivy was so touching. I know many of us are missing our special sweet ones. I'm missing my sweet girl Munchkin terribly. It was this time last year I last saw her. I have a bunch of pics of her sitting next to me on the back steps, as she had her treats. I still can't figure out how to post pics from my phone, though. It always says file too big or something. :(

I think Peanut had an episode this morning. Anyone know about neuro issues, regardless of being born that way, OR brought on by head injury?

Peanut was waiting for me when I opened the back door this morning. I gave him his 1/2 block as usual. He got up onto the barrel under the cabana umbrella, and sat on the edge eating. Then a bigger squirrel came along and came up to me for treats, which startled Peanut. Next thing I know, Peanut is IN the barrel. At first I thought he was buying his block, but he was stuck leaning to one side and temporarily could not get up and out of the barrel. He was stuck walking around inside the barrel just going around in one direction, the direction his head was stuck leaning down. Does this make sense? When he did get out and down to the ground, he found the pecans I put out and started eating quite hungrily, BUT STILL LEANED OVER TO ONE SIDE THE WHOLE TIME HE ATE. HIS HEAD, I MEAN WAS LEANING TILTED TO ONE SIDE.

Then a mean baby came along and chased him. A while later, Peanut was back and seemed ok.

QUESTION: IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A SQUIRREL WITH SOME SORT OF NEURO ISSUE, TO HAVE SOME SORT OF SEIZURE OR NEURO EPISODE, BROUGHT ON BY BEING STARTLED? The first time I saw Peanut have an "episode" a few months ago, I CLEARLY saw him get very startled by another squirrel, like today, and immediately have this weird neuro thing happen.

ONE THING WORTH NOTING: This little episode today was nowhere near as severe as what I saw months back.

I am glad Little :Love_Icon Peanut got out of the barrel and is fine now, poor thing. Sounds reasonable that stress could cause an episode but more experienced members could answer better.

OMG, it's NOT Peanut, it's a different squirrel with something wrong with him, his head is stuck tilted to one side, something is really wrong with him, he just tried and failed to jump up to the fence and fell back down. He's one of mine but I'm not sure who. I sat with him and guarded him while he ate, now I'm not sure where he went. :sad

I have to leave soon for a Dr appt, but will look for him when I get back. I keep tearing up and have to stop so I can go to this appt. I don't know what to do, or if I even should do anything. I assume in a case like this, if I even could trap him, the wildlife hospital would just euthanize him? This is so hard, I feel SO bad for him. What on earth happened to him?? :sad

lennysmom
12-27-2016, 01:04 PM
Oh goodness, it's so hard to say what happened. Perhaps he took a fall and hit his head or something. It is possible that the wildlife hospital might euthanize him though in a condition like that.:( I guess it all depends on what is wrong as to if he could get better given time or not. I know it breaks your heart to see him like that - you have such a big heart for the fuzzers in your yard and they are very fortunate to have you looking out for them.:Love_Icon Praying for a good outcome for this injured one.:grouphug

Oh good Lord! If only the wild weren't so WILD! I guess one of the reasons we love the little boogers SO much is living through them their amazing lives spent on the edge. A bad drop, an unexpected predator, a zig when a zag was needed--can send one of out beloved super heros into the abyss. They are breathless wonderment--and then something happens. It's freezing out with a freezing wind and I'm sitting on the ground bundled in my robe waiting to see if he's coming back. He was just here again and ate. I had put out 2 plates of avocado chunks, just in case, and I found him eating some. When he finished I went out to show him I had nuts. He took 2 walnut halves in his mouth, and again went out via the big gap under the gate at the end of the driveway. I DID get video when he came back again this morning. I don't think it fully captures the head tilt, but we'll see. For now I'm just SO glad he keeps coming to eat. Oh and I got him to eat some of a Picky Block this morning. Oh! And get this! When he came back to eat again this morning, a bunch of others inconveniently came at the same time...AND HE CHASED ONE OFF, HEAD TILT AND ALL! This really impressed me, he's hanging in there and hasn't given up. :Love_Icon

I've seen my sweet one with head tilt at least once each day, yesterday and today not til afternoon. I have a new theory about him. Tell me what you think. It suddenly popped in my mind that I wonder if he is the one who had a large lump a while back? I had posted about one with a big lump, and said I wondered if it was as abcess. I need to give him a name, but for now will call him Head Tilt. I see a mark on Head Tilt, where an injury or something had been, maybe around the shoulder area. Is it possible, if he IS the one who had a lump or abcess, that it's in fact the abcess that could have injured a nerve having to do with head turning/neck muscles? Or something along this line of thinking?

