    Default Flying Squirrel Manual

We're looking for a flying squirrel REHAB manual. We know the basics, feeding percentages and all that, but I'd like a guide on when to bump from 6 feedings a day to 5, to 4, and something going over the best weaning foods, when to start giving them, etc. Right now he's only 9 grams so we're feeding every 3 hours, but we're not sure when to cut back. All is well so far.

Too bad we only have the one. If anyone in Missouri is reading this and has a single that they're willing to give up to go with this little one, please email me. We would be willing to give ours up for him to be with a friend. Thanks!

Sorry you haven't gotten any replies, but I don't think there is a manual. the best you could do is study the threads, especially the stickies, in the flyer forum:

    http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/f...rel-Discussion

If you have any specific questions, start a new thread. And if you're looking for a new home for your baby, post a thread in the non-emergency section. There has been a bit of that of late.

Btw, I think that unlike sugar gliders, they're OK alone, as long as they have a lot of human interaction and not just left in a cage.

That is so sweet and noble that you would give up such a sweet little monster! I was told it was okay for flyers to be singletons because they will bond with their caregiver and then once released they will bond with a flyer colony. I am sure you know by now that the "Skuls" are the flyer experts, so please ask them, they are very wise and nice too. As for books, there is an old one that is out of print..but I can't remember the name just now. There is another book called " Wild Mammal Babies, the first 48 hours and Beyond", by Debra Goode and Irene Ruth and GUESS WHAT - It is on our Raffle right now. Yep you can buy a chance of only $1 or more and that puts your name in for this book. That's a good deal since the book is around $65 (I think that's what I paid?). Anyway this book has an entire section on flyer babies & it is easy to read and use. I have only raised three boys and I loved them dearly. I love, love, love flyers! Welcome and good luck! ~Staci

    Hi skunkangel
    Hi Saverywood

The name of the book you are referring to is, The Flying Squirrel: King and Queen of the Pet World by Curt Howard. I don't know if it is a rehab manual but I have heard it is the best book around about flyers.
Unfortunately it is out of print and I have not been able to find it.
I know that doesn't help much.

I used to work with the Howards and learned a lot about flying squirrels at the time. I've forgotten a lot now too though. Darn. I do remember that Curt had his breeding down to a science, and he always had a waiting list going for his babies. People would drive for miles and from other states, just to get one of Curt's squirrels. I know I also had a copy of his book at one point, but it is probably in the same place as my mind...lost! I need to get another copy. So I did a little searching and look what I found! Two places where you can purchase your own copy! I don't know anything about brisky.com, and their price is higher, but S & S Exotics is not far from me. I may just need to make a field trip out there and get one...and who knows what else I might find...

Here's a little funny story. When I worked with the Howards, they had a female flyer named Christina. She was the sweetest, and most tolerant little girl one could ever hope to meet. When customers would come in inquiring about flyers we would introduce them to Christina. We would hand her to the customer and right on cue, she would run up their arm and down their shirt. Some customer reactions were absolutely priceless! They would then get a bumper sticker that said "A Squirrel Ran Down My Shirt at [store name]". Looking back now, and knowing what I know, it probably wasn't the safest thing for little Christina, or her victims, I mean the customers, but luckily no one was ever harmed by the earning of said bumper sticker!

Thanks for the info SBF. I'll buy one today. I found the brisky.com site awhile back but when I added the book to the cart the shipping was MORE than the book. The book is small so I thought the shipping was ridiculous so I didn't buy it.
WOW, you worked for the Howards. That's kinda like living with the Skul's.

Hey, what's going on here. You DON'T have any flyers! What's that all about?

I know, right? I always had an excuse why it wasn't a good time to get one. Looking back now they were all pretty lame and could have been overcome. And then when Curt passed I convinced myself that if I couldn't have a Howard squirrel, then I didn't want one at all. I should have just gotten one! There is still hope for me though!
