Flying squirrel- rabies concern or not?

Moved into an old home in rural Virginia. Discovered flying squirrels and used live trap to catch humanely. They’re so small that I’m not sure I’d notice a scratch from one. Neighbor said I need to worry about rabies and now I’m anxious on whether I need to get a shot!! Should I look into that?! Never had to deal with this in the city - haha! Thanks!

Your neighbor is completely off the mark but has a lot of company out there. People think rodents carry rabies when the truth is, most of them do not. You need not worry about the flying squirrel having touched you and believe me, if you try to go to your local health department for a rabies shot, they won't give it because it's not necessary. Sleep well!

IR is correct. In fact, flyers are remarkably disease and parasite free. Give them half a chance, and they'll steal your heart. If you are keeping them around while looking for a rehabber or a place to relocate them, please provide them with a good diet and plenty of water.
