Default squirrel stuck in my fireplace

hiiiii new here, but there is a squirrel stuck in my fireplace, and I am the only one home and he sounds quite upset. I can't just open the door because then I'd have a distressed squirrel running around my house, I have an intense fear of heights so I can't get high enough to put a rope down the chimney. does anyone know if there's perhaps a way to maybe sedate the squirrel if I could maybe thrown something in there real quick and then get him out when he not as active? there will be more people around to help tomorrow I just feel absolutely awful for him right now since he is so clearly in distress.

    Hi Grantaire:
Is the Squirrel actually in the fireplace or the chimney? If he is actually in the fireplace, do you have a large enough box or similar container that will block any means for the trapped Squirrel to get into your house but allow you to catch the Squirrel in the container and quickly take him back outside? If the Squirrel is in the chimney, I would bet that a Chimney professional such as a Chimney Sweep would have had experience with removing animals from a chimney without harming them so that they can be returned to the wild. Sometimes, fire departments have experience with removing animals from a chimney or even a fireplace and it would be worth a call there. I'm sure that they have received similar calls in the past and even if they don't do these rescues themselves, they may be able to direct you to a person of company that does do that kind of work. Please try to get this Squirrel back into the wild! Please keep us updated on your progress!
    Regards,
    SamtheSquirrel

he is actually stuck in the fireplace, we've had issues twice in the past 14 years with birds stuck, but have been easy to catch once the door is opened because they have less mobility house-wise. I'll have to look into maybe fire department rescue. I'm really trying to get him out safely.

StS gives terrific advice. It sounds as if he might actually be in the fireplace itself and not in the chimney. If this is the case, opening the fireplace door and letting him escape after you have opened your front and back doors and put a treat in the threshold of each might very well work. Every once in awhile a wild gray or red will make its way in at our house (not through the chimney - I am notorious for leaving doors open) and this is the method we use to coax them outside. No harm no foul. Just trust that the squirrel wants nothing more than to be outside.

On the topic of chimney professionals, we installed a spark arrestor at the top when we built the house. The heavy wire mesh that arrests the sparks also keeps all creatures out of the chimney. They remain safe and free and the roof doesn't go up in flames. Your insurance company might even provide you a small premium discount if you install a spark arrestor and let them know.

Good luck. If it does go from the open fireplace door into your house, please do not try to corner it, catch it, or get between it and the open outside doors. It is a wild animal, and it is terrified. Stay safe while helping it by opening the fireplace door gently and silently, and moving away quickly, quietly, and calmly - preferably to another room with a door you can close behind you for a few minutes while it makes its way outside. With the outside doors open, he'll hear and smell his natural habitat and head for it in short order.

    Hi Grantaire:
What did you decide to do? I hope all went well! I've been concerned about this poor Squirrel who is trapped in your fireplace! He was probably experiencing extreme fear and going without water, especially while running around in the confined space looking for a way out; can result in dehydration very quickly! The usual increased activity when trapped coupled with fear can also result is what is called capture myopathy which is a form of muscle tissue breakdown! I'm hoping this incident has been resolved with good outcomes for both of you!

sorry for the late response! the squirrel has been freed thank goodness, he is back in the wild, my stepfather was able to grab him and I think that after such a time he was tired and looking for help and just accepted it. I am so so happy he has been released back into where he belongs, and I'm going to make sure we get something put in place on our chimney to make sure this doesn't happen again
