Exclamation Need Help rehoming friendly 6 year old eastern grey squirrel

    Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out because I’m in a very difficult position and need help. I know it is extremely hard to rehome older squirrels, and this is not something I ever expected to be doing. Unfortunately, I am moving and will not be able to bring my squirrel with me. I’m trying to explore every safe and humane option because I absolutely do not want him to be put down, and he cannot be released.

He is 6 years old and has been handled since around 5 weeks old. He has been loved and well-cared for his whole life, and my priority is finding a safe and stable placement where he can live out the rest of his life. I understand what a big responsibility this is, and I am open to sanctuaries or experienced caregivers who are familiar with non-release squirrels.

If anyone has advice, sanctuary recommendations, or might be able to help — even just pointing me in the right direction — I would be incredibly grateful. This is truly heartbreaking for me, and I just want to make sure he goes somewhere safe and caring.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any guidance or support you can offer.

    oliviabakker,

First, I'm not a Rehabber and live in a state (CA) that is very strict on license and pet squirrels.

Next, I would suggest you detail more information about your squirrel and reason for non-release. Also, information health, any past issues, etc. Maybe post a recent picture too. What is your rehoming timeframe ? Is cage included or not ??

Good Luck and Hoping for a positive outcome!
