My sister and I recently were given a baby squirrel by someone who found her after cutting down a tree. We were advised to use Kitten powdered milk replacer. The baby’s eyes are still closed and she is 70g. We aren’t sure we are feeding her the correct milk and would like some advice.

Actually, kitten formula isn't recommended for baby squirrels. It has too much protein. Get powdered puppy Esbilac with probiotics and prebiotics.

Your right, it is not the correct formula...
What you want is the Esbilac puppy formula with pre & pro-biotics. Powered not liquid!
Squirrels follow canine not feline, the KM does not contain the nutrition they need and
it causes diarrhea which leads to dehydration.

The reason I asked is because you might want to do a hydration flush to get that out of her system and then start over with the powdered Puppy Esbilac.


Homemade Rehydration Fluid
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar or apple juice
2 cups warm water
Store in refrigerator. Discard after 24 hours.
Note: If the baby refuses fluids, try leaving out the salt.

Yes, that is pretty common with kitten formula. I would definitely give one hydration feeding. A couple hours later you can give her the Esbilac puppy formula.

I would probably make it 3 parts water to one part powder puppy Esbilac to begin with. Let her tummy get used to the new formula. Then I would go to full strength which is 2 parts water to 1 part powder. See how she does. Kitten formula and then a switch will get her tummy in an uproar but she will get through it. You definitely have to switch.

I’d give the hydration fluid for a couple of feedings at least. It might take longer to flush her system of the KMR. She can use it with the diarrhea she’s experiencing.

How often are you feeding her?

What kind of a container do you have her in?
What size syringe are you using?

I've been feeding her 3ml every 3-4 hours. She is in a plastic box with a heating pad underneath it, with fleece blankets inside. I have been using a 10ml syringe.

Check your syringe size again. 10 ml is pretty big. Are you sure it’s not a 1 ml syringe?

Using a 10ml is very risky, harder to control the flow volume,
using a 3ml even a 5ml would be a much better alternative.
