My husband and I took over the care of a baby rock squirrel from a local wildlife rehabber in June of this year. Her name is Dizzy and she has a slight neurologic issue that kept her from being released. She has been very healthy since she came into our care, but the last week or so she started having loose stools/diarrhea of varying degrees. We cut back on fruits, veggies and treats, leaving her mainly with Henry's Healthy & Picky Blocks. We saw a little improvement with the diet change (for about a day), but now we are back to the mushy poop piles with no form. The color and make-up of the stool isn't all that abnormal - kind of looks like regular squirrel poops that just got mixed with water.
We had a fox squirrel for many years, and it broke our hearts when we lost her to a recurring odontoma this summer. The Squirrel Board has provided a wealth of information throughout her lifetime. I was hoping someone could help me with a dosage, frequency and duration for a course of metronidazole. I have been a veterinary technician for 20 years, but mainly work with dogs and cats. I will be submitting Dizzy's stool for a ova/parasite screening tomorrow, and I have a doctor in the area that is willing and able to see Dizzy, if we don't see some improvement soon.
We thought we'd never have a chance to have a squirrel in the house again. But we were truly blessed by serendipity and ended up with Dizzy! I will say, rock squirrels have proven to be pretty different from the tree squirrels, but we are overjoyed to have her in our lives! Any help would be appreciated.
