    Default Tooth split below gum

When we trimmed Nutso's teeth last night a little piece broke off below the gumline. I knew this was possible, but was hoping it would never happen. She is playing and acting normal (playing tag, getting love, running on her wheel, etc.), except that she would rather not eat anything but her formula (I'm guessing because her mouth is tender). There is no swelling, and if I hadn't seen a little blood and checked the piece of tooth, I wouldn't know there was a problem (perfectly even teeth in her mouth trimmed exactly where they should be, etc.).

My question is: "Should I give her antibiotics or just watch her closely to make sure she eats something more solid soon?" And, if yes, what kind and what dosage? I have a vet I can go to, if that is needed. I don't want to jump the gun, and will absolutely take her if I should.

She is 7 months old and she has had too many tooth trims to count. She isn't truly weaned (was getting formula once a day), so having milk more often would probably be just fine with her.

Her bottom teeth grow like weeds, so I'm guessing we'll be trimming them again next week, but I want to make sure I do everything that is needed to make sure she doesn't get an infection or have any problems.

And, since I know you'll ask if I don't tell - yes, she was getting the right nutrition based on all squirrel board standards--until last night--I promise (you all teach us well). She has a great salad, some HHB, and some squishy fruit right now in her cage for when she is feeling better. Should I add peanut butter or something else squishy? Or, just keep with the formula?

Thank you. It's so nice to have a place to go and get answers. What did people do PSB (Pre Squirrel Board)?

Was this a top or bottom that splintered???

Hold off on the abs. Watch for redness or swelling
    of the gums.

The vet who removed my Farrah's top teeth has me
using Baytril for tooth problems and stacking it with
    injectable penicillin if needed.

Thank you. The split is a bottom tooth up at the gum at the back side of the tooth. She can trim her top teeth naturally. Her bottoms just don't wear down without trimming.

I agree, hold off the AB's until you see any swelling or redness. Squirrel teeth are pretty resilient. They should straighten out themselves, but you will need to keep an eye on them.

to both of you for your responses. Nutso isn't eating everything yet, but I caught her removing bark from a branch a few minutes ago so I think she is just enjoying the extra formula. She is acting fine and is letting me touch her mouth without any problem.

I appreciate your response and fingers are crossed we'll never have a scare like this again.
