Many of the best wild foods for squirrels are fresh buds, etc. from trees. These are much less common in the middle of the summer.

Two wild foods that are readily available from spring through fall are violets (top) and dandelions (bottom).

Beyond not using any pesticides in our yard, I avoid harvesting near the street or sidewalk as well as in the very back portion of the yard where we do get some runoff from neighbors. While nobody appears to be using pesticides, it is best not to take any chances.

In the case of violets, there are (happily) so many in my yard that harvesting the entire plant is not a problem. I deliberately leave some dirt on the roots, as Guro is quite found of this and goes to it first.

With dandelions, I deliberately cut through the root in order to maintain a steady supply in my lawn. This gives Guro some dandelion root to go with leaves, flowers, etc. while leaving enough root in the ground that the dandelion will grow back.

This coming winter, I am going to try growing dandelions (and possibly violets) in a large container in our sunroom to get a fresh supply during the colder months.

Guro turned 3 y.o. yesterday - she has been eating wild foods daily from the time she was first given solid foods -

Black walnuts coming in season now. Guro grabbed this off my desk when out for afternoon play time then promptly carried it back inside her cage.

Is that a black walnut ?? looks green in the picture. Walnuts here are light brown to dark brown. Never seen a green one. Maybe not ripe yet ??

Guro is a real character. Good for him to go get want he wants.

The walnuts people typically eat and buy in stores are English walnuts.

    Black walnuts are different -

Guro is a girl, and yes, she is quite the character!

Guro went into a territorial phase with no more cuddling when she was about a year old in July 2023, which eventually passed with her back to being more sweet and climbing on me. Same thing three straight summers now. I figure it is related to mating season, but for some reason there has not been a corresponding behavior shift during winter mating season.

Anyways, Guro is still in that phase now, so when she got the black walnut she went back in the cage and put on her best displays of ferocity making sure I would not try to take her prize from her.

Since Guro has limited use of her right forelimb, she does everything lefty. So, I named her after Guro Reiten, an outstanding soccer player (Chelsea and Norway) who is extremely left foot dominant.

Oh no! Please don't tell Ms. Guro I called her a boy!

I will read about the black walnuts. Bags here are all brown so must be english. (Actually, I think the are all California! hahahah)

Anyways, I know how walnuts are high prized items. Many a scuffles here over being robbed and dig-up theft.
