Do squirrels shed more at certain times than others?

Josephina's tail seems to be shedding a lot when I pet her. She likes to be held like a baby a petted, so I don't think it's stress, but she's shedding like a cat all over me. Is that normal? I don't ever remember her shedding so much.

Yes, my boy just finished his tail - was looking pretty thin, then the next day it seemed to double in size! Now his flanks look like they were shaved and each one has a single tugft of long hair on the top - so silly looking!
