    Talking *One Blue Eye*

Hey everyone! So excited to be part of this community! So I found a baby squirrel on July 17, 2024. Baby was about a week. Super healthy and strong now but yesturday morning left eye started opening and by the evening right eye was fully open. Left eye is now completely open but blue. It's only been a day but I have to say I'm a bit worried. Is this normal? Does this happen sometimes that a certain eye might take a while to develop?

    Pictures are always helpful.

Grey squirrels open their eyes right around 5 weeks, give or take a day. They typically open together, or at least a day apart but only one eye opening and it's being blue is not normal at all.

So.. here comes lots of questions and requests.. pictures, pictures and pictures are the first 3 requests.

The questions are all about what the baby has been eating.. what specifically, how much and how often. Generally speaking, without more information, the blue eye, only one open eye suggests a nutritional deficiency although sometimes stress causes babies to open their eyes (often only one) early... which brings us back to pictures... not just the eye, but the whole squirrel.

Thank you so much for responding. I am doing the 5-7% rule for feedings and I'm using Fox Valley 20/50. Jetz seems very healthy otherwise and stool and urine look fine. 112 grams in weight. I bought a 5 foot cage and I take Jetz outside twice a day for exersize. Little bugger is already climbing and very energetic. I attached some pictures now. Hoping I'm doing it right. Lol. I also tried to attach a video but for some reason it won't attach.

I'm definetly keeping a close eye on Jetz like a mama bear. Lol. Never gets more than 2 feet away from me. It's kinda crazy with the wildlife at my house. I feed and give fresh water to the birds and the squirrels everyday. They literally come when I call them! They get so close to me that my husband jokes and calls me Snow White. Haha!

Have you tried testing the eye to see if it is blind?

Good question. I have but it seems like the reaction time on both eyes are the same. I'm definetly going to keep testing but what is strange is that this afternoon I noticed one of the squirrels, who come in my yard, had a slight bluish color on one of its eyes. Nothing vibrant like Jetz's eye though. I tried to get a picture of the squirrel but had no luck. I'm curious if they are somehow related. Wouldn't that be wild if they were and if it was some sort of a hereditary genetic mutation. I'm hoping I can get a good pic the next time I come across him. I'm so incredibly curious!
