Is this just regular molting?

Hello everyone! There's a squirrel living in my back yard, but he's been looking mangy lately. Is he just molting?

Since you have him in person, do you see any sign of redness or irritation like scabs, etc., on those spots? They look pretty smooth and healthy to me.

If the answer is smooth and healthy, it likely is just molt. The black squirrels can't hide this - like most black animals, their skin is whitish under the hair, so any thin spots really show!
