Exclamation 2 Babies 3-4 weeks old. I think one needs antibiotics

Late Saturday evening, I found 2x 3-4 week old (furry but eyes closed and have bottom teeth) squirrels. I gave them molasses water and heating pad box like I saw in instructions. The female weighs 55g and the male is 61g. I gave them molasses water for about 24 hrs then they both ate some yogurt/cream/egg yolk food last night and this morning.

Both were covered in fly eggs. I combed them out with lice combs then ordered Fox 20/50 and Capstar, which arrived today.

This evening I noticed the male is making noises that make me suspicious he needs antibiotics for pneumonia, based on what I have read on here. I tried to check the breathing video post, but the link is broken so I am not entirely sure. The male was eating well but this evening he is making those noises and not eating. The female has not been eating as well as the male. They were found by a friend's dog, who was trying to play with one of them,

I txted multiple rehab places near me, but they either are at capacity or did not get back with me.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Do these poor babies have a chance?

Yes, but you need to work fast. Start with AB.

    1) Give me pill ID (numbers/letters on both side of pill)

    2) 875mg-125mg Amox/Clav should have 1/2 pill cut line ??

    3) Do you see any live maggots ??

I have not seen any maggots, only eggs. After combing out as many as I could, I have been checking them all over and rubbing off any I could find. This morning I finally got the rest of the eggs off them, since they seemed a little more energetic. They both ate this morning and then neither wanted to eat much the rest of the day.

I did get hold of the miracle nipple and an o-ring syringe this evening, though. The female ate much better off the nipple and she got about 2mL down before she wouldn't eat anymore. She has not been sneezing or anything like the male.

I picked up the Capstar on Amazon. It is 11.4mg tablets for dogs.

Since you have not return and its late on East Coast, the morning crew may pick this case up hours before me.

    Maggots:

You have Capstar; pill should be 11.4mg. Crush 1/4 pill into powder, mix with a little water, and give orally to one baby. Repeat with other baby. Crush remaining 1/2 pill into powder, add 6 ml of water, and apply 3ml to each baby topically at problem areas like ears, anus, private parts, any wounds. Keep cleaning off eggs and any live maggots.

East Coast TSB will help with amox/clav AB dosing in morning.

Thank you for the Capstar information. Should I give that at a different time than the antibiotics?

    With or without food?

    Perfect, X32 = 875/125 Amox/Clav. with cut line.

I will send you diluting and docing instruction by PM.

For now, cut pill on 1/2 cut line with sharp knife. Be careful cutting.

Next, take 1/2 pill and crush into powder in a small container with a lid.

Give me a minute to work-up your PM.

Since you don't see any LIVE maggots go with AB first. Give Capstar a few hours after AB with small water since it oral. Next double check all areas on babies for any maggots. If you feel like babies are clean, you could skip the topical application.

Keep babies warm and hydrated. Monitor them during the night.

Got them both with the correct dosage without issue. I will do the Capstar after a nap

Thanks for the help. I hope they make it!

Sadly, I lost the male when I checked on them for the morning feeding. The female ate for me today and then my wife found her passed when she got home a few hours later. Between the two of them and regular life, I was VERY busy today and unable toi take the time to sit down and respond. I was hoping to have better news this evening after the female seemed to be eating well and active.

Does anyone have a need for any of my supplies? If not, I can contact my closest rehab and donate the Fox 20/50 and Capstar, at least.

Sad news indeed but as said, being that young with complication is so difficult to rescue from the edge. You did all you could fight the fly eggs and breathing issues. Thank for giving it your best. It just was not meant to be. (Thank you to wife too!)

Young pinkies are so fragile and having problems just make it so hard. Rest in Peace little ones!
