Thumbs up Troy NY or Albany NY area. Need help or a baby sitter.

We are currently looking for someone in the Troy, Albany, or surrounding areas, who can help us look after an adolescent squirrel for a week at the end of this month and/or a couple weeks in mid-December. We will be traveling for work and for the holidays, and we desperately need help. We will compensate for time and supplies, or local travel expenses.

For more information, a description, and the story behind our little guy, please see my album description located in my profile named Trooper.

Thank you so much and hope for some replies.
    Cheers.

    Daniel.

She's very cute! Hopefully we can find someone to help you. Do you not have friends/family available? Also, would a sitter have to come to you or could she go to them.

After reading the bio and looking at the pics, I'm concerned about two things. We STRONGLY recommend that squirrels not be allowed outside unless they have been prepared for release through the "soft release" process which you will learn about here. I cannot count the tales of woe where a squirrel got spooked, climbed too high and got scared, etc. never to return and probably to find a terrible death.

Also, what kind of rodent pellets are you using? Some are absolute garbage made from corn, seeds, and various bits of junk. Nutrition is job one with squirrels, so we're pretty serious about it. The best rodent blocks are Henrys, but those have to be bought online. In stores Mazuri and Kaytee Forti-Diet seem to be some of the best. Here's a link to the proper nutrition chart:

You are right about the winter, most squirrels of this age in the wild spend the winter with mom, so most of the people here overwinter their fall babies and release them in the spring.

Welcome to TSB! Hopefully we can hook you up!

Thank you for the quick reply. I'm glad to be a part of TSB.

We just moved here at the start of the semester, so don't know that many people yet. Although, there might be one new friend that we are thinking about asking. I would just like to ask and go through the experts first. Squirrel care is a BIG job.

Over the last two weeks we have stopped bringing him to the park for exactly that reason. He is getting to fast and curious to keep up with. He will climb the tree and stay up there for a long time, unless we bribe him with food to come back and sometimes that take a long time too. I fear that he may run off somewhere and get lost. He's definitely not ready to be out on his own yet and it's getting cold. So thank you for re-affirming this for me. It is noted.

Henry's Rodent Pellets are the ones that we ordered for him. Most of my studying on squirrels was how to feed them properly with the right nutritional content. I got a lot of advise and tips from here as well. I think it was here that I heard of Henry's Rodent Pellets. I am very grateful for this forum. I have spent a long time in here. .

I figured as much about the winter. I have heard other people say that it would be ok to release them, so long as we were there to replenish his food and water. This didn't sit well with me, which is also why I decided to create this account. Again, thank you for re-affirming that for me.

Thank you for the advise and the welcome. I hope we can find someone soon.

Glad to see that you're so knowledgeable and contentious. You'll fit in well here. It'll probably score you points in trying to find a sitter too.

I don't think you answered about whether they would have to come to you or if Trooper could sleep away at camp.
