    Default Seizures

I have a 2 ½-year-old non-releasable male squirrel. He has neurological damage, a head tilt and seizures. The seizures are only partially controlled. He is taking gabapentin .15 ml 3 times a day and phenobarbital 2.5 mL 2 times a day. He is also taking 1 drop of CBD oil 2 times a day. I am wondering if there is anything else that any of you can suggest to help with the seizures. He is one of those rare squirrels that is as sweet as you can possibly imagine. He has never tried to bite me and even licks the last bit of the baby prunes I mix the medicine in off my finger. He’s a great eater and loves to play. He lives outside in a 6’ by 4’ by 7’ cage. I would like to do everything possible to help them. I appreciate any and all of your suggestions. Thank you!

Reducing excess sugars in the diet is also key, yet it is the hidden sugars in grains that can continue to exacerbate neuro-seizure conditions.

Are you sure on the dose for the phenobarbital. (2.5 ml twice a day?) I’m not sure what the dosage is on that drug but that sure sounds high to me.
The newer anti-seizure drug Kepra has been used with success.

What is the diet? I just want to rule out low calcium as a contributing factor.

My 20 lb (9000 gram) dog is on 30 grams of of phenobarbital twice per day per seizures, and the vet said that is as high as he can go without risking kidney/liver damage.
That comes out to around 1 gram per 300 grams body weight... 1:300 ratio
So 2.5 for a squirrel around 400 grams (1:160 ratio) does sound like twice the normal safe dosage.

However.. it seems he is using a compounded liquid version. Would have to know the ratio of dilution (grams per ml).

Some folks here have seen reduction in seizures by giving 1-2 almonds per day. This should not cause MBD as long as he is on a healthy diet primarily of rodent blocks along with fresh veggies. I would NOT stop meds but consider adding an almond or two per day.

    Hi Joy,

I have a friend who used a homeopathic veterinarian to control seizures in her dog. It has worked extremely well. I would highly recommend that as a supplement for your boy, but I would definitely use a vet trained in homeopathic, especially since he is taking such a strong drug as phenobarbital. Often a consult can be done over the phone with homeopathics.

We would love to see pictures of your boy!

Magnesium is known to reduce seizure activity in rats.

Pumpkin seeds contain the higher amount of magnesium per equal volume and equal weight than do almonds according to the USDA.

    (See Selfnutrition)

    Almonds (shelled)

    Magnesium in 1 c of shelled whole Almonds (383 mg.) ; in (1/2 Tsp.) = 3.98 mg.

    vs.

Magnesium in 1 c of Pumpkin seeds shelled dried (738 mg.) ; in (1/2 Tsp.) = 7.68 mg.

See two study files: novel sources of antioxidants that inhibit some kinds of seizures.
