There's a young Gray (less than 2 yo if it's from the litter I think it's from) who has begun to greet me when I approach to refill the feeder box. He's one of 5 regular visitors who's familiar with the my appearances and movements. In the past he's "hovered" on the tree above the box while I fill it. I walk and move slow, and talk softly whenever I'm in the yard. In the feeder box I put a mix of small seeds, peanuts, and a few raw whole almonds.
Lately he's begun to approach on an intercept course as I reach a half-way point to the tree after stepping off the back deck. So far I've turned around and gone back into the house, then returned later when he wasn't in sight.
I'm being cautious because I don't want him to climb my leg to get to the cup in my hand. I also don't want him to reach for the cup (or the hand that carries it, lol) while I'm dumping its contents in the 2 boxes about 7 or 8 ft above the ground. I'm not opposed to close proximity and close encounters while they're playing and I'm watering or gardening, but as his focus here is obviously the food I'm carrying to the feeder, I came here for advice. This board helped me immensely a year or so back, when raccoon roundworm killed 2 others.
QUESTION: Should I use extreme caution, or is it probably low-risk that he'd jump on me? He's never chattered or barked at me, nor do any of them. "He" could also be female, but I don't have the expertise to determine that. I don't care if he intercepts me before I get to the box, as long as he doesn't show aggression. So far there's no sign of anything other than he knows the feeding routine, and is comfortable in my presence.
