Hello All,
I wanted to share a situation with my 7 year old female squirrel Stuart (at the time I named her, I did not know it was female). Almost 4 weeks ago she suffered a complete radial fracture of the humerus in her right arm. The right arm was hanging uselessly at her side. 2 vets suggested amputation at the shoulder. I opted to have her arm casted while I tried to explore other options, but no orthopedic surgeon was willing to examine her. There were no signs of movement in her paw until about 10 days later when she demonstrated movement of her fingers.
Last week, just a day before surgery, Stuart had somehow got out of her cast. To my amazement, she demonstrated limited use of her right arm, including grooming her face and grasping her right hind quarter. I immediately cancelled the surgery so I could see how she progressed.
At this time, she has used her arm to eat and groom. and has shown the ability to bear some weight on it. She also demonstrated at least 3 times a full outstretch of the arm while laying on her stomach.
She has not been re-examined yet. I share this so others may use this information. I will update her progress in a few weeks.
