Hi there!
A little over a week ago on Saturday, August 3rd a big tree fell in my front yard..
Come to find out, there was a squirrel nest in it. Unfortunately, the mother and one of the baby squirrels did not survive the fall but there was still one lying on the ground alive, with no injuries. Since the mother died, we knew no one was coming back for the other baby so we decided to take her in and we named her Ms. Nut.
Just in the past week she has grown so much! I will try to attach a photo of when we found her vs. today. Just yesterday she opened her eyes for the first time so she's around 5 weeks old.
We purchased the baby squirrel kit from Henry's pets and have been feeding her the Fox valley formula.
I have a few questions and any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Since we just found her last week at the beginning of August and at that time she was 4 weeks old, by the time we're supposed to release her it'll be around December. We live in Michigan and the winter's can be pretty brutal. I've read that we should "overwinter" her and release her in the spring.. What should we do during that time with her, what should we get to prepare for the winter, and what do you suggest we do to make it the transition to releasing her as easy at possible?
She's also teething.. biting on her hands and my fingers (which is painful sometimes) I've cut up the squirrel blocks from Henry's Pets in super small pieces but she won't eat it. What else do you recommend we give her?
Our last question.. Now that she's getting bigger becoming more active, what cage should we get for her? We currently have her in a short plastic bin that she crawls in to but doesn't crawl out of.. but she might try to start doing that soon. What cage do you reccomend we get for her along with any accessories, toys, water bottles, sheets for when she goes to the bathroom, etc. We definitely need to size up!
Thank you!!
