Default Hoping for a voluntary eviction

There is a large, unsafe tree in my yard that needs to be removed. At dusk yesterday I watched 4 mature-looking squirrels go into the trunk through a small hole about 8 feet off the ground, I assume to bed down for the night. The tree is scheduled to be removed in early December. I知 thinking of trying to make their tree unappealing (using some sort of repellent - critter ridder, pepper, etc) so that they値l hopefully relocate themselves now before it gets too cold, instead of waiting for the tree crew to drive them out. Am I on the right track? I feel bad that their little squirrel lives will be disrupted but the tree is definitely not safe and needs to come down and I知 assuming that a fall move will be easier on them than a winter one. Thank you for any suggestions!

How about putting up a squirrel house on a nearby tree? They'll be looking for somewhere else to go - whether because of your attempts to evict them or because the tree comes down. Given the time of year, sooner is better than later. I'm also wondering if that tree might also be where they have stashed some of the food they've gathered for the winter. You might consider providing food for them through the winter until they again have access to their own natural "kitchen..."
