Default AP- Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim Dosing Help

    Hello!

I took in a baby squirrel whose nest was in a tree that was cut down and mom was unable to be found. I've had him for over a week now and things have been going well, started with a rehydration solution and have fully transitioned to esiblac via 3cc syringe, however he aspirated a couple of times while I was getting the hang of feeding and has since developed clicking- suspected aspiration pneumonia...

I have a bottle of sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (800 mg/ 160mg) double strength from my horse med collection and am wondering if this is a good option, or if I should find a better/ more fast acting antibiotic. I would likely be able to get most antibiotics on Monday from a large animal vet, but don't want to wait to start treatment, as his condition has progressed from last night to today. I just weighed him and he is 80 grams. He is still taking formula and I am keeping him nice and warm... Please help me with dosing, any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much in advance!

Hello, welcome. One of the admins will be able to answer about the effectiveness of that antibiotic and what the dosage would be. I do know that to administer any of the antibiotics it will be turned into a liquid form, they will give instructions for that, you will need a good 1 ml syringe with clear markings on it. But I will say you’ll want several as that’s the size that should be used for feeding also. The 3 ml as you found out is was to easy to aspirate with. As they get older they also develop more suction and you will need to be ready to hold the plunger back because they will take it faster than they intend to also and it’s magnified with a 3ml because of the surface area of the plunger being larger. 1 ml syringes can usually be gotten at a drug store but you have to ask for them. Ask for the syringes without needles and tell them you’re nursing a baby kitten, that’s usually well received. The next fastest option to get some would probably be your vet. Henry’s Healthy Pets sells them also and whether or not you go that route I would highly recommend the silicone mothering nipples. I attached the Henry’s Squirrel Care Guide which is pretty spot on except for the use of Fox Valley 32/40. Stick with the Escbilac powdered puppy and Fox Valley 20/50 formulas. They changed the 32/40 a while back and the guide hasn’t been updated yet. Somewhere around 5 weeks you can start to transition to the 20/50. A popular way to go is to transition to half Escbilac half 20/50 until weaned.

I have sent you dosing for the SMZ-TMP, and based it on your having only a 3ml syringe to do so. If you can find a 1ml syringe, please let us know and I will recalculate based on that. You need to get some to feed the baby - 3ml is just too big to control - it allows too much formula to come out too quickly.

    Hello,

My girl, about 3 years old, I think is getting some kind of UTI infection? She's been peeing a lot and has some tenderness. Her weight came out to about 500 grams. What would be the dosing for her? I also have those 800/160 Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim tablets and have access to both 1ml and 3ml syringes.

    Thank you!

I'm using this for aspiration pneumonia. Had to make me an telehealth medical visit in order to get it but I'm having a hard time finding dosage information.

What is the strength of the medication and is it a pill? Sharing symptoms would also be beneficial.

    800/160 Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim tablet

Lethargic, loss of appetite, clicking when breathing, rapid breathing. She is still very responsive at the moment.

She aspirated x2 this weekend on me. Over exciting feeding. Never had an issue feeding her before but it came out nose.
Tried tilting down to drain and suctioning but it didn't work all that well since now she's not
