As to antibiotics, just call your friends. Lost of people have them in their cabinets. Just find what you can and give us the list. Some pet stores sell them for birds, reptiles, and fish without a prescription. Fish Flox and Fish Mox are two common ones.

Thanks, I found that out. We did look it up and it said it wasn't a problem, that is the only reason I called. I will be calling tomorrow to find out for sure and find out what "controlled" means. I will see what my options are and if nothing else there is a wildlife rescue person in the area, he doesn't have a facility but can take care of my guy if needs be. He just usually goes for the high profile animals and ignores the rest. But I'm not going to let anything happen to him, one way or the other. We'll see where the chips fall tomorrow.

Although, I did find out that a friend of mine's dad is an entomologist and wildlife expert . He was able to give me some information and advice. No it is not a cat bite and only normal precautions are necessary, Neosporine is great . So I am relieved and will continue to do what I have been doing.

Will the Fish Flox or Fish Mox have the mixture that I need? I will take a look, thanks.

FF is actually Ciprofloxacin and FM is Amoxicillin. You just have to tell us the strength of what you get and the weight of the sq.

If you think it's not a cat bite (the bacteria in cat saliva is easily fatal to sqs) what would you be wanting to treat with this?

As to rehabbers, there again you have to be careful. If that guy isn;t into sqs and sees them as not worth his time, he might put him down. Many will do that. They just think they're not worth the time or the resources. Rehabbers are great, but not all are created equal. Always be sure what's goingto happen when you walk out the door. Ask if you can get updates, pics, or even visit.

Oh and if you go wit ABs, you'll have to give some yogurt between doses so as to keep the gut flora up. ABs cause tummy upset.

I am thinking about having the antibiotics on hand for when needed and will also have plenty of yogurt. It has been almost 4 days, so I think we are in the clear. I just want to make sure that I am doing everything I can.

Yeah the rehabber is no my favorite guy. He claims to be a non-profit, but I know for a fact that he doesn't have the papers. I tried writing a grant for him . But at least he will just tell me he wont take him, he won't waist the time or money to even euthanize him.

I have also looked up the species

    http://dwrcdc.nr.utah.gov/ucdc/

They don't even show up, so I'm past the point of caring. I will call to make sure, but it doesn't change anything. He is here and staying here. Thanks for all of the support.

P.S. I found out what controlled means in their paperwork:
"Controlled species" means a species or subspecies of animal that if taken from the wild, introduced into the wild, or held in captivity, poses a possible significant detrimental impact to wild populations, the environment, or human health or safety, and for which a certificate of registration is required.

Then the better one to have around would be FF, or Cipro for humans, or Baytril for animals. All basically the same thing. A good general AB for most things.

Please, please listen to the folks here. They know their squirrels!
Diet is one of the most important things you can do for you're baby, who is just too cute!

And, I'm with the others, be REALLY careful who you trust

Thank you all for all of the wonderful feedback.

Update - I called the Wildlife Resources or what ever they are called here. They have no problem with me having my ground squirrel. They said I only need to register it and even gave me some resources for rehabilitation help, if I need it. Though, I still have an alter-ego now when talking to people. (sorry I got your post about the warning after the fact, but will always remember it now)

I have made a deal with a local farmer for raw goats milk. I have also purchased some Esbilac and acquired a 1cc syringe.

I am not looking into some AB's to have on hand when ever in case I run into any problems. Not much is open here after hours.

I am also, almost done with his new cage (Will post pic when complete for suggestions). I also have enough left over for an outdoor enclosure for this summer, weather permitting.
