Hey guys,

Firstly thanks for the add. So I’ll get to the point. My neighbors dog was found carrying a baby squirrel in his mouth the neighbor thought it was going to pass away so he put it next to his garage. He came out the next morning and it was still alive so he came and asked if I could try and save it. I’ve had the little guy for three days now no visible injuries as far as I could tell from the dog encounter.. He was only 60 grams when I got him he is 66 now.. but it has been tough to get him to eat since the start. Tonight was the first time he actually nursed himself. He got down just shy of 3ml. I did rehydrate him with pedialyte and warm him before attempting formula when I first took him in he was pretty lethargic that first day.
I have a miracle nipple attached to the 3ml syringe it came with. Today I feel like he is breathing with his mouth open a tad.. I’m not sure if I’m being paranoid or not I don’t feel like he’s making any noises at least not consistent enough for me to notice and I’ve been staring at him sleep pretty frequently.. when feeding him he did make like a yawn twice but that was it no bubbles out of the nose or anything. Could he have still aspirated or would he only be making that clicking noise if so? The only medicine I have on hand at home is 500mg amoxicillin.. any help or advice would be much appreciated!

This is what the little guy looks like. I’m not sure how old he is. Best guess by all the reading I’ve done is around 3 1/2 -4 weeks ears are open but not eyes he does have two small bottom teeth.

Thank you! I visited this site when I was initially looking for info! I have some fox valley formula on the way it should be here tomorrow! Right now I’ve been giving him esbilac.

Stop using a 3ml syringe and get a 1ml. High chance of aspiration with bigger syringe.

Is he on heating pad setup like Henry's says ??

Do you have any experience rehabbers near by ??

I worry that he was out in the cold and not getting fluids.

Yes, he has been on a heating pad set up since I took him in.
Will the miracle nipple work with a 1ml syringe? It came attached to a 3ml
I called the rehabbed that is near me and she just had surgery so isn’t taking animals at this time. I’ve raised up other species of babies before( raccoon,rabbit) that were successfully released so thankfully I’m not a total stranger to this. The breathing seems to be normal I just feel like his mouth is slightly ajar if that makes sense. I don’t hear any sort of noise coming from him breathing.
That was my biggest concern as well that he laid outside in the low 60s

I did give him pedialyte unflavored at first
If I lightly pinch his skin over his shoulders it goes back down now within 1-2 seconds

I worry about the aspiration as well… thats why I was wondering if I should give him amoxycillin just to be safe.

Do you have 1ml syringe ?

Amoxi works okay but better to try to amox-clav for best results. its Augmentin or Clavamox. Very common for humans so ask family and friends. Good to have on-hand if needed. Another is Cipro, common for humans.

I'm not an expert in baby care. Follow Henry's guide and other TSB members will chime in.
