    Default Temporary Shelf Material

I read somewhere here about a material that’s heavier than cardboard, but that can still be cut with scissors (I think??),

Until I can get my husband to make me some from wood, or buy the metal ones, does anyone know the name of this stuff ?? I want to be sure it’s not toxic ; kind of sensitive about that word right now

But I need something temporary to replace the destroyed plastic ones. And I’ve learned (too late for these) how to wrap them well so this stuff will last awhile, hopefully…

I'm not sure of something like that, only thing I can think is chip board or particularl board and both are a no go in my opinion.
I'd just use the real deal 'SAFE WOOD' 👍

I wouldn’t use anything but untreated wood or metal. Anything that can be cut with scissors can easily be cut with a squirrels teeth. Any of the MDF or particle board products are held together with some type of glue. Who knows if that glue is toxic? I’d use either metal or plain untreated pine for shelving.

I dont have a good solution for a temporary fix, but I highly recommend the metal pans. They are easy to clean and 100%chew proof (well of course lol).
One of my rehabs I think it was actually Tiger.......chewed through the pillow cases and blankets to destroy the plastic liners.
You will love the pans and because of their depth there is less mess around the cage as an added bonus.

I'm intrested in these, do they fit in the Critter Nation cages? Where can you find them?

This is where I ordered them from and I use Midwest critter Nation cage.

I ordered 3 of the shelf pans, because I don't use the devider section on my triple layer squirrel apartment.
I also didn't order the bottom pan and just keep a thick layer of blankets in the bottom.
To keep the noise down I still wrap the pans in blankets like I used to with the plastic shelves.
I bought the pans in the beginning of 2020 or the end of 2019 and they're in mint condition.

    Thank you.
I have 2 three story condos, so total 6 shelves each....I wrap them in fleece but occasionally they chew through on the mid level , I may order for that area and hope they don't Start chewing the other levels....if so I'll replace them all👍
Just curious, it says ferret Nation replacement pans, do they work in the CN cages?

One other thing, did you buy the galvanized or the stainless steel? I'm just wondering how the galvanized holds up 🤔

I have the stainless steel ones. Super easy to clean, no rust or corrosion at all. Safe for squirrels.

I would not buy the galvanized pans. The acid in their urine will cause it to rust.

My wild adult buddy Imp (temp rehab) chewed up an impressive amount of the Critter Nation bottom level pan. I bought the stainless steel bottom pan from Bass Equipment because I read that galvanized steel can hold on to urine smells (plus eventual corrosion).

It took 5 weeks to be get the Bass pan. Being a wild adult, he never seemed to ingest any plastic but it still concerned me... So I put in a floor of thick layers of cardboard covered in newspapers (for urine absorption and faster cleaning), and replaced it frequently as he destroyed it. Then I got a pine board for a floor. Most big box hardware stores will cut down boards for you. It might be an option for a temporary shelf material. He chewed the board up too, but it was safer and lasted longer than the plastic! I stuck smaller pieces of wood in as he made progress on the main board.

Imp went on to chew a corner of the lower level shelf. Knowing how long it took to get pans from Bass, I tried a sheet pan from Amazon. It is aluminum so definitely could be chewed, but it fit nicely in the Critter Nation shelf bracket. It might work for a temporary fix. It turned out that Imp just wanted a hole in the shelf to jump through: once it was Imp-sized, he stopped. Very funny to watch him dangle upside down through it. He only ever chewed a little of the upper level plastic.

However, when I got the stainless bottom pan Imp tried hard to bite it and the cage wall above it. Affixing a piece of pine 2x4 to the cage wall above his biting spot got him to chew the wood instead (hardware stores will cut that too- all you would need is to drill a hole and use a bolt, washer, and wingnut to attach). When the wood got too small he would go back to biting the pan and wall in that one spot. Occasionally he totally rejected specific wood pieces but trying different pieces did the trick. I lined the Bass stainless pan with kraft paper on top of cardboard to give a little cushion and keep it drier.

The aluminum pan that fit the Critter Nation shelf bracket was "Winware ALXP-1622 16-Inch by 22-Inch Aluminum Sheet Pan, Pack of 1". Currently $22 with free returns.

Love the name “Imp”, it seems to fit him ha! Sounds like you’ve gone to great lengths to create something that works! I’m hoping to order this weekend. The temporary tile pieces are like our alarm system every morning when they get up and hopping .

Yeah, if I had a NR or even a steady flow of rehab squirrels, I’d definitely order the stainless trays. My plastic ones have been destroyed by the few squirrels that I’ve had over the years….in spite of keeping them encased in fleece.
