Default Watery eyes and white discharge from eyes.

I have a Indian palm squirrel, healthy and fit. But since yesterday her one eye is watery and having white discharge sometimes. It was little red yesterday so I thought she might have scratched it by mistake. It is still not ok. Also sneezing since few days.

The doctors here in my country don't have much experience. Please help.

Welcome, Supriya. Sorry your little palm squirrel is having troubles. They are so tiny and cute!
A running eye and sneezing could be something as simple as a rhinovirus to something as complex as an odontoma on a tooth. How are your squirrel's teeth? No issues with overgrowing or malocclusion?

You can rinse the eye with contact lens solution to soothe it, and apply terramycin opthalmic drops if you are able to get them. What worries me is the sneezing and the white tears. White tears often mean pain; if the squirrel is in pain it may be more than a cold.

Hello, thank you for the help.
The teeth looks completely fine, not overgrown and properly aligned.
I will try to have the medicine and see if it works.
Hope she will be fine soon.

    Thank you so much.

    Hi there,
The eye was getting better yesterday and day before yesterday but today again it is watery. The drops what you have told isn't available here in stores. I have ordered it online but it will take some time as it's complete lockdown here.
Are there any other home remedies that will help till the time I get the drops?

I have talked with the vet and he said hot or cold compression around eyes.

I am still not able to get the medicine here after waiting so long. The situation is not good here because of lockdown. Today the 2nd eye has started showing the same symptoms. Please help!

The white tears are from pain. The pain could be from anywhere not necessarily injury to the eye. Is the squirrel moving around ok? Do you notice any limping? I assume you’ve looked over it’s body and see nothing unusual?

I’d treat it for pain. Can you get some infant ibuprofen? The infant type is more concentrated so you can give less. Another option is metacam or tramadol, both of which are prescribed for humans. If you can locate any of these and you let us know the strength of the drug and the weight of the squirrel someone will help you dose it.

Can you get a look at his teeth? Are they the normal length, or has something changed? Looking for two possibilities - the top teeth have reduced to the size of tiny numbs, OR, the bottom teeth have gotten long enough that they are piercing the upper palate of the mouth.

I really want to thank you all who has tried helping me.

@Mel1959 @CritterMom - Her teeth are completely normal as well as the activities she is doing.

Finally I was able to go to the vet day before yesterday, and he told me that it's an infection. I got the drops as well as some supplements. After applying the drops for two days it feels like she is getting little better. The left eye problem which has started recently is completely gone, it's just the right eye and I hope that will get better too.

    Again, thank you soo much!

Hello. I have two 5 week old Indian palm squirrels and one of the baby's left eye started watering yesterday. It's not white though. It is colourless. And sometimes, the baby looks like it has a black left eye because the liquid wets the fur around the eye( and dries in a few minutes). But it keeps happening. Only in the left eye. Is it also an infection. Please help.

Hello Mam, I have also a furry friend just like you have. She is one and a half year old Indian palm squirrel. We rescued her when she fell from the second floor, probably 1day old, without any fur.

She is also having the same problems that your squirrel faced, with watery eyes and white discharge from the eyes. Here in my place, there are no experienced vets to help.

We talked with a distant vet on the phone and he said that it's an infection. If you could please tell us which medicine you used, then it would be very helpful.
It's a sincere request mam.She is really troubled with it. Please help !

White discharge in the eyes is a sign of pain. Has anything happened to her recently, like a fall? Have you looked inside her mouth and checked her teeth to be sure they align correctly and they’re not puncturing her palate?

Do you have access to Rx medications from a vet if you know what to ask for?

Terramycin is an excellent medication for the eyes. It usually comes in either a cream or liquid squeeze tube. It's used for both people and animals, so maybe someone around you has some left over from an eye infection?