Shewhosweptforest
12-31-2016, 10:14 PM
That's a possibility:thinking if the abscess was deep enough I'm sure it could have damaged musculature or caused nerve damage :dono poor baby :( as others have said at least he's getting the nutrition he needs....and perhaps there will be some more healing.....or at the very least...some adapting to his condition:please they are such remarkable little healers :Love_Icon I'm praying he will improve :bowdown :Love_Icon

My sweet Mr. HT (Head Tilt) was waiting for me this morning, as was my little Peanut. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon I took two videos of him this morning, and have a couple from either a week or two ago to post, also. Just my gut feeling, and what I see of him, I really am wondering if this has to do with an injury that has interfered with head/neck nerves or muscles. I initially assumed he had sustained a bad head injury, but I just don't feel that way now. I know I'm no expert, this is just from my observations of him. At times, you can't tell anything is wrong, it all depends on how he is trying to move and turn. Certain movements, if he's trying to turn to see me, can cause an extreme head tilt as he tries to turn, but other times, you can't tell anything. It really seems like something is damaged or "caught", stopping him from turning a certain way. I hope I'm explaining it so I'm making sense. :grouphug:grouphug

I believe there has been some improvement in him, for sure. That first day I discovered him with the head tilt, it was so severely stuck is a tilted angle, he got stuck inside the barrel and had a heck of a time climbing out, poor love. I definitely think he has shown improvement since then.

Hi Honey! :grouphug:grouphug

Well, I did notice the other day that someone got a boo-boo on their nose, maybe it was a mating injury?

I wish I had video of when I opened the back door...two on top of a little tree, one desperately trying to climb on the back of another, on a limb not strong enough for that! Poor guy was frantically trying, but it wasn't working...:shakehead. It was those two on this little tree, then a crowd of maybe four more on the ground. The two came down from the tree and joined the rest of the crowd for treats, lol! Hey, it's my motto, too, if mating isn't working out, stop and have a snack instead!! :thumbsup

I was gone much of the day, and did not see Mr. HT. I do think there has been some improvement, especially from that first day I saw him stuck inside the barrel, and fall from the fence when he tried to jump up. I'm trying to figure out if it's actual improvement, or adapting to his head tilt, but I think there is at least some real improvement.

I'm really worried about this weekends weather. They keep saying this will be the heaviest rain and hardest storm in 10 years! Ok I'm actually freaking out a bit. They're making it sound like the end of the world. The nonstop rain/high wind combo always scares me. :(

This is good, I do like to crack people up to the point of spitting out their coffee!! :grin3

I had SO many squirrels here all morning, it was CRAZY!! They must know it's a big big storm coming. They were not only wanting to hide food, but they were also eating and eating as fast as they could. Come to think of it, though, I was gone most of the day yesterday, so that's probably also part of it. Even Peanut and Mr. HT were here to eat!!

I'd love to get a better video of Mr. HT sometime, to show you the difference in head movement, depending what he's trying to do or which way he's trying to look. Certain directions he looks so much more normal, then when he tries to look either up or over to me or something, the turn and tilt is more extreme. I still have this theory that I wonder so much if he's the one that had the lump or abcess or whatever. I do think he's definitely running around much better than before. I'll keep an eye our for him and just keep monitoring him. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

I already know I have next to no chance of sleeping tonight. Weather report is that from around 9pm tonight until tomorrow morning is going to be the most severe part of the storm, with intense rain and wind. They said on their weather storm scale of 1 to 5 it's going to be a 4, then they said we've never had a 4...WHAT THE HECK??!! I know we had our big tree pruned heavily a year ago, AND they installed more cables on certain big limbs, AND the arborist checked on it a couple months ago, but I seem to still worry about the tree and my fuzzers when it's a big storm.

:shakehead :hidechair

Oh ya, the more I go around the house and plug rat entry holes, either with that expanding foam spray sealer, or steel wool, they just seem to make a new hole elsewhere. I should have just left the hole alone in front of the house, because at least then it seemed they stayed right there. Yesterday I found and plugged a couple areas in the front, and now in the night I heard the rat under the house but closer to under my bedroom...this is not the result I was going for...:shakehead:shakehead:shakehead. Lord, give me strength...Oh ya, and we don't have working heat in the house, either!! :crazy1 :bricks Don't mind me, I'm just venting!!!

I took three little videos of Peanut today. I do worry about him, not really knowing what all is up with the little guy. So, sometimes after eating, he'll go up and rest on top of a sideways laying trellis we have leaned against the garage. It's become a favorite resting spot, also they love chewing on it, so I've left it there, instead of using it, lol. It's their trellis.

I'd appreciate any feedback on Peanut, as in, can you tell if he's out of it in a "something wrong" sort of way, or is he just resting? Can they doze with their eyes open? When I see him like this, I sometimes think, is he having some kind of episode? Or is he sort of sleeping with his eyes open?

In one video, I zoomed in on his paw, to show how it sort of dropped down and dangled, like he was falling asleep. He acted like he didn't know I was there, like he was sleeping...or is it something bad, like he's having a seizure? I swear it seems like he's dozing with eyes open, but I just don't know?? I also sometimes wonder if his breathing is fast??

You've no idea how much I love my sweet Peanut...:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

P.S. He was soaking wet from the rain, that's not an injury on his back, he's just soaked

Hard to tell what is going on other than that he is wishing he wasn't wet. He is just too precious for words. It is hard to say, I don't think he is sleeping but his breathing does seem deeper (or at least I never notice that much movement when their resting/breathing here). The little Peanut is so special, I am so happy you can keep a watch over him and spoil him with love/care. Hoping you get some more feedback from others. The moment I saw him, back when he was in worse shape, trapping him was the first thing I thought of, but something told me not to, and now I'm scared to death I'd scare him to death, literally. It tears me up, wanting to help him, take care of him, "fix' him, but I'm also torn in the sense of feeling that maybe at this point, I should wait it out and see what happens, and let him live his life. Thank you all so much for trying to help me, especially when it comes to Peanut. I love them all dearly, but then he comes along and does that thing I was trying to hide from since my sweet girl Munchkin disappeared. That thing where they enter your heart so deeply that you say, uh oh, I'm too attached, I'm in too deep, I care too much, whatever it is that tears you apart when something happens to them.I guess for the time being I will do the best I can to keep an eye on him and help him, and try coming up with a plan if things get worse? This is new for me, I don't remember if I've felt this torn before about intervening. I think in the past, it had more to do with seeing one with an actual injury or wound, something they could heal from. This is more a matter of him being "special", whatever the cause was. This is more a situation where this is the way he is, and do I let him have his life and his freedom for as long as he can have it, or do I decide otherwise for him?

I can hardly see now, I'm crying too hard. Sorry.

It's really so hard to decide in cases like this. Some wild squirrels do ok in captivity and others do not. If you were to try and capture him, do you have a cage you could put him in? If he gets to the point where you feel like you need to intervene, you definitely already want to have some kind of set up in mind for him. I know it's upsetting, not knowing what to do.:grouphug:grouphug

Lennysmom is right....you may want to look for a cage....on Craigslist or on sale...I've found that the special squirrels usually do ok when brought in...maybe it's a relief for them...it takes time for them to trust....but look at our Momma Squirrel...she's the one you were asking about on Baby's thread...she was a 3 or 4 year old wild squirrel with teeth issues...we helped MBT with her....she adapted quickly to living the life of an NR :dono and if Peanut doesn't adapt....you can always let him go again :hug :Love_Icon whatever you decide...we will be here to help you through it :Love_Icon

Peanut was here this morning, he came at the same time as a few others, and they all had snacks. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

One video from yesterday, "chaos in the rain", when I had all these little ones running over at once for treats. I put out a dish of avocado, then sort of frantically tossed a handful of nuts, since I had a mob scene on my hands

crowd in the rain

https://youtu.be/moyqQv6xfvc

These two videos are of Mr. HT this morning.

