Hello, I have a female eastern grey that is about 5-6 months old and she has a really dark red (rusty brown) urine that has a very pungent odor to it. She also doesn't urinate in very large quantities right now either.

She seems to be very healthy and eats a lot of veggies and is quite plump.

I'm concerned about a bladder or kidney infection or something else. Any ideas?

Hello
Squirrels are pretty prone to bladder infections in captivity but that may not be what is going on here. Is she eating a lot of acorns? They can darken the urine and give it some odor. If she isnt eating acorns and is going quite frequently in small amounts then it probably is a bladder infection. Do you have a vet that can run a urine sample to see if it has blood in it? That would be my advice is to take a urine sample to a vet ASAP and have them prescribe meds if necessary. Bladder infections are miserable so I would do this soon! Good luck ! Stacey

Thank you Stacey. Yes, they are eating acorns, only about 2-3 a day though. I have 3 others and this is the only one that seems to have the problem. At first I thought it was the fresh cranberries, but I've narrowed it down to this one squirrel and would think that if it was food related, it would be all of them having red urine. Thanks for the help, I'll check with my vet.

You may be able to get a homeopathic remedy to help if it's a UTI...
Does she seem to be in pain and straining? Mars is the one to ask...she's awesome.

It's great that it sounds like you have access to a vet that will help you. :thumbsup If you want to follow up on the homeopathic approach, send a Private Message to Mars and she will help you. (Let us know if you need help figuring out the PM function :) )

And :Welcome (we would love to hear about yuor other squirrels as well, and .... we LOVE pictures!! :D )
