I'm nervous here......Sorry to jump-in.....
weight of 1.13 lb might equal 18.1 oz (513 grams)
OR
weight of 1 lb, 13 oz which equals 29 oz (823 grams)
I have a digital scale here that has different modes; in pounds w/ decimals like 1.xx, in pounds & oz like 1 lb 13 oz, and also in grams.
If this weight has been resolved, please disregard my comment.
To: BRH, If needed, I can send you Amox-Clav AB by Priority Mail.
Sam and All, Disregard my Veraflox dosage comment above as its NOT BID but ONCE per day. (memory lapse error on my part)

Hello BedheadRed:
The weight of 1.13 lbs and 1 lb, 13 oz is completely different!!! This is the weight issue I have been trying to get you to clarify before any medication was given to Biggie! You stated in a prior post that Biggie weighed 1 pound, 13 ounces. You then stated his weight as 1.13 pounds. These are NOT equal!!! If your scale read 1.13 lbs, this is 1 pound plus 0.13 pounds. 0.13 pounds is equal to approximately 2 OUNCES. IF you scale reads in Pounds AND Ounces and you read 1 POUND plus there was an additional reading next to that and it 13 followed by OUNCES; that would be 1lb, 13 oz. IF you set the scale on Pounds and it read simply 1.13 Pounds and no specific ounce reading this is 1.13 Pounds or 1 Pound, 2 Ounces. The dosing given to you stated specifically that this was for a Squirrel weighing 1 Pound, 13 Ounces NOT 1.13 Pounds!
I made this a point in my Dosing Instruction to you for Biggie to also call this issue view; "Instructions for Dosing Veraflox 25mg/1ml Suspension for Biggie; a Squirrel weighing 1#, 13oz (1.8 Pounds)"
IF Biggie's actually weight 1.13 Pounds and not 1 pound, 13 ounces; you are going to be be delivering an OVERDOSE of the Medication to Biggie.
Based upon the dosing regimen that was used for your other Squirrel which was 0.11ml per pound (2.75mg/pound); a 1 pound, 13 ounce Squirrel would weigh 1.8 Pounds (I wrote this specifically on your dosing instructions because Biggie's weight was not clearly expressed!!!) and a 1.8 pound Squirrel would receive 0.2ml (1.8x0.11=0.2)! Following that same protocol of 0.11ml/pound which is the same as 2.75mg/pound; a 1.13 Pound Squirrel should receive only 0.14ml of Veraflox (1.3x0.11=0.14)!!
***Please do NOT give Biggie any of the medication until you clarify his weight and specify what the display on your scale!!!
***Even better than this; please post a photo of the digital reading you see on the scale!
***Utilizing an accurate weight is critical and is of the utmost importance, BedheadRed!
***If you give a 1.13 Pound Squirrel the 0.2ml of the Veraflox that was calculated for 1 pound, 13 ounce Squirrel; that Squirrel will be getting 4.4mg per pound instead of 2.75mg/pound! This is far more of the Veraflox per pound than what your Vet utilized originally and what we agreed upon would be Biggie's dosing protocol and would even be 1mg/pound more than the dosing for Cats!!! Again, Biggie's weight MUST BE CLARIFIED AND BE ACCURATELY STATED!!!! His life may be in danger if that high dosing is continued. From review of some Rat derived data evaluating toxicity of Veraflox, IF you have already administered a higher dose to Biggie than he should actually have received; I do NOT believe that any harm will result BUT this should NOT continue!

Hello again BedHeadRed:
I have been doing a little research about digital scales and their potential formats for readouts and while a scale that reads simultaneously in Pounds plus expresses fractions of an additional pound as Ounces may exist; I cannot find one on my search! What I have located are digital scales that weigh in Pounds and anything over a whole pound is expressed as a decimal fraction of a pound and NOT in ounces! What I suspect now is that you set your scale to read in pounds and the reading of 1.13 is 1 pound plus 0.13 (or 13 hundredths) of another pound and NOT 13 Ounces. Thirteen HUNDREDTHS of a Pounds is NOT 13 ounces; it is 2 OUNCES!!! This is because there are 16 ounces in a pound so to find out what 0.13 of a pound is in ounces we would multiple 16 by 0.13 which would be 2 OUNCES!
On a related note, I, as do most everyone working in the sciences (and Rehabbing and Veterinary Medicine are certainly well withing the realm of science) utilize ONLY the Metric System for weights which is a Decimal System. A digital scale reading in Metric Units would give readings in Grams or Kilograms. Utilizing the these units is very simple and provide digital readouts that are far easier to to understand than a digital readout based upon the US system of weights! Using the US System of measuring weight in Pounds will give a readout in pounds and anything over a whole pound will be expressed as a decimal fraction of a pound but this is NOT the same as ounces!
On the other paw; digital fractions of Kilograms seen on a digital scale set to read Kilograms are actually Grams with each Gram being exactly 0ne thousandth of a Kilogram! Just as an example; if we had a digital scale set to read in Kilograms and we saw the number 2.250 on the display; this would be extremely easy to understand as this particular number would indicate a weight of 2 Kilograms plus 250 Grams! This is because the Metric System is a decimal system and as such; the units have a decimal relationship with each other! There are 1000 Grams in 1 Kilogram (the prefix Kilo means 1000 in the Metric System) which makes interpreting the reading of a whole number along with a decimal number in the Metric System very easy!!
BHR; the following is what I would strongly suggest that you do;
1) please STOP any further dosing of Veraflox to Biggie IMMEDIATELY
2) Reweigh Biggie with your digital scale set to KILOGRAMS and make an accurate note of the reading you see in the display. Then, just for verification by another person familiar with both the Metric System and digital scales; please POST a PHOTO the the on this Thread of your Scale's Display of Biggie's Metric weight and showing actual units (such as Kilograms) that you have set the scale to utilize!
3) I will look at this or someone familiar with interpreting Metric Weights utilizing Digital Scales will review this for your so we can all be certain of Biggie's weight BEFORE you resume dosing of the Veraflox!
4) Biggie's Dosing instructions will need to be RECOMPUTED based upon the new accurate weight expressed in Kilograms and Grams rather than pounds and ounces or fractions of pounds! This is very important! Once we get a definitive weight in Kilograms/Grams; I will gladly resubmit revised dosing instructions to you ASAP!! Most of us who provide any sort of medical care to animals or humans utilize the Metric System for weights and measures and all of us do in active rehabbing (or health care in general) utilize the Metric System multiple times throughout an average day and are very experienced with weighing animals and providing appropriate dosing of medications and we will help you get all of the issues expeditiously resolved TODAY so you can get Biggie back on his medication with the knowledge that the drug is being administered according to his true and accurate weight!

