    Default Corid 9.6% Dosing Info

Idk where to begin.. it’s a sad situation. A lady was raising a baby squirrel on powdered goat’s milk Esbilac, and ultimately neglected him. By the time I got him, he had AP, an infection on his penis from genital suckling, was severely dehydrated and absolutely emaciated. He tried to go off his heating pad for two days. After treatment with a dewormer, Albon, Baytril, and tons of sub q fluids, he pulled through, and was doing really well on FV 32/40 but then out of nowhere, diarrhea struck. He’s been on diastat for 12 hours and I plan on feeding him that for 24 hours then transitioning him to FV 20/50. Is this a reasonable plan? I read on another thread to consider coccidia and treatment with Corid 9.6% from Tractor Supply could be used. Could someone assist with the dosing for an 80 g baby? Thanks in advance.

I believe 32/40 isn't good yes you want either esbilac or 20/50.
As far as dosing someone here will help you
Good luck with the baby 🙏

The Albon is a better choice for treating coccidiosis versus Corid. Corid may have been suggested if other meds were unattainable as Corid can be purchased "over the counter".

Can you share the coccidia symptoms he is exhibiting? Pictures of his poops would be helpful.

For how many days was the Albon treatment used?

For stubborn GI / Diarrhea issues my go to medication is metronidazole (AKA Metro and Flagyl) if you are able to locate some. Metro is also a antiprotozoal (coccidia is a protozoal).

I would include diarrhea that persists after 24 hours of DiaStat (also a "go to" for me... I am a big fan) as "stubborn".

And for completeness, Toltrazuril (Baycox) is probably the most effective treatment for coccidia (and easiest to dose... only 1 dose is needed, though giving another dose 7 days is sometimes suggested). This can be purchased on-line using the following link:

I just washed all the blankies and took the trash out. There's nothing solid coming out of his butt - pure liquid and ranges in color of a dull/muted yellow to a bright yellow. Albon was being used for something completely different and he was on it for 5 days.

I'm able to get the Albon again, but how long should he be on it? Or I can get Baycox. I have the dosing for 5% via the WMB book.

What was the Albon being used for?

Just so I do get it wrong... he got DiaStat (and not Electrostat) for 24 hours and still has watery diarrhea?

It is critical to keep all the linens clean and change them frequently since the coccidia (and other nasties) is in the fecal matter and reinfects. Double and triple vigilance is required when they are infected.

I would recommended using only bottled water just in case there is something in the tap causing this...

I see you are in SC, are you in the Upstate by chance? I wish you could get Metro and I would dose him with Baycox if you can get it.

The Albon was for the infection on his penis from the genital suckling (it was yellow, filled with pus, but caught early enough) - it was the only antibiotic we had on hand at the rescue. I was able to get the Baycox and administered the first dose. I'll do another dose (just in case) in one week, per the instructions.

Yes, he was on diastat for 24 hours and STILL had watery diarrhea. I couldn't believe it! Because it's been 24 hours, I had to reintroduce formula because he was so hungry. I will continue with electrostat in between feedings as well.

    Thank you.

While I treated with Baycox last night and it may be too early for it to work, I did get a photo of the diarrhea (see photo below). Straight liquid, mucus, sticky (may not be the right word but it’s stringy?) and yellow. The other normal poop is from another squirrel that does NOT have diarrhea and is in a separate container from my boy.

He is being fed Fox Valley 20/50 mixed just as directed (2 parts water and 1 part powder)... I ask because adding Heavy Cream is sometimes not
    tolerated by some babies.

I do not know how long he has been receiving electrolytes (electrostat / DiaStat) but it would be worth considering using plain water or water with just a bot of honey / molasses in it. Giving electrolytes over too long a period can result in an overload of electrolytes; too much of certain electrolytes can cause diarrhea.

No, personally, I’ve never had a good experience with any of my squirrels when heavy cream or Ultraboost was added to the formula, so I don’t use them. The 20/50 is being mixed based on the instructions on the bag and I add the FV LA Probiotics to the mixed formula when it has cooled down. All of my babies are on 20/50, but this guy is still having diarrhea days after Baycox administration (he’s being isolated from the others just as a precaution). I’ll add honey to the water since he doesn’t seem to like plain water lol. This was his poop this afternoon (cross referenced in another post dedicated to diarrhea).

You might consider giving a drop or two of pepto-bismol or kaopectate (they are the same active ingredient but different flavors). Even repeat every 6- 8 hours for a dose or two... it usually results in dark, even black stools so do not be alarmed when this happens.

I wonder about the formula, if it is a bad batch. If you have other formula, different bags or lots I would consider switching to eliminate that as a possible cause.

I gave him pepto and this was his poop after. I have 4 total squirrels, all on 20/50, and 2 have diarrhea that look like this. Those two that have diarrhea have never been in contact with one another and are from different litters. I think I’ll make formula with bottled water.

That the two with the diarrhea are not in contact or litter mates supports the theory that there may be a formula issue, and that could be the water source. We've seen folks that had raised and released multiple squirrels over multiple seasons and all of a sudden there are issues like this that switching to bottled water resolved. Sometimes there are changes in water supply... especially "municipal" supplies... the changes may not be communicated to the customers, because they are not significant for humans... but sometimes it's enough to impact small baby squirrels.

On the other hand, there is another member experiencing similar appearing diarrhea issues (which is new in my experience), also feeding Fox Valley 20/50 so that makes me nervous about potential formula issues FWIW.

Is everyone involved putting their formula powder in the freezer as soon as they get it and keeping it there?

Hmm, it’s hard to think it’s a formula issue because I have Jade who’s thriving and gaining 10 g per day and all 4 are on the same formula. Can you send me to the post about the diarrhea issues with 20/50? I’d like to compare lot numbers and will reach out to Henry’s. Yes, I put my milk in the freezer immediately. This was the first time I purchased the 3.5 lb size and I split the formula with another rehabber. But her babies are much younger than mine and she hasn’t used it yet. She’s transitioning with it right now for her new para, so I can follow up with her to see how he’s doing.
