    Default Teeth trimming questions

I live in DeLand central Florida. I have an 8yrs old grey squirrel Hammy. We were wondering do you take your squirrel to the vet to have its teeth cut or do you do it? If you go to the vet how much do they charge you? I have never trimmed her teeth. She has plenty to chew on. I still feel her bottom teeth are too long. I called the vet that I took my flying squirrel to have his eye removed from a bad Cherry eye situation. They charged $180-ish. For the trim of the teeth was $230 plus $50 for being first visit. I felt 230 was kind of high. I'm not super rich and will save up the money if needed or maybe someone is willing to help trim. Thanks for any input.

That is very high. You might want to give a call to Dr. Emerson up in your area. Give a call and get prices first, but she is the tooth expert!

Thank you. I will give her a call. I i'm not sure what is considered too long for the bottom teeth.

I'm going to repost some things that were on my thread... "Sqyrl's Thought's" in Off-Topic discussions on my page #16 Post #304-311

    Sqyrl,
You are the man to ask about cutting tools! Some members here need to regularly trim squirrel teeth. We have always recommended using diagonal cutters with some form of hardened tool steel blades. Some of the cheaper cutters will lose their edge and can cause tooth splitting which can be dangerous. I don't have much faith in stuff made in China.

Here is an example of what I think is probably a decent trimmer:

Do you have any recommendations/suggestions? Thanks.

I have been giving this more thought about usage and how the cutters actually work and think your suggestion of the Klein "micro diagonal cutter" might be a good one though more expensive than what I suggested. I would like to actually see both cutting edges up close to see how sharp of an angle they have. Most diagonal cutters are angled inward at maybe 30 degrees, but the actual cutting edge is maybe 90 degrees. This works well with metal rods or thinner wires and the cutting edge pinches the metal and moves it sideways till the edges gets close and the metal pops apart or is cut apart. The 90 degree actual cutting edge doesn't wear out as fast as a sharper angle would. This may not work well on teeth and the cutting edge may act to CRUSH the tooth until the cutting edges meet and then perform the cut off. I suggest using something with a sharp actual cutting edge and I can't be sure of your suggested Micro Cutters, but the one I suggest seems to have a sharp cutting edge. Another tool to consider might be some type of heavy duty toenail clipper that has plier type handles.
In case this auction ends before more people see it, the Klein model number is D275-5. For those unfamiliar with the Klein name, they've been making linesman and electrician tools since 1857. I have maybe 5 or 6 Klein tools and they are good USA Tools. I can't say for sure if all their tools are still USA made since it seems everyone is having stuff made in China now, but the ones I have are USA made.

Some other brands may call these "Flush Cut" and may be listed that way.

It's hard to tell but they might be a little too long. They actually look quite good to me.

Hammy for 8 years old and you are literally 26 miles (35min) from one of the best squirrel teeth vets in the country. There is no doubt in my mind what you should do. I would take Hammy to see Dr. Emerson in Port Orange. She is a rehabber herself and is extremely nice. You will not regret it. Hammy is at the age where it would be great to have an established relationship with a vet for any future issues that might arise. You are SO lucky to be that close to her.

    The Peace of Wild Things
    BY WENDELL BERRY
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