#1, taken through the screen, so I did not disturb him as he ate a lot of avocado. I still think that mark, or scar, over his right shoulder could mean he's the one who had the lump/abscess. It's possible, anyway.
Mr. HT

https://youtu.be/6W4VGMhaQ8Y

#2, after eating avocado, as he came up to me. Notice, I think it's when he tries tilting his head UP, is when he has the most trouble? See how much more it tilts as he tries to look up at me? I gave him a dish of walnuts as soon as I stopped the video.

Awe CSL I had a very hard time watching the video of Mr H - my heart was breaking for him. I am so happy he has you to look out for him - he looks so sweet. I have had several nueros like that with the head tilt and as time went by some got a slight bit better while others got worse and several of them even got to the point where they could no longer function and I was only able to catch one (my Tipsy). Was Mr H in a fight as I see missing tail fur? Sending many many many prayers for Mr H. PS - Peanut looked ok to me in the videos - I have had quite a few who would actually sleep with eyes open - at least I assumed they were sleeping.

Thank you MBT. :grouphug

You know, I actually think I may have been wrong about Mr. HT. I totally assumed he was neuro at first, but quickly realized I don't think that's it. I think it's at least a possibility that it's not a neuro head injury type thing. I think Mr. HT MIGHT be the one who had a large lump or abscess on his right upper back/shoulder, and I think it caused damage. THIS IS JUST MY THEORY, but he acts just fine except for having trouble turning certain ways.

Chickenlegs

He's a beautiful guy. I guess a large abscess could cause all sorts of damage--muscular, skeletal, brain--all sorts. He has you looking out for him--and he trusts you. :Love_Icon

He's a doll, he comes right up to me, which is also partly why I think he's the abscess guy, who I've known for a long time. He's tough, too, he sorta charged at one getting too close one day a while back, so he seems to take care of himself. He doesn't act like he has neuro issues, that's more how Peanut sometimes acts. :(

Oh I really do see a pronounced head tilt in that last video of HT.:( Such a cute little guy too.. I do see that big scar and I defiantly understand why you would be inclined to believe the two are connected. Whether injury or absscess, it is so hard to say.. I pray he will continue to adapt and be ok.:grouphug

Yep, his head tilt is definitely more so when he is facing me, trying to lift his head up to see me. It's not that severe when he's eating or running across the yard. Ugh, I don't like mysteries, I like to figure things out. Not always possible, though.

The first video of Chaos in the rain, was so entertaining.
I loved how one little one went under the umbrella and ate.........very wise.
While another sat on an arm chair, still in the rain! :tap
Loved the cheeks on the little one to the right, ~18 second mark, is that Peanut?

About Mr. HT.
Owena does a huge head tilt when she is trying to see you.
Why? Because we feel she is totally blind in one eye, and has
some vision in the other, the one she tilts up. If you look at
her photos you will see that most of the time her head is tilted
that way.
As a baby she had severe head trauma, thus her seizures and
her "visually imparired " condition.
He is SO lucky to have you watch over him, he's just precious!

I'll have to keep watching him and keep taking video. When I saw him take off across the yard with a whole nut, he really ran well...I think...hmmm. Why don't any of you live near me?! :Cry It's weird, though, like Sweeper said, it does seem like he can't physically turn up a certain way, so he has to tilt sideways instead of up. If it were vision, would I see any other physical clues? Would either eye look different?

