I rescued a momma last week, but it was too late by the time I got her. Momma passed away an hour later. I got to thinking about babies, and I went out with a flashlight, looked at them, and listened, but nothing came out. I got up the next day and went out to look around still nothing so I went back inside. At about 6 pm two days after the mommy squirrel passed, my husband called me to come outside and said he heard a squirrel screaming. My sister heard the screams too and beat me to the tree it was coming from and we both stood there calling up the tree trying to see something. I looked over at my husband where he was working on my Yukon and back to the tree as a baby appeared, my sister and I began to call to the baby softly trying to coax him down. She was there at the tree and I was a few feet away. The baby was looking at us but not moving, so I stepped in closer to the tree and was calling in a small voice "Come on little baby it's ok, come on baby." Never in a million years did I ever see something so sweet as that baby come down the tree and into my sister's hand. She said, "awe, I want to go show Will", I said, ok. I stayed and called up the tree hoping if there were any more babies maybe they would come down. Nothing happened as I hoped it would. That night we were expecting bad weather, but it didn't come. The next day we heard a baby cry out but could not get it to come down. I wanted to try to find the nest but the tree was really rotten and unstable and I was scared of what could happen so I didn't try. My husband told me after I came inside that he would get a ladder and try the next day, but the storm was coming so it would have to wait. I worried all night about it and was out there the next morning trying to coax it from the tree but I never heard a sound. Around 12:30 my sister came knocking on the door and she had a baby in her hands. I immediately got some Pedialyte into the starving baby. It was 3 days after Mom passed that we got the first baby and 5 before we got the 2nd baby. My sister went into her shed to see what the dogs were doing and they had the baby cornered up. She was wet from dog slobber but unlike the mom, the dogs didn't maw the baby. I say she because I really can't tell for sure because I have nursed two babies before and you could tell no problem they were males and the first squirrel is a male. The second baby is smaller than the first and not as energetic, I was wondering about that if it was normal. She eats very greedily as does the first baby whom I call Spirit and I assume that from being hungry when mom never came back. My husband Chris calls the second baby nutnut, which is a horrible name lol. Both of the babies are so sweet, I fed them pedialyte for about 3 days each and then went out and purchased heavy whipping cream from ingles and then I went to tractor supply to purchase esbilac powder puppy milk replacer, but they didn't have any so I purchased goat milk for sensitive digestive systems, it claims to be fortified with vitamins and probiotics. 4health is the brand name. Spirit the first baby eats 2 1/2 syringes per feeding sometimes 3, and Fiona the second baby eats 1 1/2 -2 syringes full. Fiona sounds good, maybe I will wait a little longer to name nutnut until I know for sure. My first squirrel I nursed was named Scrat lol, but I called him Boogie because he would boogie through my house like it was nothing.
