Photo update: We got some okay ones today, and I can't decide how I feel about his top teeth :/ I guess I should be happy that they're growing in and not still tiny little nubs, but I don't like the direction they are growing in. His swelling and infection look way better, the white in his mouth is just the formula we had to bribe him with so we could take the photos. Let me know what you guys think!

Yes, that is what I noticed, too-it looks like his right one is significantly longer than his left. I feel like the fact that they are growing in so fast makes him even more of a mystery case! I'm thinking it will be trim time for those bottoms in a couple of days, even though his first trim was just a week ago. We'll see what the others say...

So, Newton isn't doing so well. I've been waiting for more responses before trimming his teeth again, even though tomorrow will only mark two weeks. He won't go near his rodent block (any brand, no matter what I soak it in or coat it with), so I've been slowly decreasing his other solid foods in an attempt to get him to at least nibble them. He's still being fed formula 3x a day, and his poops are still solid, and he's still on his antibiotic, but his poops are almost totally white in color, which I assume has something to do with the fact that we are feeding him way too much formula for a squirrel his age. I know he has some weird circumstances because of his teeth issues, but Kelvin was totally weaned by this point, and chowing down on almost anything we would give him.

I'm not really sure what to do, because I'm not even sure he CAN eat his blocks without me soaking them first, since we are still not really sure what's up with his teeth. We're going to trim his bottoms slightly once my husband gets home, but I wonder if we should be tapering him off of the antibiotic, and reducing his formula feedings to twice a day. If anyone has any input, I would really appreciate it!

Try grinding the block and mixing it with enough almond or peanut butter so that it will stick together and roll it into little balls. Keep refrigerated. They are the texture of raw cookie dough so he will be able to eat them.

I am concerned with what is going on with his top teeth. It looks in the pics like they angle back toward the throat. Is this true or just the photo?

I tried that already Maybe if we reduce his formula, that will entice him.

Yes, religiously! I'll try to get a better look later to make sure the infection is totally gone. His wheezing has definitely stopped, which is good!

Will do! Probiotic time is our favorite time of day, because Newton gets them on a piece of avocado

I wouldn't be in a big hurry to get Newton off formula. Perhaps some of the more experienced members will weigh in but I think formula will supply him with all the nutrition he needs for the time being. We are praying for him (and you).

I also meant to add that CC's poops were quite light (a light beige color) as he was eating formula almost exclusively.

Do his top teeth project more forward under normal conditions (ie not being handled and when nothing is in his mouth)?

As Nancy stated, at this point you can probably stop the AB.


Both the top and the bottom teeth are nearly ready fit trimming. Be very careful with those top teeth, you don't want a piece of tooth going down his throat.

Okay, bottom teeth are trimmed. We tried and tried to get some decent photos of his top teeth without anything in his mouth, but this was the best we could do. It's looking to me like his top teeth are definitely curving toward his throat ;(

We didn't get anywhere close to trimming the top teeth-we'll save that for tomorrow after everyone sees these photos.

You can BARELY see his top teeth in a few of these, and it looks like even two weeks out from his last trim, his bottom teeth are puncturing his top gums. I've never seen him chew on any of his sticks or antlers in front of me, so I imagine it isn't happening much while I'm not around, either :/



I should also note that that isn't discharge in his mouth, just avocado as part of the peace making process!

UPDATE:

Newton is doing great and not so great at the same time. He still won't have a thing to do with his rodent block, but he is on other solid foods and formula 2x/day now.

We finally got to trim his lower teeth again tonight, and got a great look at his uppers. Photos would have been IMPOSSIBLE, but as you can tell from the previous photos, his upper teeth are growing almost totally parallel to the roof of his mouth. We managed to trim them down a bit, but they are so long, they had started to cross over each other.

We would really like to get him to a vet within driving distance, because I'm starting to think we might be in over our heads. I am really hoping a few more trims of the uppers will help them start growing in correctly, but if not, he probably needs to be seen by someone way more experienced than we are.

Does anyone know of any rehabbers or vets in MO or IL (even Iowa, Kansas, Arkansas...wherever, we just don't want him in a transport crate too long) who may be able to help us? He is happy for now, I'm just nervous about the future