With any little squirrel it doesn't necessarily have to be only one thing.
I hate to keep bringing up Owena,, but she is neuro and also vision impaired.
Your little one could be like this as a result of the "abscess" causing some permanent
nerve damage, AND he could be vision impaired.................or non of the above. :tilt

After a bit of rain again yesterday, we've had A LOT all day today. Here are two videos of ButchKin this morning. My big moosekin first rested a while, relaxing on top of the barrel under the cabana umbrella. LOL, you DO realize that everything I do, everything in the yard, etc, is all for THEM?! My goal is to fix up the yard more in the future, with more posts, platforms, all kinds of things that will give them places to sit, lounge, hide, eat, whatever, LOL. We need more umbrellas out there, too, great protection for them, both from rain and sun. :serene

Two more ButchKin videos, taken maybe two weeks ago or so? Three weeks? LOL, four? Doesn't matter. To me, she looks SO much like her Papa, Butch, who at the time, was the biggest, roundest squirrel I'd ever seen. I miss my one eyed Butch, he was the BEST alpha male. There's just no doubt in my mind, there was never really any doubt, that ButchKin is the daughter of Munchkin and Butch, the absolute most awesome king and queen of squirrels. I guess that makes ButchKin a princess. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Oh ya, in the second video, after showing you ButchKin, I turned the camera to a baby eating behind her. Yes, the baby looks like Peanut, but it might be one that I think must be Peanut's twin. There is another baby who looks just like Peanut, but does not have that little black thing near his lip. Ya, I know I can have trouble keeping track of who is who.

I know I'm a sort of a weather wimp, but I'm having a tiny panic at this moment. THIS in this moment is what they described what was supposed to happen the other day!! This wind and rain came outta nowhere and just blew the back porch window out, the entire window in its frame, not breaking the glass, though, it landed on top of the wash machine. It's just my mom and I home, we put the window back. Such an old house, not a modern type window. I took a pic of it with my phone, but i still dont know how i resize phone pics to be able to pist them. I'm hiding in the kitchen at the moment. I look like this :hidechair

When this passes I feel like I have to run out back with a flashlight and look around. I'm scared for my babies :(

Well, I can see a limb is broken, kinda cracked and it's hanging lower than before. Not a gigantic limb, thank God, but it sucks more because it's on the crazy neighbor's side. My wonderful tree guy, arborist, is on his way here. How awesome if it's low enough he can just saw it off on the spot...

After going to bed last night, after thinking this storm was gone, MY GOSH, the wind got scary! I was up all night, I'm like a rag doll today. The doors and windiws shook, i could hear stuff outside, it was noisy and scary. There was a lot of damage in several cities all around, trees fell and crushed homes, lots of flooding, it's a mess.

I hope the rest of our tree is ok :(

He said it does not have to be removed immediately, I think another day this week. No idea yet what the cost, I asked him to give me an extra quote, for if they just cut it and leave it in our yard and don't haul it away, lol. I'll see if that would save much money or not...

Didn't one of you you mention you saw something weird with Mr. HT's tail?? Nancy? Sorry I can't remember, but I only now just noticed it on him. It's like a tuft missing on one side in the middle? Lord I pray that's all it is and he's not going to lose it. I've not mentioned it yet, but I've had a super skittish one who would not come near, for several weeks now, and the majority of his tail was super skinny, before a normal fluff at the base. Almost like it was tied in a skinny pony tail. Well yesterday I saw someone with a little stub of a tail, and I'm guessing it might be that same one and much of his tail finally came off?? I saw him yestetday and today, he's skittish and doesn't want to come close, but after all these weeks he seems to finally get it that I have food. He hid today under a barrel and I tossed nuts and a piece of avocado to him. I hope something like this is not going on with Mr. HT, and it's just a little tuft of fur missing from his tail.

California Squirrel Lover
01-11-2017, 06:03 PM
Oh it was YOU! Thank you MBT :grouphug

I didn't see it until today. From what I saw, it was maybe midway down the tail, and only on one side, a tuft of fur missing. It's all so hard to figure out for sure. All along I was thinking he was the one with a big lump on that spot that's now a scar, but that's only a guess. He's so sweet, and clearly knows me. Runs right to me. After eating, he always comes to me for a whole nut for the road, and some days, comes back for another...and another...and another...and yes, he can have whatever he wants! :Love_Icon:Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Also, FYI, at the time I had the abscess guy, there was definitely a period of time he disappeared. In case this really is him, I wonder if he was in even worse shape for a time, and didn't come here? Yes, I know I'll never know, I just think out loud to you guys. :grouphug:grouphug