Hello BedheadRed:
The more I think about this the more I become concerned! My digital scale when set to Kilograms will always read 3 places to the right of the decimal point because it was setup that way BUT for better accuracy in determining Biggie's actual and accurate weight; rather than set the units of your scale in Kilograms as I suggested above; set it to read in GRAMS!
I also sent this post directly to BedHeadRed by PM! IF any ADMIN might know how to get in touch directly with BHR; that would greatly be appreciated!!

Since the abscess is growing and thus its pain is increasing, I would pick-up some INFANTS Ibuprofen in berry flavor at pharmacy. We can give you dosing when you have it.
Got your PM and will mail out AB on Monday. Please make sure you have 1ml syringe for AB mixing and dosing.
Weight mystery solved. 822 grams.

Does anyone know of something i can rig up to puncture this thing when/if i need to?
Dermablade (eyebrow razor) i can take apart...exacto knife? What are the recommendations?
Its filling up very slowly.. ? Wth
Hi BHR,
Oh, I was hoping per your comment #27 above, you got this covered ??
Here is my rough idea:
Need extra person to hold squirrel still and firm. Best to wrap squirrel like a burrito for control.
Use new (very sharp) X-Acto craft knife blade taped over with only 1/16 inch tip exposed held between thumb and finger with ONLY tip exposed. Make a gentle puncture on abscess. Most important is a shallow puncture.
Key to doing this procedure is having the abscess ready. Read CritterMom comment #24 above on if the skin is thin and transparent to see pus. I know there are a few YouTube videos. Make sure squirrel is held tight to prevent any injury.
Mr.SSG
PS: Priority Mail with AB in transit to you (just checked tracking) ETA is late this week.

Tyvm! Great idea with the tape!!! That was my concern about what i have/ can get as a lance.
I was worried about puncture depth. Yes i have reviewed #24CM and i am fairly certain ill know what to look for! Ty all for your support!
Hi BHR,
Mail seems to be travelling slow as I check tracking info. Another check in the morning.
You indicated that abscess is increasing. Did you get any Ibuprofen ??
Does abscess look ready for draining ?? I'm concerned if abscess get too big to clean out effectively.
Right now you have Veraflox AB and looks like Saturday is delivery of Amox/Clav AB.
Mr. Biggie must be in some pain.
Mr.SSG
Hello Again BHR,
Good News! USPS Tracking indicates the package is out for delivery this morning.
I just sent you PM with dosing instruction for Amox-Clav AB. Hope Biggie is doing okay.
What have you decided on the abscess ??
Mr.SSG
I need to know about pain relief. Would gabapentin help? They gave other squirrel liquid for pain. Are there any other alternatives? I will lance tomorrow at the earliest...waiting for paycheck to gather supplies ...hopefully will be here tomorrow if not Friday am. I hope.
Really no need for prescription level pain reliever. Pickup small bottle of Infants Ibuprofen (50mg/1.25ml) in berry flavor. Any brand works from CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc...) I will send you dosing info by PM.
Frankly, Biggie feels more pain now having the abscess as skin is being stretched by infection pus. When you lanced it, some pus will come out relieving the pressure and thus decrease the pain. Of course, there will be some minor pain as you massage the abscess to get more pus out. Flush abscess with slightly warm saline solution. Just having abscess open is big pain relief! The key to success is having a very sharp scalpel or Xacto blade to lance abscess so Biggie does not feel it. Don't go deep.
For Probiotics, some people use Bene-Bac from pet store. It's okay to pick up some general everyday probiotic capsules at pharmacy (you only need a few capsules). You can open a capsule, take a pinch and give in water with syringe or on food. Remember to wait 2 hours after each AB dose to give the probiotic.
Looking forward to your updates! Thank you for helping Biggie.
Mr.SSG
PS: USPS Tracking indicates package was delivered.
Ibuprofen dosing sent by PM.
Is there any way to post a picture of abscess now before I&D ??
Curious how you are making out with Biggie ??
