Default 7 week, some labored breathing w/mild click sound.

Sadly, my baby inhaled some formula with an over-aggressive uncontrolled syringe sucking. It is a higher end o-ring, and I use finger control to prevent most incidents of her over pulling on it, along with subtle dips of it to prevent full latching. but I failed and she inhaled. I tipped her, and removed the formula that bubbled out of her nose.

However, she quite rapidly developed an increased rate of breathing, combined with a small clicking sound. She's sneezing a bit off and on, and still breathing out of her nose, and still fully active and seemingly doing fine. The only symptoms noted are a slight increase in frequency of breathing (rapid) but not labored, and a small clicking sound.

Should I start her on antibiotics immediately or monitor for improvement or regression?

Also, when/if I start her on Baytril, what would the dosage be? She is approximately 6.5-7 weeks old, and around 175grams in weight. The Baytril I have is 10% at 100mg/ml.

    Thank you in advance!

I sent you dosing by PM.

Aspiration pneumonia takes a bit to develop and snorting and sniffling is normal for a few hours after they suck the formula up into their nose. The instant you see lethargy that she normally doesn't have, or her appetite decreases, start medicating her.

Please read through the directions I sent you and ensure that you are absolutely sure what to do. It is fine now but on Saturday I am under hurricane/trop storm warning and very likely will be sitting in the dark without board access to answer your questions.

    Thank you!

This morning she appears to be much improved, and the clicking seems to be completely gone. I am going to check her with a Stethoscope shortly, and see how she feeds. I am monitoring her as instructed for any lethargy or reduction in appetite.

    Morning update:

No audible 'clicking' from her plastic home.

When I picked her up I could hear audible clicking but seemingly more from her nose, than her lungs. Breathing didn't seem to be negatively impacted other than being fast, but I think that may be her sniffing really fast.

    Weight check in - 175g.
No noted lethargy - same activity as previous days.
Feeding was aggressive and fulfilling with her precise amount taken from the previous days.
Exploration/Activity on me post feeding was normal.

Post feeding a 'slight' clicking, but it seemed more nasally than lung. No labored activity present, no gaping mouth or anything.

Do you recommend I dose anyway as a precaution, or continue monitoring for any change?

Once again, thank you for the assist.

I would continue monitoring; the fact that you are able to watch her so closely and monitor with the stethoscope is wonderful. I am very confident you will recognise any behavior change as soon as it happens.

    Evening check in, second day.

No apparently clicking. Breathing appears normalized.

Her diet was normal this morning and for lunch. Dinner she took quite a bit less formula but I am writing this off as today was her first day with a shaved off part of Henry's Health Blocks in her container. It looks like she was indeed nibbling on that. So I am going to assume she had a reduced formula dinner as a result of that.

No lethargy, no clicks, no labored breathing. She was not happy about her bath/cotton ball swab off activity today one bit - feisty - so I know my girl has a lot of energy. So I am holding off on any treatments and pushing forward. Phew!

Thanks again for the help, at least I have the Baytril on hand if something comes up.