It's been swollen, and she's still limping, so it's taking a while to heal. Peanut is goofy, I like it when he stays nearby. He loves poking around the yard and burying nuts. I've even seen him chase some others, which is hilarious, he's so little. Mr. HT seems to be ok, I think there's been some improvement from when I first saw the tilt, but there is definitely still some tilt. Well, that was wild, as soon as I posted that last post, I went outside and got video of Stubbs. The first part of the video and the last part are of my little purple eyed girl. I know I mentioned her a long time ago, but probably not since then. Way back when my little Peepers lost an eye, I also had an eye injured one with a purple eye who did not lose their eye. I've come to believe she's a girl, and have yet to introduce you to her. She's such a sweetheart, and has a wonderful appetite. When she does come around, she stays a while and eats and eats. You cannot see her purple eye in this video, she was facing me with her good eye. A few weeks back, I was showing her to my husband and telling him about her purple eye, and how I thought her name should be connected to Prince, both my purple eyed squirrel Prince, as well as the Purple Rain Prince himself. He immediately named her Apollonia. (she was in the Purple Rain movie). I waited a while and asked him again on another day if he was sure that was her name, and he said yes it was, lol.
Notice how Stubbs came RIGHT up to me, to get the nuts I had on the ground in front of me. Amazing. :)

It can get real cold sometimes. We have had several days this winter where a cold front moved in and we had freezing overnight. Does that affect the problem eye? I've noticed occasional goopiness on the ones missing an eye, is that from cold weather?

I love, love, love my babies :serene

Amazing. :)

So, I formally introduce you to Apollonia and Stubbs. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Consolidating all these videos, and adding one more. This is of our big tree. I zoomed in to show you the stub from the limb we had to have removed a few weeks ago from one of our big storms. Sad, it was one of their favorite limbs to lay across and rest. :( A little one was up there while I filmed this. It's so shaky, I took it from so far away and was trying to hold up the camera.

Managed to get two large henrys block to them, plus they ate avocado and nuts. They didn't get super close to me, but were so hungry, and knew I had food, so they didn't run off, thank goodness. rain, rain, and more rain!! Today's rain is being called the calm before tomorrow's big storm. Enough already, please. We're going to get washed away! Lots of mudslides, downed trees, flooding, freeways flooded and closed, but thankfully not in my immediate area. Supposed to be another big one with heavy rain and heavy winds, a combination I hate. My crew are going absolutely crazy today, both eating and hiding. Lil Hungry Guy (our new friend) has been here, and ATE. Two and a half large wild bite blocks, lots of avocado, then nuts. Small, skinny, and hungry. Super smart, super on the ball, doesn't get super close to me, but close enough, and immediately understood I've got food for him, and he stays put and looks at me while I toss him the blocks. :grin3 It was insane, I had everyone here eating at the same time in the pouring rain today, this new one, Little Man, Mr. HT, Stubbs, Peanut, Peepers, another little who looks just like Peanut, plus a bunch of my other regulars, little ones plus older ones who are much darker in color and totally look related, but I've never named them. ButchKin only did a drive by, grabbing a nut and taking off, still not fully healed with that front arm and paw and still some limp, not sure what the heck she did, poor love, but she's a total trooper.

Couple videos of the new Lil Hungry Guy from this morning. Video never quite does justice, not sure if it will fully reflect how scrawny he looks. So so glad he found us, no idea who he is or where he came from?? :dono I zoomed in to look at his arm, trying to figure out if fur was just wet, or if there's fur loss?

After ridiculous amounts of rain, we finally have a break!! :bliss

Supposed to be dry for a few days, with more rain due later next week.

I feel terrible for the MANY people who have been so badly affected by the flooding and mudslides. Many news stories of homes crushed by downed trees, or demolished in mudslides. I agree with TD if your new little guy can make it for another couple weeks he will be fine. My new little hungry one was here, and ate a large henrys wild bite, then nuts, then I left him an entire plate of avocado, which I hope he found. :Love_Icon

Also, after all my worrying about Peanut, he's becoming a crazy, bossy little thing, which I'm actually hoping is a good thing. He was chasing the heck out of someone this morning, really wanted them to leave.

