Are you sure that you're dealing with lice?

I just worry with your little one being neuro, and ivermectin being so toxix.
My vet dilutes the 1% and then puts the correct dose on the shoulder blades
    like MM explained.
We can dose this by weight if you want.

Try looking for a safer alternative first though.

so because it would have been impossible to pick them off and bath her i have her a dose of ace.. she never went totally asleep .. that's exactly what i wanted.. I washed her really well in the Blue Dawn..with towels in the dryer and her bed/House washed and in dryer as well (sanitized in washer and dryer).. i blow dried her on low and taped off most that i could see till she started waking up.. there are tons of Nits though.. really close to her skin and my human lice comb isn't fine enough to get them.. i dusted her with food grade DE to maybe get some of the nits.. I'm not positive it's lice but its ether lice or some type of mite.. i used my camera on zoom and it sure does look like lice.. but about 2/3 the size of human head lice.. they are very tiny, but big enough to speckle her white fer under her chin.. so a drop of 1% topical it is.. how often should i repeat?.. I donno how she got these lil guys.. she has NEVER been outside other than when I got her at about 4 weeks old.. could she have had them all this time?

    THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!

    I agree... what is 'ace'?

I have to agree with Nancy. I would not use ivermectin on a neurologically compromised squirrel. Ivermectin IS a neurotoxin. If the blood brain barrier is intact as in a 'normal' squirrel, ivermectin has been used in squirrels but even then it is risky and has caused death if overdosed. In a neuro squirrel where there might be a compromise in this 'normal' barrier, it would most likely be fatal. I personally would not risk that.

That's very risky. I wouldn't use that on squirrels. They're not like cats or dogs. Narcotics have to be dosed carefully and you have to know it's safe for squirrels. Squirrels are very sensitive to sedation. Just yesterday a squirrels heart stopped bearing twice while under sedation during a tooth extraction.

HRT.. I did not know that about ivermectin. I know Pink and this info on toxicity was not in WMB. Eek... For future reference where can I find that.. ? Cause I am the goober that reccomended it :/. Did not know it was so toxic

Ace was obtained from a vet who gave it to her permit holder to sedate critters for exams and the like so as to not stress them.

    Would DE have handled this?

my permit holder is who got the ace from her vet so we can treat adults with limited stress.. Gator doesn't get baths so knew without a doubt this was going to stress her and with her balance issues i didn't want to risk her jetting and hurting herself.. My permit holder gave me the dosing.. information about ace isn't exactly what i was asking about on this thread.... but thanks for the information.. but on a good note Dawn kills Lice.. i couldn't find any information on that .. but knew it was safe for her to be washed in.. i think we are on the right track to getting this under control...

I have never lost a baby by using Ivermectin 1% and I've been using it for more than 5 years ~ 200+ squirrels
Have you found it to be effective with lice? WMB said "some" lice. So we were hoping to use revolution or something else but was not sure of its safety.
I'll try to upload a pic of what Pink sent me.

They did not look like fleas .

I just saw this baby a month ago and there was nothing but the picture of healthy and the picture I saw today looked like the poor thing was eat up!

I haven't dealt with lice ...yet I do however use Revolution for other nasty critters. I haven;t used ivermectin on any that I have my hands on as I think that Revolution is a bit more controlled. Ivermectin seems more like a large animal treatment and it seems I have read of others having issues with it here on TSB.

I used it once per my vet on a "rehab" squirrel.
She diluted it, and measured the doses and gave
me the syringes of it. Coral only needed the one dose, topically.

You must ALWAYS dilute, dose according to weight, and give topically.
It's too risky in my opinion as well.
I will stick with Patti's recommendations.

Justt a word of caution, acepromazine increases the action (including risk of side effects) in a number of flea/parasitic medications...

    ** "Contraindications

Phenothiazines may potentiate the toxicity of organophosphates and the activity of procaine hydrochloride. Therefore, do not use Acepromazine Maleate Injection to control tremors associated with organic phosphate poisoning. Do not use in conjunction with organophosphorus vermifuges or ectoparasiticides, including flea collars. Do not use with procaine hydrochloride." **

I always check interactions between, even flea and parasite meds, if I'm giving more than one drug no matter what it is :-)

Those lice pics are more what I thought they looked like. They are at the base of the hair rather than out on the end. I wonder if they are some sort of mite rather than lice.

I had an intake this fall COVERED in what turned out to be fur mites. ... easy to confuse with lice and they could have been carried in by a mouse that is taking advantage of crumbs the squirrel might drop out of the cage? It would explain how he ended up with them

BTW I treated with revolution and they were all dead within an hour or two

The beauty of this board is that we can all share experiences from what we read,
from our common sense, and/or from hands on.
Many vets even consult with other vets, and some even say
    they are unsure.

There is not any one member that knows it all.

Even with rehabbers that do HUGE numbers, there is always
discrepancy in their methods, from which formula to use, up
    to what drugs to dose.

I learn from MANY people on this board,
and will continue to learn through this collaborative effort.
As I said years ago..........it takes a village............
