Default Newish squirrel not doing good

Feeling very overwhelmed and frustrated. Randomly found this forum by googling green poo in baby squirrel. I found this squirrel 9/17 in my back yard. It just fell from its nest. I have cats so I locked them inside and played a baby squirrel nose with my phone in hopes it’s mom would come. Hours later and no luck. I couldn’t leave him outside or he would have gotten eaten. He was doing well when I found him. WhenI realized the closest rehabbed is goes from me I tried to find out what to feed him, and all I could find was garbage articles on how to get him back to his mom or to a rehabber. I went to tractor supply and got the only thing I could find, kitten formula. Now, the last 2-3 days he has green loose poo and is clearly not doing well. I’m at a loss and wish I found this forum on the 17th. Please tell me what to do or if there’s a rehabber anywhere near Montgomery AL.

Well, the formula is a problem. Kittens need WAY more protein than something like a squirrel and the formula has that, but it is an issue for animals that aren't carnivores.

Call your local chain pet stores - a place like Petco would have it. It is Esbilac Powdered Puppy Formula: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcos...pplement-26689

There are a ton of others, and you don't want any of them. Look for that cute puppy on the can. It needs to be Esbilac, it needs to be powdered. The place you got the kitten formula may have it. When you get it home, store it in the freezer. It will blend up just fine.

As long as the baby has diarrhea you need to supplement it's fluids. Hydrate in between feedings.

Can you tell us how old he is? Or if not, put up a pic.

Thank you, he is somewhere between 3-4 weeks. His eyes are closed and the fur is still super soft. I went to the pet store and they were out of formula, but the manager of the store stared asking questions. As I answered them and let her know it was for a baby squirrel, she let me know she has experience with raising squirrel babies. It was truly a Godsend. The baby is now safely with a dear woman who will help get him back on track and thriving. This has been such an emotional rollercoaster.

Excellent. It is a helpless feeling, isn't it. Everyone here felt that once. Of course, nobody came to our rescue and we raised the first one and after that there is no hope for you...!

Yes it is a very helpless feeling. My eyes still sting from tears. Fears of harming that poor baby and tears of relief knowing he’s going to have what he needs now. I really appreciate you reaching out to me and recommending the pet store. I’d still be panicking if I hadn’t gone there.

Bless you for helping that little one.

Most of us know that helpless, tearful panicked, fearful of harming while having no idea what a little squirrel needs and yet feeling the responsibility of helping, as the squirrel came to us out of the blue, we weren't asking for one, they just showed up in our world when we least expected it.

I remember being in that panicked state and running out into the backyard in desperation asking an actual squirrel mom to please help me; no answer was forthcoming. But my human mom friends had no idea how to help a squirrel, only human babies. I eventually found TSB.

It was a very humbling place to be that is for sure. You've done well. :-)

  8. Serious fuzzy thank you's to Lighten-Up from:
