    Default Found baby squirrel.

    Hi,
I found a baby squirrel two days ago while walking my dogs. Her eyes are still closed. She is healthy and not injured in any way. Waited to find the mother but took her once it got dark, was afraid another animal would get her.

We are feeding her puppy formula with a syringe, also tried an eye dropper but just read in your forum that I shouldn't use that.

She eats well and then curls up to sleep. I am trying to help her go to the bathroom, any help you could give me with that? We are keeping her warm, in a box, with a heating lamp close by, but not too close (we have other animals, and have cared for baby squirrels before, but this one seems younger).

any other advice you can give on how to care and do's and don'ts is greatly appreciated.

Here are some pictures. CAn you tell me the age?Name: IMG_0844.JPG

Thank you for helping this baby. and to TSB.
What kind of puppy formula are you feeding her? You really NEED Esbilac Puppy Formula (the powdered version, not the liquid… weird, but they are very different).

You can use your finger, a cotton ball or even a piece of tissue to stimulate her to go pottie. If she is hydrated (if you pinch the skin on her neck and it snaps back down, she is hydrated.. if the skin stays tented and goes down more slowly she needs some water / hydration solution (let us know)). Sometimes it may take up to 24 hours (even longer) for them to poo when transitioning from mommy's milk to formula. The poo will go from dark brown to a mustard or golden color (with the Esbilac, a lot of other formulas will cause diarrhea and do not have the right nutrients for a squirrel).

It is much preferred to use a heating pad, on medium underneath ½ a plastic bin that the baby is in (with fleece, flannel or t-shirt materiel (no towels)). Only under half the bin so she can crawl off the heat if she gets too warm. Cardboard boxes tend to dry them out.

She looks to be about 4 weeks old (and very cute!).

DO use the syringe, a small one (1ML)... and nipples help.
    DO NOT use a dropper.
DO NOT keep her around your dog, keep them separate. Getting her friendly with a dog (or cat, etc.)
will be a death sentence for her. She needs have a natural fear of dogs/cats etc.

Here is the formula you need. The chain pet stores and Tractor Supply usually carry it. If the "with probiotics" banner is missing confirm that the third ingredient is "dried whey protein concentrate". There was an older formulation, but I think maybe those should be all gone by now.
