Exclamation Fast Heart-rate Baby Fox Squirrel

Hey Everyone, I'm new to this. Two fox squirrels fell out of the tree in my yard (pacific northwest) they are not native and would be euthanized. The girl had a leg injury and bloody nose. She healed and recovered. The boy was fine and high energy. It's been 5 days and we have been reading and doing everything possible right. Esbilac, water, whipping cream. Girl's eyes were open, the boy had one eye open when we found him. We're guessing between 4-5 weeks.

    Boy weighs 156 grams
    Girl weighs 150 grams

Today I noticed super fast breathing on the boy and when I hold him I can almost feel his heart exploding. He has been eating fine, poop, pee is fine. He was much more active and now he seems tired. is he lacking something? We even give them some sunshine whenever it's possible.

He has little tiny popping sounds, but not all the time. it's only when something scares him until he relaxes. he doesn't want Pedialyte.

To be safe, I called around and I can't get Moxy without prescription. I also can't get Baytril without a prescription. of course I can't take him to the vet because they will kill him.

What do I do? I want to save hs life!!!!

Listen to his chest. Do you hear clicking with every breath?

What antibiotic do you have around your house? You only need one pill.

Edit... I missed it... The popping sound you describe is the same as clicking. It is aspiration pneumonia. You must get antibiotics. Call friends and family.

Thank you so much for replying so quickly!

When I listen to his chest, all I hear is his little fast heart Since I'm really healthy, I don't have and haven't had any medication in my house for about 6 years

the sound happens only when something scares him. He would do it for maybe 10 rounds, then it stops and you don't hear it at all anymore.

It's the fast heart rate that scares me the most. The girl is normal

Even though it's not constant I feel there is a very good chance this is aspiration pneumonia. The lethargy is another sign of pneumonia. Has the appetite decreased? The rapid heart beat could also be related to pneumonia. It's clearly something that's different or you wouldn't have noticed.

Do you have friend or family that might have a left over antibiotic?

I'm new to living here, so I don't have anyone I know. If I ask a neighbor - would it be anything specific to ask for?
He ate normal this morning, the second meal he was a bit picky. He doesn't want Pedialyte at all. He is asleep now on me and his heart rate seems to be calmer, but not like before

But I thought they only help native squirrels and kill others

If you're not near this rehabber, I would ask the neighbor. Ciprofloxacin, Septra, Bactrim, doxycycline, tetracycline, Amoxicillin.

Are you near a city that has a pet retailer like PetsMart, PetCo, etc?

Some rehabbers will, but this rehabber will NOT kill your baby.
    I wouldn't trust other rehabbers.

Thank you a bunch! They are both amazing people ❤️❤️ They said everything is fine with the boy and they both look very healthy. The boy probably freaked out from something and cause him to breath heavy.

I'm so grateful to you for bringing me to them. Thank you and all my love 🙏❤️

Thanks for the update. Aren't they just awesome!

I'm very happy to hear that your boy is OK. I'm also happy that you have a local contact now. That is the best news yet.
