Can you post a pic of the wound and tell us how the wound came about? --in the mean time clean it with Betadine then apply some Neosporin over it.

If using betadine, be sure to dilute it with water until it is the color of weak tea.

he ate a hole in the towel i had in his cage with him and the got his leg wrapped in it and it cut the circulation off. i cut him out as soon as i found it obviously and his foot was swollen for about a week. now the swelling is down and it's basicslly just an open wound on his leg now. i'm afraid of infection setting in but i do know that it is not gangrene. it has been about 2-3 weeks since the incident and i've been keeping it clean and recently started putting tea tree creme on it since i've heard that tea tree helps a lot with infections.

YIKES NO to tea tree anything.
I'm assuming the cream is the same as oil, and
it's toxic to squirrels. Let me find the links.

Get rid of the towels, but in fleece or things that will not
catch his nails. Can you post a picture?

Well of course I can't find the links now.
We had a member use the tea tree oil on one of
their squirrels and seizures and drooling were reported
    after.
Here's something I found about the oil.
As I've said not sure if the same goes for the cream, but
    I wouldn't risk it.

    Poisonous to: Cats, Dogs

Level of toxicity: Generally moderate to severe, life-threatening

    Common signs to watch for:

    Low body temperature
    Weakness
    Walking drunk
    Inability to walk,
    Tremors
    Coma
    Increased liver enzymes
    Death

Tea tree oil has been used as a "natural" remedy for a long time, especially for skin afflictions. There is some scientific evidence that tea tree oil can be effective for certain skin conditions. It is poisonous if swallowed and so should not be used in or around the mouth at all.

A member here by the user name of stosh2010 used it on one of his squirrels, and he has
    never been the same.
It's toxic to cats and dogs, so I would assume to squirrels as well.
We DO have posts about it here, just not able to find at the moment.

Some have used silvadene cream (Rx) or neosporin/polysporin. Derma gel (online) works well as a liquid covering that promotes healing.