ButchKin still has some limp, it's taking a while to heal. Ever since she hurt herself, I don't see her as many times a day. I'm wondering if she's not longer living in our tree :(

ButchKin was just here, after not seeing her for TWO days. Not sure what that was about, but I'm feeling a sigh of relief that she's here now. Yes, Peanut is a little nut! Some mornings he is sitting on the barrel by the back door, waiting for me, sometimes alone, sometimes sitting with a buddy. :Love_Icon

This morning, 7:30am, I had a crew of my little ones waiting for me, with my little one eyed PEEPERS knocking at the back door! :rofl4 He's not a bold one, so I was surprised it was him knocking, and he stepped inside the back door to get his HHB. :grin3
So, picture 6-10 of my small guys coming from around the corner to get their HHB! NOT all at once, though, lol, they trickled in, but it was hilarious to see so many sitting around with an HHB, and would have made for a great Henry's ad!! The new little starving one was even there in the crowd, and ate THREE BLOCKS!! :thumbsup My sweet purple eyed girl Apollonia was here and also ate a lot. :Love_Icon

ButchKin came by briefly, had some avocado, then took nuts to go. I think her focus is on taking pollyfill from the yard cushions to fix her nest. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Someone is hurt, I think it had just happened when I saw them. I opened the back door and had several that had been eating the avocado, I started tossing nuts to everyone, and heard one making a sound under one of the barrels. It reminded me of that "go away" sound I hear when a male won't stop following a female, so at first thought it was that. But it was kinda different, then I see one come out from under the barrel with blood coming from their eye, they're really hurting, they were cowered down and sort of shaky, but kept hunkered down eating the nuts I was tossing. OMG, I can't believe another eye injury like this. I'm having a meltdown with worry, and even more worried if it could have been my Little Man. Please pray for this hurt one, I'm assuming already they're going to lose sight in that eye.

Here's Mr. HT (Mr. Head Tilt), he was here today. Overall, he's definitely had improvement, but it's when he is facing me directly, and tries to look up at me, when he has the most difficulty moving his neck/head, and sort of looks up at me sideways. I really think this all stems from that big cyst thing he had on his neck or shoulder quite some time ago. He seems perfectly fine, like a totally normal squirrel, except for the inability to totally turn his neck or head a certain way. Other than that, he really seems totally normal, and I have to say, he's seriously one of the sweetest squirrels ever. I just adore him, he comes running to me when he sees me, even comes running up to me in the doorway. He's so sweet. :grin3

I hadn't seen her for a couple days again, and she was just here eating. She actually sat with me and ate. I see nipples poking out...

Little Man in my lap. He was waiting for me and came running in as I opened the door.
Very impatient, wanted a whole nut

I love this sweet boy :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Didn't see ButchKin until after 5pm again. I feel sure something is up with her...babies?? She's on higher alert than usual while she's here, listening, and doesn't seem to want anyone coming near her.
She's really a beautiful girl. :grin3:Love_Icon

I saw ButchKin in the yard, she's not wanting to get near other squirrels lately, so she was staying her distance. I tossed her a walnut half and she sat and ate it. :Love_Icon:Love_Icon

Here's my sweetie Mr. HT, who was just here eating, then took a treat for the road. When I give them a whole nut, I tell them it's a "treasure", lol!

Mr. HT :Love_Icon:Love_Icon (see, he looks totally normal. It's just when he wants to look way up at me at a certain angle that his little head has to tilt. :Love_Icon)

Hey, my little starving one is here!! Presently eating Henry's Wild Block #3!!

Turns out this one does have some kinda funny patchy fur on the arms. No idea if it's normal stuff or if anything is wrong. Maybe time will tell. This one is just incredibly smart and sweet. Still can't think of a name for this one. Then again, most of mine don't have names.. :shakehead :hidechair

Sweet little hungry one:

Not a good pic, but I think this is my latest eye injured one, poor love. ( the one from just a few weeks ago was it??) The injured eye is not the one facing me, it's the other one. I really want to get a better look, because from a distance, the injured eye looked unusual to me. I can't quite tell how injured it got, or what color the eyeball is. From a distance I thought it looked reddish?? Hope to get better pics sometime.

LATEST eye injured sweetie, good grief...
