Baby super thin, lethargic, not eating

Our little girl here is suuuuper thin, you can feel her spin when you touch her. She had done perfect with formula and pedialyte up until about 2 days ago...I’ve given her calcium and she’s bounced back up until this morning. She lays on her side like she paralyzed. I need help as I’m afraid she won’t bounce back from it this morning, she is a little short of breath. ( I ADDED PICTURE IN REPLY TO THIS THREAD)

What is her story? She is terribly dehydrated. She may also have aspiration pneumonia. Tell us what you have been doing.

We found them when they still had eyes closed (opened a week after I took them in) my husband cuts trees so we’ve acquired many babies. Her brother started out this way, she was hydrated when we got them so I gave her pedialyte for the first day then started milk. She has been perfect until a few days ago. I keep a water dropper bottle in their box so they have pedialyte available 24/7. She is always running back and forth to it, I kept a close eye bc of her brother being so little. I give them esbilac puppy formula powder every 3-4 hours based on their weight and everything. I always feed them by syringe so I don’t think it could’ve ever gotten in her lungs, but it could’ve been possible. She never missed a feeding and was staying hydrated (checked by pinching skin between shoulders) but one morning we got up to feed them and she was lying there almost paralyzed like. When we picked her up she kinda flopped around and we thought one of our bigger squirrels (3 weeks older than baby girl) had maybe been too rough with her over the pedialyte. I immediately thought MBD so I crushed tums and gave her that and more ped. She was up and moving around within 10mins. She is so very skinny and I feel like I’ve done something wrong (obvi) I hope I can save little girl. She is in a separate box getting pedialyte ever 30mins to 1hr and on a heating pad. Anything you guys can tell me I would appreciate it.

Pedialyte shouldn't be given over 24 hrs.
I would definitely look for ab's asap! Baytril animal med or Cipro human med even Augmention.
Let us know what ab's you can find and we can tell you if it can be used and how to dose.
You would likely only need one pill.
Subq would be ideal if you knew how but she's definitely dehydrated and needs hydration.
Here is recipe for homemade hydration:

Re-hydration fluid:
1 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 quart water.
************
1/2 measure:
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 tablespoon sugar (3-teaspoons)
16 oz water (1-pint)
*************
1/4 measure:
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 tablespoon sugar (1-1/2 teaspoons)
8 oz water

We have cows & horses so we have penicillin for them always on hand....would a small subq of that help? And I will make your rehydration mixture asap, I will try to find some type of antibiotic and see if I can give that to her...my mil may have some. Thanks

Let’s start on doxy but please try and find Baytril/Cipro or Clavamox/augmentin. I will send dosing but this girl did not get to looking like this overnight . Let’s try and figure out what is wrong.

I want you to change formula to 3 parts goats milk, 1 part heavy whipping creme, 1 part full fat yogurt. I am very concerned that the Esbilac is not giving your baby enough nutrients and she has been slowly starving to death.


You must hydrate with doxy.
I need a weight on your baby and the strength of the doxy.

Have they had pedialyte available since you have had them. As step said, pedialyte only for hydrating first three days.

Do you weigh them daily? Like I said this did not happen overnight. Some times Esbilac will not work for a particular squirrel and it will slowly starve to death. Put some molasses on her gums. Start her on the GMF that I mentioned in an earlier thread. She looks in very bad shape.

Thank you all but she passed after I got the meds, I feel so bad that I couldn’t get her the right nutrients, thank you all for your help, we have 3 that will be released here in a few weeks so I am tending to them now, thank you all again.

The brother is actually doing great! He started out really tiny, we called him lil’ bit. But he has grown so much and not too far behind the older two. I will get some pics of all 3 tomorrow. Should I leave plain water in their box for them, or the rehydration mixture?

If they drink on their own I'd leave plain water.
