Exclamation Antibiotics to treat possible aspiration pneumonia

I have Uniprim powder on hand (for my horse). Just need to know if I could use it in a pinch for an 8 week old squirrel with possible aspiration pneumonia. Each gram of Uniprim Powder contains 67 mg trimethoprim and 333 mg sulfadiazine.

Working on getting Baytril but I don't want to wait too long to get antibiotics on board. If Uniprim would work, anyone know what the dosage per gram would be for a squirrel? Thanks in advance!!

Yes, it will work. It’s SMZ-TMP. Give me a minute to figure out the dosing. How much does the squirrel weigh? I think it takes longer to work which is why it’s not ideal.

You will need a gram scale to get the squirrels weight. Does your powder tell you the measurement for 1 gram of powder?

I'll look at the container when I get to the barn but I just googled it and it says this: Powder is 3.75 grams per 110 lbs.

We need to break the medicine down to the recommended strength which is 50mg/ml. So about 1/8 of a gram measurement.

Ok so it says the dose is 3.75g per 50kg. So if I am doing the math correctly, the dose is .075g per kg...so .00075 per g? So if she weighs 228g, the dose to give her would be .0171g? That seems like an extremely small amount. Did I do the math correctly?

I have a young squirrel possible 2 months old. She sounds like she is making a whinny sound like a baby puppy. This has just started.
I have reached out to several vets here in NC and get absolutely no help. It may be a infection in respiratory so I know I need antibiotic, but no help from vet.
Anyone got an alternative or herbal suggestions. that I could use?

You may want to put this in the emergency thread so it doesn't go unnoticed 👍

Call around to family and friends to see if you can locate any antibiotics. Cipro (human) Baytril (animal) or augmentin (human) or Clavamox (animal) are all good drugs to treat AP. You will likely only need one pill and it’s ok if it’s expired. Please post what you find.
