Default Eye Infection - Poss Blind

I received two sibling squirrels in 5 days ago (5 wks old) and all seemed to be going good until today. I went to feed them and the males left eye was closed together, he had the sniffles and spit up his formula. After I cleaned off his eye it was glazed over and looks as though he is blind in that eye.

Any thoughts? - besides the blinbness, do you think he might need some antibiotics? . JJ weighs 75 grams. His sister Janette is doing fine other than being small in size, which they both are..... which is expected as mom was no longer around when they were found on the ground in some ones back yard, crying for help and food.

Pics coming soon...... I am writing this on my cell. Thanks.

Poor little one. So they were fine and then just today, blinded in the one eye?

That is correct. Could this be an injury or a nutritional problem as well.
Thinking about SMZ for JJ tomorrow if there is no sign of improvement.

I've read just briefly about this in another thread, with no definitive answers... cataract, infection, seizures that may have been related. On the plus side, apparently the infections can clear. There may be reason to hope the same for this one. Here's the thread:

Besides the SMZ..... does any one think I should start the little one on some eye ointment? --and if yes, what kind. Thanks.

I am no expert but you are treating with a systemic AB so I think I would just leave the eye alone and hope it heals. If the eye looks dried out, you could put a little eye drop lubricant on it.

Sorry, R... I'm only the newbie on this one.

    Possible help, read here:

Do you mean polysporin eye drops? Go to your local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for polysposin eye drops or polysopring eye ointments.... same thing but one is thicker.

The pharmacist likely keeps them behind the counter. No need for prescription; just they track the sale of it. Tell them it's for you and you are prone to pink eye so you always like to keep a fresh supply on hand. Something like that. They don't do veterinary....

    Ointment vs drops:
If you get the eye ointment (ointment actually formulated for eyes). But a dab on your clean index and place that one to the eye and force the eyelids open and shut a couple of times to make it spreak.

Drops are easier just don't miss your shot.

Oral abs and eye ointment abs once a day for a couple of days...it will not damage the eye so I would do it.
