    Default constipated pinky

I found a tiny pinky brown tree squirrel in my yard a week ago Tues. She was probably about 5 days old. I researched and researched some more and have talked to 2 different rehabbers. It;s all so confusing because everyone says something different. I started her on Esbilac liquid as powder was not readily available in my area. She kept having diarrhea and one rehabber suggested I give her pedialyte for several feedings, then start back with diluted formula. Did that but diarrhea persisted so she told me to change to a goat milk recipe of 3/4 c water, pkg of knox gelatin, 2 scoops milk powder, then add couple drops of cream to each feeding. She started doing good. More solid mustard colored poop. Gaining 1 gram a day. I was worried she might not be getting enough nutrients because most that I've read says goat milk doesn't have enough nourishment, so I tried adding a minute pinch of baby cereal at each feeding. Did pretty well for a couple of days, but sometimes she'd hardly poop, sometimes she'd go good. I was still worried se wasn't getting enough nutrients and saw a recipe another rehabber had. Started giving her a mixture of 3/4 goats milk, pkg knox gelatin, part of an organic free range egg yolk, 3/4 tsp raw honey and added 2 drops heavy cream to each feed. Supposed to add collostrum powder but have not been able to get yet. I stopped cereal with this mixture. Pooping was good. Decided to try cereal again at last feeding of the night,so I gave her less. Bad idea! Then she didn't poop for over 8 hours. I stopped cereal. Have done everything I know to get her to go, but am at a loss. She now weighs 23 grams as of this morning. Feeding 1.2 cc every 3 hrs during day and 2 feedings at night 4 hrs apart. Please help us!

First, thank you for helping her! im a little confused about what you are feeding her now. The formula we recommend is powdered Esbilac. It is availanle at petsmart, Petco and also on amazon. If needed for short term, the goats milk formula we recommend is 3 parts goats milk, 1 part full fat yogurt (no fake sweeteners added) and 1 part heavy cream. I usually use it without the cream for a few days and add it a little at a time. Additional fluids often help move bowels along. Using sugar water might help. One cup warm water and one tablespoon sugar. Make sure everything the eat is very warm.

I would stop the formula you have been using. Gelatin is not something to feed a baby and raw eggs and honey are really not something to feed a baby safely.

To help her move her bowels try warm water bath for only her lower half gently massaging her belly downward. Be sure to have a warm towel or fleece at hand to quickly dry her and keep her warm till completely dry.

Poor baby. Thank you so much for helping her. Possibly, with so many changes in her diet, her little innerds are rebelling. Diarrhea is serious but can be from stress, a change from mama's milk--or if smelly, from coccidia or another intestinal nasty. If smelly, drugs are needed, but for unexplained diarrhea give her maybe 12 hours on diluted Pedialyte or just water if she'll take it, and start with diluted Esbilac--not the liquid kind--it's different, but the powdered kind with probiotics like SM said. Start with the formula pretty well diluted and work toward the recommended dilution over a 24 hour period. Feed her small amounts frequently and keep her and the formula warm when feeding. Lots of rehab folks have lots of home remedies but with teeny tinies, less is more. Adding extras can cause more problems than they cure. Gotta go slow and give those little bodies time to adjust. Otherwise their little systems shut down. For constipation, make sure you give her LOTS of fluids. Maybe a tiny bit of apple juice in water but mostly water, water, water. The warm water soak can help too. Good luck with your sweetie.

Thanks for all the input and info. A drop of mineral oil did the trick. We are back on track.
