Hello Deanna -
Unfortunately I do not have reliable information for dosing azithromycin or even if it is effective in treating Aspiration Pneumonia in squirrels. Hopefully someone will ahve the needed info, but if you are able to locate any other antibiotics... Augmenting / Clavamox, Baytril / Cipro and many others are known to be effective... let us know and we'll provide dosing instructions if we are able.
Squirrel Advocate
Hello Deanna and welcome to The Squirrel Board! I am sorry about the problems that appear to be going on with your Squirrel! What is his name? Spanky is reporting the lack of experience most all of us have in using Azithromycin with Squirrels. There are a number of other commonly available antibiotics that most all of us DO have experience using with Squirrels and Spanky has mentioned most of them! IF you do have any of these or can get even one tablet of any of these from a friend or relative, that would be best! Again, only 1 tablet is all that is needed.
Although there is lack of experience using Azithromycin in Squirrels, going by its bacterial coverage and its use in other rodent species (and in the general Veterinary practice for canines and felines) for respiratory conditions; Azithromycin may be an effective antibiotic for your Squirrel, IF indeed he has a pneumonia BUT we lack experience in using this with Squirrels!
What abnormal behaviors are you noticing that lead you to be concerned about a pneumonia? Was there an aspiration of formula or food that you witnessed?
With what both Spanky and I have said about the lack of experience with using Azithromycin in Squirrels, there is some documentation for its use in Rats! I subscribe to at least 5 different Drug formularies for Exotic Animal pharmacologic treatment and I have a wide variation in dosing of Azithromycin in Rodents and some specifically with Rats and Mice. Most of use in the "Squirrel World" have used other's experiences in treating a Squirrel's closely related species, the Rat and IF you want me to figure a mixing and dosing protocol for your Squirrel using Azithromycin, I would consider dosing so under certain conditions that I will send to you as a Private Message but will include these; 1) that there is some definitive clinical evidence suggesting a pneumonia (these are abnormal changes in behavior that are consistent with a pneumonia. 2) that is the only antibiotic you have available is Azithromycin!
Please describe what is going on with your Squirrel and again, I would strongly recommend trying to obtain one of the antibiotics mentioned by Spanky! Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or Amoxicillin plus Clavulanate and Augmentin is a human brand of this and Clavamox is a Veterinary brand) but the generic, Amoxicillin plus Clavulanate just fine (no brand named medication is required). Please see if you have any other antibiotics available or that you can expeditiously obtain beside the Azithromycin because, as I stated, we have experience with those mentioned by Spanky but no direct experience with using the Azithromycin to treat our Squirrels. Sorry!
Regards,
SamtheSquirrel
