Looking for a vet who will treat my squirrel

I found little Kiba last summer at what I guess was 3 weeks old. Almost a year later, he's become my bestest little buddy. I'd like to keep him happy and healthy so I'd like to take him to a vet for shots and maybe to be neutered. However, squirrel pets are illegal. Has anyone found a reasonable vet who is willing to help squirrels?

He's beautiful! I've never seen a black squirrel. I wish i could help. I'm in the states. Jelly is my best little buddy too and he has a vet with a heart of gold. Good luck. <3

Welcome to TSB... Kiba looks like a fine little one.

Generally speaking, squirrels don't get shots, or neutered, even in areas where it's legal to own them.

I agree with what others have said, they don't need shots,
and neutering is never advised unless for some dire medical
emergency.

Kiba is just stunningly beautiful! I am partial to black squirrels myself, as you can see from my avatar. Love his golden flecks in the black fur! The very BEST thing you can do for this gorgeous boy is to make sure his DIET is correct. Health in squirrels depends so much on DIET it's almost the only thing that matters....

Please read it, memorize it, and take the list with you to the grocery store. It will be your insurance that Kiba will stay happy and healthy for many years.

One question, though: have you thought about what you will do if he begins to wild up, and to want the trees more than anything? It is a very hard thing to keep a healthy Eastern Grey Squirrel captive. We can help you eventually set up a soft release plan for him, when the time comes.

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your kind answers! The reason I'm reaching out is because he's reached a point where his testicles are quite large and I feel bad for him lol. He's also starting to try to assert his dominance over my female dog, who in the past he had just ignored. I figured the change in attitude was connected. Otherwise he's very happy and playful.

To keep him happy, as soon as I get home from work I let him out of his cage and he just runs around or sits with me. He has quite a lot of playtime and freedom so I guess that's what keeps him from wanting the wild.

Thank you all for your love answers. I won't tell him about all the compliments because I don't want it going to his head. He's already vain enough!

It's mating/baby season. During this time, the equipment tends to become more... uh... prominent, and then is less so at the end of the season. (hey, we're all adults here)

I've never heard of a squirrel being neutered- doesn't mean it hasn't happened- however as wild animals, I don't know if it would have the "un-wilding" result you're looking for. This is also assuming you could find a vet willing to perform the operation.

Some great info already posted, and for the time being it looks like Kiba is both healthy and happy. Please feel free to continue to post updates and photos.
