Default Paralyzed squirrel- pleas help Sammy!!

Hi new here! I have a squirrel we took in when he was just a few weeks old. We fed her. Last week we came home and she was unable to move her hind legs. We took her to the vet. They did x-rays and didn’t see any pronounced fracture. It just happened so quickly. We love Sammy she’s Around four months old now. She’s healthy other than she can’t move her back legs. We have tried the prednisone, and still have a few days tapering off. But doesn’t seem to be helping any advice please help us we love Sammy, And the best life for her.

Hi! A quick reply. Depending on what she's been fed, this sounds as if it could be Metabolic Bone Disorder. Please, immediately go to this link and follow the instructions. An administrator will be with you shortly. Please, do not wait to do the emergency treatment. Do this right away, time really is of the essence.

Thank you! I ordered a few items and started with the tums! I got the emergency mud kit. I’m praying that I’m not too late. It’s been 1 week. The vet did not advise me to this . She ate the tums with a bit of peanut butter! I have cleaned up her cage of all nuts and corn. I expidited the order for blocks too! Praying it helps!! Thank you again!

    Good catch, Tomahawk!

Can you tell us what her diet is?

Don't go hard on the vet ... vets in general tend to not be as aware of some of the more esoteric problems in wilds as they are with domestics and farm animals. Squirrels eat a fairly precise diet in the wild - MBD is rare out there because of this. It is when they come to live with us that their diets stray from the wild diet and things like this happen. I pray your little guy makes it. Please let us know how it goes. In the meantime, do some reading here to keep MBD away going forward:

    Keep us in the loop?

PS - as Sammy recovers, set things up so jumping and running are minimized. If this is MBD, the bones are now brittle and extremely fragile. They will return to their natural state - over several months.
