    Default Litter box questions

Hi everyone! I wanted to get a litter box and start litter training my squirrel. I’ve seen that squirrels will poop in there but they won’t pee in the litter box. Right now she for the most part when with me will only pee on me and has even peed on my hair but it is usually my clothes. Is there any way to have her not do this? Im guessing she is marking me as hers? I’ve been searching for a litter box but pretty much all of them seem to have plastic and I’m afraid that while I’m not with her she will chew it. Is there any litter box that doesn’t have plastic or any alternatives I can use?

I have the corner litter pan, plastic.
Yes, it's been chewed on but still holds and functions.
Just recently discovered Etsy has metal (stainless) ones.

In my cages with wire floor over pan, I leave a back corner uncovered about 3" X 5".
I have been very amazed and pleased how my crew(s) do use that corner as well as the pan.

I also have a plastic corner box which my two use to pee in. They poop everywhere however.

Yes I have also been wondering the same thing. I rescued a baby and been raising her ever since. She is full grown now I believe and I have her in a cage. I'm wanting to let her out to run around my room with me but I'm afraid she'll pee on everything as she use to pee on me as well. Is there anything I can do to prevent her from peeing on any furniture and clothes if I let her out to run around?

Not one thing. They pee wherever they want. They seem to delight in peeing on their person.
Babies can be trained to use a litter box for peeing if introduced early. They can not be trained to poop there.

I remember a lady that had a squirrel that would go to the sink to pee. I thought that was clever but she pooped on top of a door.

Yeah I want to but i'm afraid to let her roam free in my room just because I dont want her peeing on the carpet, bed, couch or anything like that. I want her to be able to run around and play more than she can in her cage. I ordered her a bigger cage so that she has alot more room because shes just about out grown the one she's in now but I'm waiting for it to get delivered. I wouldnt mind the poop soo much just because it's easier so see and clean up. I want to be able to take her out and play with her but her claws are SOO SHARP! Every now and then, when I'm cleaning her cage or filling her water bottle up, she'll escape by running up my arm and reek havoc on my neck and shoulders because that's where she stays when she gets out.
That is hilarious that lady had hers go pee in the sink! 😂
I wish I would've introduced some sort of litter box when she was younger but I was always afraid she'd chew up the plastic corner pans that I saw. I but an old blanket or old towels down at the bottom of her cage so its soft and I think that's what she uses for her bathroom lol.

This is a homemade litter box. It is a metal baking pan from Publix. Drill a couple holes in the sides and get screws. This screws will hold the hardware cloth down. Bend the hardware cloth down on the edges. The litter is Care Fresh.

You will notice that your squirrel uses a particular spot in the cage for a toilet. Put the pan there and you might get him to use it.

🤯🤯 that is a really good idea and invention!!
I've done research on some and that is the best I've seen, that's awesome.
My cage now has a removable grate bottom with a removable plastic pan under that grate that catches all the poop, food, pine cone bits etc.. every time after I clean it I line it with dryer sheets to help if it smells or to help "soak up" any spilt water or pee. My crazy girl reaches through the grate and takes every one of the dryer sheets and stuffs them in the little hanging bed I have hanging at the top of her cage 🤦*♂️I bought her a little fluffy hanging ball on a rope toy, from then site I buy her food from, and every day she tries to take that with her into her bed but cant because i have it attached to one of her platforms 😂😂

Also, I havent heard of hardware cloth. Where would i get some of that? I'm sure it's not harmful to them since you use it right?
