Exclamation Open sore on bottom of foot. Advice for bandaging and calming aids!

Looking for help please! I have an adult grey squirrel with an open sore on the bottom of her foot. I have been doing manuka honey treatments which have worked in the past for her. This time the location is different it’s right on the heel of her foot and she cannot stay off of it! I have moved her to a small hospital cage and she’s wearing an e-collar. I have been bandaging the foot with the honey on a gauze pad wrapped with vet wrap but she keeps getting the wraps off! I am afraid to wrap too tight as I don’t want to cut off circulation. Does anyone have tips for wrapping a foot/leg? And does anyone know of any natural calming aids that are safe for squirrels? CBD oil? She’s very agitated and won’t stop bouncing around even in the small cage. I wish she could understand that she needs to rest it to heal! 😔 any advice is appreciated! She is my no release baby (6 years old but my baby!) and I am terribly worried about her! Thanks in advance.

Although Manuka honey has some medicinal properties it does not take the place of antibiotics or antiseptic washes. Get some Betadine (povidone iodine) and dilute some with some water till it looks like strong tea. Wipe her foot down several times a day and allow it to air dry. Do not rinse it. This will not hurt her if she were to lick it.

See if this helps dry it up without covering it. It does not leave a residue like honey does and she may just leave it alone.

Can you post a picture so others can see it and determine if antibiotics are warranted?

Great, I will definitely give the iodine treatment a try! I’ll also try to get a pic the next time I treat her. Thank you!!
