Question Closed eyes, going on week 7

    Hello,
So I was honored by our neighborhood to care for this baby squirrel that was found at the park on the ground. I have rehabilitated 2 squirrels in my lifetime so its not my first rodeo. Anyway, based on looks and developmental characteristics I would say he was about 4-5 weeks old. We had him now for 2 weeks. He is developing really well and very rambunctious little guy. His stools and general elemination is good and his senses are off charts. But what worries me is that his eyes are still not open. I took advice from our local wild life rehab and started to do warm compressions on his eyes with a cotton ball. So far no luck but his eye slit is starting to extract some tears. It does not look infected but once in a while I catch him rubbing his face against the ground ( kinda like the dog does when his butt itches) but he does it with its head being tilted so his eye gets the rubbing part. Not sure what to make if it. Otherwise it don’t seam to bother him much. Super happy and frisky any one has any thought? Could he just be a late bloomer?

We are from Southern California so I am assuming he is a Western Gray Squirrel. He weighs 7.8oz. It didn’t let me load more than one pic.... here is another one...
