Question about one of the groundhogs on our property
First, let me tell you about our local habitat/ecosystem. I live on a small, private drive with 9 houses, surrounded by some woodland, and our backyard terminates on a heavily wooded bluff... with tons of kudzu.
Neighbors are into the barren, pool table style yard, barren foe the most part. Our property is all about the wildlife.
There are 3 female groundhogs, and a couple of males, that come to our property to find food, and for one, shelter.
This season one of the females that showed up is pretty thin. She is either pregnant or nursing, and I’m thinking nursing. But again... she’s thin.
We don’t have much in the way of natural food sources this year due to some rapidly growing Virginia creeper that my husband waited too long to take care of. But the other females look as expected... plump.
I’m not a rehabber, and in the state of Alabama no one seems to care about them. No one. So I’m unsure as to what to do, if anything, about this skinny mom.
Should I be worried? I’ve ordered clover and dandelion seed, but that will take a little bit to grow. Our soil is clay and sand, so it’s not easy to get many native plants to grow here.
I feel helpless at the moment and am hoping someone can shed some light on if this is normal, and if her babies will suffer with weak health if their mom is thin and not producing enough milk.
