    Unhappy Lost squirrel

    Hi everyone,
I’m new here. I think I did all the website I could find to find trick to find my squirrel. I live near Montreal, my squirrel is missing since yesterday.
I’m devastated, she has never been outside, I had her for one year. She was so scared and went away.
I need some cheers up, is that something that ever happened to someone, I’m lost, I don’t know what to do. She was my everything.
I put her little nest on my front porch, food… Peanuts all around my house, I went 3 times the same way she did before I couldn’t see her anymore, I tried to play a video of her scream outside so she could hear.
What should I do? She’s a 1 year old female..
Thank you for everyone who had the patience to read me. I’m truly broken. She was the only thing I had…

    Hi Scratouille:
Thanks for finding The Squirrel Board!
I'm so sorry that your little Squirrel is missing! What is your Squirrel's name? I can only imagine how you are feeling! Sammy is the only Squirrel I have ever kept and not released and he never did "go missing" although there were several close calls; so I do not have any direct experience with the locating and returning home of a pet Squirrel who got loose. I believe what you are doing is good strategy and that is bringing her "stuff" outside. I would suggest bringing her home (cage) outside also and leaving the door open with some of her favorite things and foods inside it. Most often, Squirrels that were raised for release and never kept as pets; return to their from Release Cages after release; some for days, weeks and even months, if the release cage remains available and the door is left open. They return there for familiarity, safety and food and I would think that your Squirrel might very well do the same. Go outside and talk softly to her as if you see her, just as you did while she was inside. There are of course risks out in the wild but Squirrels, even those who have never been in the wild, are still wild animals and their instincts run very deep and are very strong and they will kick-in help your Squirrel to survive!

Please look at this thread: https://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/...ighlight=annie
This is a thread posted by one of our Admins, StepNStone, whose Squirrel named Annie got out through a second story window. There is probably some useful strategy there for you!

My hopes and best wishes are with you and your Squirrel and I hope for a quick reunion for your both! Please keep us updated on how things are going! Again, I am so sorry this happened!

    Regards,
    SamtheSquirrel

The outdoors can be very scary for a squirrel that has never been outside, and not being familiar with this new environment will make it challenging to find their way back. With that said, I do believe your squirrel will try to find her way home. And on the bright side, as a female she is probably less likely to get driven off by local squirrels than a male.

I would suggest that you try to spend as much time outside as possible to make it easier for me to find her way home and call to her. Squirrels can recognize you by sight or voice from quite a distance. And put out multiple sleeping options for her that have her scent in them.

I had a young squirrel Dustin escape back in 2014 when he was about four months old. I was terrified, as it was December, cold, etc. He disappeared on a Friday morning, and when he did not return by early evening I moved his nest box out to a post in my backyard. No sign of him all day Saturday, with me out in the backyard as much as possible. On Sunday, we went to a family event all afternoon and did not return until well after dark. I went out to check, and there was a very hungry Dustin poking his head out of the nest box after being gone two and a half days!

OMG my heart goes out to you!! My Charlotte that I had for 9 years passed away on July 26, 2022 this month will be 1 year. 2 months ago someone found a baby gray squirrel in the middle of the road it was brought to me and I finally had love in my heart again. Unfortunately she passed away on June 12 because I left her at home while I went to work with her cage open and she chewed on an electrical cord. My Precious Bella I will never forgive myself because I knew better I miss her so very much to this day I cry everyday for her. I will pray that you find your baby because I know exactly what you're going thru.
God please have her baby come home to her momma.

    Liz
