    Default Aggression, help!

So a few months ago I posted on here about our 9month old black squirrel having good aggression, and we were told to let him be, it's natural.

Anyways, as time has gone by we cannot even go near his cage without him chattering his teeth and jumping at the cage to attack you. We've been attacked to the point blood is drawn badly, and had to put a towel over him to just get his food in.

My mom is too concerned for his well being to release him, but if we cannot find a way to solve this problem it is our only option. (We've raised him since he was a pinky baby)

    Anything helps, thanks!!

Sounds like he's wilding up. Have you cleaned out any food stashes, though? Those can make him pretty aggressive.

Congratulations! You have raised a healthy squirrel who is ready for a soft release process. Do you live somewhere that is a safe place to release?

I suspect that you are worried unnecessarily. He is more likely going to be very happy to have his freedom and won't feel compelled to attack people.

I agree with SammysMom ...once he is free and in the wild he'll either calm down and become a friendly yard squirrel or he'll take off and be a "wild squirrel" ....in the cage he feels trapped...and he probably is protecting some sort of stash....everything is magnified in the cage...in the open he'll have the opportunity to flee

    The Peace of Wild Things
    BY WENDELL BERRY
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

It would involve him being in a very sturdy, safe cage for several weeks with minimal contact with you. Fedding and giving water only while he grows accustomed to the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

He does sound like he's wilding up. Is he OK away from the cage? Have you tried moving the cage to a new location? Different cage?

If you cannot handle him then there is no choice but to
release him. He is telling you what he wants.

Many times I have had squirrels that I've over wintered
to release in the spring that have become just like your
boy in behavior. I have suffered quit a few nasty bites
myself. But after a soft release into the trees many of
the meanest would come back to take nuts from me with
beautiful manners. No biting or scratching. I have yet
to be attacked by a squirrel I have released. If anything
they come back to me very loving...I truly believe they
tell me thank you for their freedom.

When you see them go up the tree and how happy they
are your tears of sadness at letting them go become tears
of happiness at seeing their joy at being where they belong.

I'm truly sorry I know you love him but for his and your
safety it's time to send him back to the trees.
